FML undercooked chicken

My son & I had gluten free frozen chicken dippers tonight cooked in the air fryer, I've made them before for the exact same time and temperature so I'm not sure if the air fryer is maybe on the blink. Anyway they were warm but not piping hot, tasted a bit different, I ate two and gave the other two to the dog. My son ate 1 full one and half an another before saying to me that it tasted different - I pulled his apart and they were slightly pale pink 😭

I am a severe emetophobe. I've spent the last 2hrs shaking like a leaf and have had a panic attack. Neither of us have ever had food poisoning before. I don't care about diarrhea, cramps etc I only care about throwing up.

What are the chances we won't throw up? I'm crying writing this.

If there was a trigger for starting this then getting EMDR therapy could really help. Or hypnosis.

Yes there was a trigger. I've tried Hypno it didn't work but never gave EMDR a try, I will look into it thank you.

When we first got an airfryer I kept finding things like chicken nuggets were still pink inside even when cooked correctly, I started to test them with my meat thermometer and they were a lot hotter than chicken needed to be so definitely cooked but still pink inside. Not sure if this is an airfryer thing or not. I'm quite paranoid about making sure chicken is cooked thoroughly (hence the thermometer) but I've got used to the pink colour and knowing it's fully cooked.
Hope you're ok op

Really? I've never noticed it any other time. It's also the fact that it tasted different was the big alarm bell for me.

@Nogodsnomasters a little bit but I knew I wasn't going to be sick if that makes sense

I mean I wouldn't recommend it as I ended up in hospital but I wasn't sick!

fivebyfivebuffy · 24/11/2024 21:22

And yes to a meat thermometer- I got the food poisoning from a restaurant not my own cooking!

Yes that makes sense, I can cope with that. I don't do well with hospital and nor does my son as he's ASD so I really really hope it doesn't come to that.

I truly won't sleep a wink tonight and my anxiety will not allow me to eat for a long time either now. Which is disappointing as I've just started regaining some weight that I'd lost and feeling good about that.

Just eat something that feels safe
I haven't had chicken since but I'm fine with rice, pasta, cereals, yoghurts, fruit and veg etc Smile

Vax · 24/11/2024 21:53

You wont get sick from that, honestly Flowers

I know this sounds ridiculous, but can you elaborate as to why you think so? 🥺

My emetophobia will not allow me to eat if there's a risk I could get sick soon. 3yrs ago my DH had norovirus and I didn't eat for 2 n half days until my brain was sure I hadn't caught it. I know how ridiculous I sound.

TurkeyDinosaurs2 · 24/11/2024 22:03

No it's not ridiculous. I have emetophobia too. I've had some success following the Thrive programme. Have a look into that.
I'm always thinking about it though, thinking when it's going to happen next.
It's rough.
That said I think you'll be ok. I've managed to get over some of my fears around food, thankfully.

Vax · 24/11/2024 22:07

@Nogodsnomasters because DS often has those and many, many times they've been undercooked due to his impatience. He said in Japan he had chicken sushi so is very slapdash about cooking times if he's hungry.

Honestly, you'll both be grand.

polkadotchristmas · 24/11/2024 22:11

This happened to me two weeks ago and I was very calm with my son but freaked out inside. It was fine and too soo he done - funnily enough mine was in air fryer too. Please seek help for the the phobia though. Breathe. You will be fine

Thank you for replying. Is it these exact ones?

I used to eat undercooked Bernard Matthews Turkey drummers every week and they never once made me ill. I only realised I hadn't been cooking them properly once I was an adult, and discovered they shouldn't be pink and squidgy in the middle 😬

Jellybeanz456 · 24/11/2024 22:27

Frozen nuggets/dipper etc are cooked first then frozen.

HeWhoMustNotBeNamed · 24/11/2024 22:51

I'm not saying it's impossible, but you'd be VERY unlucky to get food poisoning from frozen nuggets. Freezing things massively reduces the risk of food poisoning as it would kill a good amount of the bacteria. Plus, they are so processed that there will be preserving agents in it to slow the growth of bacteria compared to a plain chicken breast.

I'm sure I watched an episode of Below Deck where the chef froze some fish before thawing and serving as sashimi, and he explained that the risk of food poisoning was negligent because he had frozen it first.

Nogodsnomasters · 25/11/2024 01:18

Thank you to everyone who has tried to reassure me, I really appreciate it. I know no one can know for sure but it does help my anxiety to have these messages. It's been 6hrs so far and no symptoms yet but I won't feel out of the woods for probably 3 days at least.

A few family members including me, ate raw chicken at bbq cooked by a tipsy relative. We was all fine. Try not to worry. Only worry if you need to.

BERB24 · 25/11/2024 02:35

Buy a meat thermometer and start cooking to temperature rather than time.
