Do people not understand how elections work?

In reference to the petition to call for another general election. You don’t get to say “oh wait, actually I’ve changed my mind. I had no clue the Labour Party would try to redistribute wealth and it would impact me so I want a re do!”

Also, so many bots / people from Indonesia filling it in. I have a certain group of people on my fb sharing it. Do they really think we’ll get to vote again? And would they all vote Conservative now?

Am I the one missing something?

People are always petitioning about something or other. I'm not sure this is really a big deal - I've certainly not heard about it anywhere other than here.

It’s on every news channel.

I don’t know anyone in real life who genuinely thinks another GE is a good idea - it’s a sort
of protest thing.

But I also don’t know anyone who had anything more enthusiastic than a resigned apathy to their own vote. Labour aren’t great, the Conservative govt were worse, nothing amazing is happening economically. I am assuming things get worse before they get better but I am just plodding along wondering when that might be, and dreading the next election.

Sunak did force inflation down so that was one good thing but probably Labour could have done the same. It’s too early to see how damaging the Budget could be but you can see Labour thinks anyone who has a small business deserves to be clobbered hard.

It’s all paralysingly dull.

What did Sunak do to force inflation down?

What kind of women hating misogynist would you have to be to object to labour strengthening the laws around spiking as well?

Spiking is already illegal because it's assault and may also be administration of a noxious substance, depending on what the spiking agent is.

It's not necessary to make an already-illegal thing illegal. In addition to the proposed bar staff training, investigating reports and prosecuting suspects would be a better use of the money it costs to draft legislation.

Does this Government understand that this is supposed to be a democracy, rather than some type of a Communist totalitarian regime?

Yes this is exactly it. There are definitely malign forces at work, stirring up trouble online. Recently, when I went on Facebook, I was bombarded with loads of different British "patriot" groups. They all had different names yet shared the same photos and same text, all about foreigners taking over and destroying the country. It seemed very obvious to me that it was the work of Russian bots or something. To see so many identical groups all in one day. Most strange. Yet people were getting riled up and angry. It was working.
I agree that getting offline is the best approach. I need to break my addiction.

Other than MN, I don't do any social media, and can confirm that the sky is not falling in.

Live free. Don't join.

Even if all of the people who have signed this petition are genuine UK residents, which they are definitely not, particularly with Elon Musk directing people to it on Twitter, it's just slacktivism, isn't it? Feeling a bit pissed off? Sign this petition. Requires fuck-all effort and fuck-all will come of it but hey, at least you've done your bit. Now have another biscuit and resume doom-scrolling.

I'm not sure it's the government that doesn't understand what a democracy is, rather it's all those that have signed this pointless petition who are the ones why don't understand democracy. If any of them are human. I suspect the vast majority are bots.

mumda · 25/11/2024 15:06

Anyone can add a petition.
https://petition.parliament.uk/

It has to go through a process where civil servants get the wording they are happy with - or say no! Then you need to get 20 signatures and then it's approved finally and let loose on the public.

The full wording is very simple and you're ignoring the second sentence.

I would like there to be another General Election.
I believe the current Labour Government have gone back on the promises they laid out in the lead up to the last election.

Did they say they'd raise employers NI? Did they say they'd remove the WFA from people who don't get PTC?
There's more stuff coming out now about the insanity they're proposing about giving those on benefits are going to get a wipe of the dirty stick.

This government clearly doesn't understand anything at all.

They apparently didn't do impact assessments on anything so far.

Topseyt123 · 25/11/2024 14:24

It's utterly ridiculous. People are quite simply thick. I mean that.

The only ones who are thick are the ones who think that the people signing it think it will spur a general election. They don’t. It’s a means of getting a message over to this hugely unpopular government.

As a left wing socialist political party with the remit to bring more equity and redistribution of wealth, is the NI increase really a surprise?

What a very strange response.

Perhaps the question “what is a woman?” is clearer for you? You use the word “woman” when the people in power have no idea what one is. (Except they do of course, but can’t be seen to acknowledge reality and sway from the narrative).

mumda · 25/11/2024 15:27

@TeenLifeMum
They said they'd grow the economy without laying out plans on how to do this.

Did they do an impact statement or speak to business about the consequences or raising NI and NMW at the same time?

They have no idea how to make the economy grow and indeed the economy will be contracting with the changes they've made.
They act as though they have just arrived in parliament rather than being an opposition party.
It is like having given children the keys to their father's car and wondering what's the worst they can do.

It is a shit show.

And I am much reminded of Martin Niemoller's poem.

potatocakesinprogress · 25/11/2024 15:31

LlynTegid · 25/11/2024 14:27

We should be objecting to the voting system we have. Which those in Belarus and Russia have too. Some form of PR would mean that we had a government supported by the majority, not a minority of those who voted.

Not really, it just means you get more extreme left and extreme right in the house of commons and dodgy backroom deals are done so that things can actually get passed.

It's not a good idea to have MPs with no experience having a lot of power because they don't know what they're doing, as Liz Truss showed (and she's not even extreme right).

noblegiraffe · 25/11/2024 15:35

What the actual fuck? Of all the ludicrous hyperbole around these budget decisions, this has to be the most offensive I've seen.

List of signatures by country. It's a way to demonstrate the anger a lot of the public have, most of whom are in the UK.

Doesn't that depend on what channels you consume your news on? I tend to get my news online from BBC news and The Guardian, neither of whom are covering this as far as I can see (or certainly weren't when I checked at lunchtime).

What about the UK postcodes being circulated on Twitter? How is it possible to discriminate between those and actual UK residents?

Probably not. The older I get the more I realise how stupid most people are. Its scary that they have a vote at all .

It's surprising how many idiots, especially on here, that really think this is for a GE

Apparently there are states in the USA where the most common google search is “How can I change my vote?” - implying that people who voted for Trump are already regretting it, even before he is inaugurated.

Don’t forget the “Did Joe Biden drop out of the election” searches on Election Day.

MaidOfSteel · 25/11/2024 15:52

WomensRightsRenegade · 25/11/2024 14:24

It’s an expression of discontent. Allowed in a free country. No-one signing it really believes it will lead to an election.

What’s fascinating is how it has triggered so many people. Usually the ‘well-off lefty liberal’ type that are ten-a-penny on here. There’s something very sneery about their response. How DARE the little people complain!

If you don’t like it, roll your eyes and move on with your life.

Absolutely spot on!

Kwiaenrker · 25/11/2024 15:54

Hilarious..was OK to call for another referendum though.

Our political system is broken

ItsAllAboutTheBass7 · 25/11/2024 15:56

At least it will make them realise how unhappy people are and publicly shames them. Most people I chat to who voted Labour regret it now unsurprisingly.🙄 It won't obviously 'do' anything as such, but in the next election I'll happily be waving them goodbye (again) 🙂
