Whatever your political leaning, it's a sad day for politics. Sad to hear Gordon Brown just now on radio 4 describe him as a Colossus then to hear that he died in a care home with Alzheimer's. Hard to imagine.
Still remembered who people were to the end and kept his warmth and friendliness.

One of his quotes

I love that. I bet he would have been an interesting person to meet.

I actually admired him for the punch: it was expertly executed, and in response to someone meting out a violent acts towards him; he was not the aggressor. Defending yourself does not indicate a "penchant for violence".

Same. That guy definitely deserved that punch.

PandoraSox · 21/11/2024 09:15

Was he? No wonder he dealt with that egg thrower so efficiently.

That makes it even worse. If he was a trained boxer he should have known better. Can't believe that people think it's OK for a politician to punch someone.

Ahh yes, the standard "if you don't agree with me, you must be right wing" narrative that continuously damages the left.

You know people can read posts other than those in this thread? Have argued with posters before?

ABirdsEyeView · 21/11/2024 10:39

?

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 21/11/2024 10:40

He had his faults but I do think the comment he made about his wife taking a car 100yards was funny. He said that she had just had her hair done!!

Yes was that a party conference at Blackpool? I think the wind was said to be very fierce

The poster who was called right wing is right wing. It's not a comment because she disagrees (on what? This isn't an argument thread). It's because of other things she's said elsewhere. And why do you seem to see it as a criticism? It's an observation.

MonkeyToHeaven · 21/11/2024 10:44

RIP. Head and shoulders above any of our current cabinet in terms of aspirations for working people and of loyalty to the aims of the Labour Movement.

Gave a small tap to a pro fox hunting farm worker, which was the high point of the bloke's life.

Did I say I thought it was OK? I said the punch was efficient, which it was.

It is really not a good look to come on to a RIP thread and try to start a bunfight.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 21/11/2024 10:44

I don't know @ContactNightmare . Great comment though, and pretty unarguable.

HelpMeGetThrough · 21/11/2024 10:46

I can remember a TV programme where he was asked about the time he smacked the bloke that egged him.

His response was "Tony Blair told me to go out and connect with the electorate, so I did."

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 21/11/2024 10:48

Isn't it interesting that some of the old style Tories have had the manners to be magnanimous about him, but the new right are on this thread behaving like shits. Sums it up, really.

What’s a bunfight in your context?

No-one's trying to start a bun fight but on a forum you are going to get a difference of opinion.

Yes it is sad that he died from Alzheimers, wouldn't wish that on anyone, but let's not start condoning politicians punching members of the public saying that the man deserved it as someone on here has said.

MonkeyToHeaven · 21/11/2024 10:54

Tories prefer their Ministers to arrange for the beating up of people over the phone. Heaven forbid they'd get their own hands dirty.

PandoraSox · 21/11/2024 10:58

Don't rise to it, folks

I love that quote about connecting with the public. Brown's tribute on Today was really moving.

HelpMeGetThrough · 21/11/2024 10:59

but let's not start condoning politicians punching members of the public saying that the man deserved it as someone on here has said.

The bloke did deserve it, I'd have smacked him as well.

EverythingAllatOnceAllTheTime · 21/11/2024 11:02

A two-year affair with his Secretary was hardly a ‘wobble’.

Today, he would have been cancelled, for sure.

He did deserve it. I'm saying it too. In fact, the general consensus at the time as well as the law came to the same conclusion.

Doubt it.

Boris Johnson was never cancelled and he did far more wobbling than one two year affair

What’s a bunfight in your context?

Do you wish that he would rest in peace?
Or do you wish to bring up every negative thing you can think of?

If it's the latter, start your own thread.

PandoraSox · 21/11/2024 11:09

The infamous punch. I wonder if anyone will track down Mr Mullet Hair for an interview?
