FML undercooked chicken

My son & I had gluten free frozen chicken dippers tonight cooked in the air fryer, I've made them before for the exact same time and temperature so I'm not sure if the air fryer is maybe on the blink. Anyway they were warm but not piping hot, tasted a bit different, I ate two and gave the other two to the dog. My son ate 1 full one and half an another before saying to me that it tasted different - I pulled his apart and they were slightly pale pink 😭

I am a severe emetophobe. I've spent the last 2hrs shaking like a leaf and have had a panic attack. Neither of us have ever had food poisoning before. I don't care about diarrhea, cramps etc I only care about throwing up.

What are the chances we won't throw up? I'm crying writing this.

I've had good poisoning a few times, always from seafood and it's always started way way before 24hrs.

You're not going to get ill. Honestly.

Yeah I think seafood poisoning does kick in a lot sooner than salmonella and campylobacter from chicken. Probably not spelling that right. I just wish it wasn't true that it can take days to show up.

You keep saying to tasted different but raw chicken is actually far more obviously noticeable through texture. I have bitten into undercooked chicken breast once and it was immediately clear from the texture - felt like you'd expect when you think about slicing raw chicken, it was far more rubbery than when cooked.

@Nogodsnomasters a little bit but I knew I wasn't going to be sick if that makes sense

I mean I wouldn't recommend it as I ended up in hospital but I wasn't sick!

@fivebyfivebuffy can I ask was your poisoning from undercooked chicken and how long after eating it did you get symptoms? Thank you

And the closer I get to the 24hr mark the more petrified I get as I know 24hrs later is a common time for symptoms to start.

Last time I had food poisoning it was about 6 hours

fivebyfivebuffy · 25/11/2024 16:47

They think it was cross contamination so raw chicken on the side salad or something
Only as I remember saying to my dad after that my chicken seemed a bit overcooked as it was tough?
Looking back I should have sent it back as something wasn't quite right

I hadn't eaten any other chicken that week

Thank you, I'm at 22hrs now but as you can see from other pp's it's struck days later on them which is why I can't calm down or come off high alert or eat or sleep.

God is that what the hospital thought or the restaurant? Scary that yours wasn't even pink or raw looking.

Can I ask OP what it is about actually being sick that you are scared of?

Yes completely understand.

fivebyfivebuffy · 25/11/2024 16:55

The hospital, they said the timescale matched up and said it was likely to be cross contamination if not raw
I'm so careful cooking chicken at home and I've never had food poisoning before
But no sickness with it at all Smile

All of it, the lack of control, the risk of dehydration, the fear of needing to go to hospital (I also have a hospital phobia), the actual misery/suffering, the germs.

Thank you. I've never had food poisoning either. Did you have to go to hospital for dehydration?

Has anyone ever had symptoms kick in more than 3 days later with chicken food poisoning? I'd love to be able to feel there's a safe time frame when I can relax and start to trust that me and my son are safe from this. But when Google tells you it can be weeks it's soul destroying.

OP posts:
fivebyfivebuffy · 25/11/2024 16:59

Yes but I'm immunocompromised and the doctor said I was at risk of neutropenic sepsis so sent me to hospital. I had 7 days of antibiotics which cleared it fairly quickly

izimbra · 25/11/2024 17:00

My son is profoundly anxious about undercooked chicken.

I bought a meat probe thermometer and check everything is cooked, every time.

Tomorrow when you've stopped freaking out that you're going to be sick - go buy one.

custardpyjamas · 25/11/2024 17:01

It just depends if the chicken was contaminated and how badly it was contaminated. A lot of chicken is pretty safe these days, but what you ate was processed which increases the risk due to handling. It doesn't sound like you ate a lot of it either.

The worse the poisoning the quicker it starts, I would have thought 24 hours max for most contaminations.

I had to but I killed time in the waiting room by drinking loads of water and going to the loo a lot so by the time they saw me I was hydrated enough

fivebyfivebuffy · 25/11/2024 17:25

@custardpyjamas that's not right, campylobacter takes longer to start (not trying to upset OP but a lot of people seem to think this about food poisoning!)
I started with a 40c temp and pouring sweat so thought I had flu

I'm surprised someone with severe emetophobia doesn't triple check that foods such as chicken are properly cooked!

No one here can tell if you'll become unwell or not. Best thing you can do is just calmly prepare bowls/buckets to vomit in if needed. Have some antibac wipes about to wipe down taps etc

This. I have emetophobia after pregnancy because I had hyperemesis gravidarum and couldn’t even keep a sip of water down. Now I’m terrified and I can’t stop checking meat before I eat it. I use a meat thermometer, it has to be piping hot, if I get it from a restaurant or takeout I shine a torch on it to check the colour and if there’s even a slight tinge of pink I won’t eat it.

Nogodsnomasters · 24/11/2024 20:38

I've tried. I've had CBT and I'm on citalopram, I've had this phobia for nearly 30 years and can't get rid of it. I'm desperately trying to hide my fear from my child.

I completely understand your fears as I am the same. Also on citalopram but also take propranolol when needed. It definitely helps take the edge off of the panic although I know I'll always have the phobia. Not sure if you've tried propranolol but I would suggest giving it a go. I still worry but it keeps those panicky feelings, and physical symptoms of it, at bay just enough. Hope you are both OK 🤞

SnoopysHoose · 25/11/2024 17:37

Chicken dippers do not contain raw chicken, they're pre cooked.

PoorUncleBarry · 25/11/2024 17:43

Don't know if this helps op but every interaction I've had with undercooked meat has led to thundering poo, not vomiting. Also, my own dear mother was no stranger to undercooked processed meat and I was never sick 😁 you'll be alright.
