John Prescott RIP

Whatever your political leaning, it's a sad day for politics. Sad to hear Gordon Brown just now on radio 4 describe him as a Colossus then to hear that he died in a care home with Alzheimer's. Hard to imagine.
Still remembered who people were to the end and kept his warmth and friendliness.

And shown your true colours.

Agreed, I have. If someone does something to me, they'll get it back.

He did deserve it. I'm saying it too. In fact, the general consensus at the time as well as the law came to the same conclusion.

What about the woman who threw a milkshake over Nigel Farage. Are you saying that if he had responded in the same way as John Prescott that she would have deserved to be punched?

LlynTegid · 21/11/2024 11:11

Mrs Prescott had a child before they met, who was given up for adoption. Years later said child (a son) traced his birth mother, and both Mrs Prescott and John reportedly welcomed him into the family.

That woman was convicted of assault wasn’t she? Factually they are quite different circumstances. The egg man could have made a complaint. I don’t think he did

That wasn't you in the news recently was it for fighting with another woman at the school gates!

The infamous punch. I wonder if anyone will track down Mr Mullet Hair for an interview?

Edited

Sad that you choose to remember him for this, and not his alleged achievements.

ContactNightmare · 21/11/2024 11:18

The Kyoto Protocol is an achievement- don’t be so chippy. Blair owes his career to Prescott (as does Mandelson btw).

No. I said the countryside alliance goon who hit Prescott in the face deserved to be punched. That was both the legal and popular conclusion.

Yes, and he held on to the grace and favour Dorneywood - where he was clocked playing croquet LOL.

Like some of the current Labour cabinet - he was quick to drop his working class roots, clearly.

Apparently Prescott recently mended fences with Mandelson.

Notonthestairs · 21/11/2024 11:22

Its not alleged achievements as Al Gore makes clear -
“He fought like hell to negotiate the Kyoto Protocol and was an unwavering champion of climate action for decades to come. I’m forever grateful to John for that commitment to solving the climate crisis and will miss him as a dear friend.”

The same commitment to climate change meant he swam the Thames to protest about dumping waste in our waters.

Save me from the working class people shouldnt play croquet nonsense.

John Prescott was a member of the Council of Europe’s parliamentary assembly for many years, before and after serving as Deputy Prime Minister in the UK. Here he is talking about his international work on

I liked him. He was one of the good guys in a world of self-serving politicians. RIP

This isn't true at all.

His wife had had a child before they got together who was adopted. It was nothing to do with him. In fact Wiki says this:
Pauline had a son by an American airman in the 1950s, whom she gave up for adoption.[4] In an episode of Desert Island Discs broadcast in February 2012, Prescott said he acknowledged Pauline's first son as part of his family, a third son.

Apparently Prescott recently mended fences with Mandelson.

‘The crustacean was christened Peter by the Deputy Prime Minister, John Prescott, on Monday in an apparent swipe at Peter Mandelson, the Minister without Portfolio.’

The crab was the only one to retain its dignity, frankly.

I think it was. His and Mrs Prescotts, before they married. But thats' all I'm going to say about this now as I don't want to derail the thread with paternity issues.

You think wrong then don’t you and quite the slur

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 21/11/2024 11:29

Blair called him "One of the most committed and loyal, and definitely the most unusual," politicians. Also, “He was one of the most talented people I ever encountered in politics,”

There's no doubt that he was committed to the British working class, and a first class mediator and negotiator, including negotiating the Kyoto agreement on climate change.

ABirdsEyeView · 21/11/2024 11:34

"Pretty grim that those on the 'right have to be so nasty and offensive"

@cardibach this is why being called right wing is taken as an insult rather than an observation. Because it's used as one. It's not even accurate - I voted for Blair! I did not vote Conservative (or Reform) at the last election. It was me being called nasty and offensive, since I think it's reasonable to be truthful about a deceased politician and don't feel the need to only mention the good stuff and gloss over the bad. It's also considered bad form to track posters and their opinions across threads as disagreement should be dealt with on the relevant thread.

I have said on other threads that we have bought into a narrative that the left are somehow better, more moral people, and that's blatantly untrue. I don't think 'good' or 'moral' is divided along party lines.

I don't blame JP for punching that man though - I think it was an instinctive reaction to being attacked and if you're big enough to throw eggs at someone, you're big enough to take the consequence of getting a smack for it.

Pretty sure he wasn't an American airman!

So many tributes and he is being celebrated for many things I had forgotten about. Right to roam for a start.
