Oh dear. Another shit Christmas ad.

bring back Edgar and Buster!

OP posts:
Monkeybutt1 · 14/11/2024 10:59

I liked it, and the Boots one. Aldi is still my favourite so far

Lakeyloo · 14/11/2024 11:06

piscofrisco · 14/11/2024 10:54

Lots of love @Lakeyloo and Im sorry for the loss of your lovely sister.

I've just rewatched it and am bawling again! In my case because the sisters are so like my own daughters who are just on the cusp of leaving home really, and I was probably feeling a bit nostalgic about them being little anyway.

Thank you @piscofrisco
Christmas is a bittersweet time in our house.... We'll just get the scrabble out and turn the TV off i think ! 🙂

Rogerstreasures · 14/11/2024 11:07

Well it made me cry, it reminded me so much of me and my twin sister. Sharing a bedroom and each other’s clothes. We’re seventy now and still very close.

MorettiForMargo · 14/11/2024 11:07

It was a bit too busy and chaotic for my liking - like watching a load of TikTok shorts! They could have told the story in a less frantic way and it would have been more heartwarming, I like the premise.

I think a lot of us are quite nostalgic for 90s Christmases. They were something else. I wish someone had done a really good 90s ad.

Givingmetalktalk · 14/11/2024 11:43

Probably lands better if your sister isn't a massive bitch. 😂

placemats · 14/11/2024 12:34

I love it. Have sat crying as we lost our mum this year. My sister and I always meet up for a Christmas lunch, obviously we meet up at other times in the year. She's always late because she leaves the wrapping to the last minute! Her presents are always much better than mine - though she says the same about me.

PlumpHobbit · 14/11/2024 15:22

Unfortunately very meh, although like the song

I just don't really GET what's going on bar her choosing a gift, which we don't even see what it is, although looking on their website they are looking for someone to record "sonnet" for an "exclusive airing of the ad on Christmas day" so I presume they will reveal it then

I'm guessing it's the jumper we've seen in the clips leading up to this but it doesn't look like it will fit in the box?!

Didn't make me cry, which is a standard I usually set for Christmas adverts (I properly BAWLED at Bear and Hare, same for the snowman). I loved Edgar the dragon. Can see it making my mum cry as her sister passed away recently

The best Christmas advert of recent times for me has been Mog for the Sainsbury's advert, absolutely loved it.

Current ones I've seen the one with the oven gloves singing tickles me but they're all a bit wishy washy

PlumpHobbit · 14/11/2024 15:32

Interestingly just shown someone at work who liked it but has a younger sister, I think maybe that's part of why I'm a bit Meh as I'm an only child

The comments about the mum on here (which ive only realised because of here i wouldn't from the advert, and if the gift is something to do with the jumper, which in all those previews were from the mum) - now if that all happens yes I probably will sob!!

GrumpyCactus · 14/11/2024 16:10

Possibly but as someone with a twin sister whom I love a lot I still found it very meh so not sure it makes much difference.

PlumpHobbit · 14/11/2024 16:17

Oh bloody hell just made the mistake of looking up the "not the real John Lewis Christmas advert" in the office, now THAT is a tear jerker and the song is beautiful

Debtwarrant · 14/11/2024 16:21

I was just getting hints at the beginning of Taylor swift willow/cardigan/folklore then it all got quite chaotic and confusing.

JL should have done something along the lines of a grumpy old Scrooge not liking dogs in shops but actually he’s just unhappy as he’s a widower and misses his childhood pet but then he could somehow find the joy of Christmas again in a JL store etc etc accompanied by a festive breathy version of ‘who let the dogs out’ perhaps maybe …..🤔 😂😂😂

the80sweregreat · 14/11/2024 16:29

I don't buy many presents anymore, especially not in JL, so it didn't resonate with me at all. I Haven't got a sister either.
I liked the music and at least it's the original.
Prefer the Waitrose ad with ' who ate the dessert ?' That's not bad.
Debt warrant
' Who let the dogs out' slowed down and breathy and sung by a willowy blond singer. Maybe next year

Yes and I feel that they could overlay some parts of it with a bit of carol of the bells not that I’ve thought about this much 😂

have to edit to add now I’m thinking the dogs that cheer him up in store can be the 12 dogs of Xmas . Loads of potential for cute doggy related merchandise then 😂 I’m starting to think this is my outlet for what’s been a stressful day 😂😂😂

the80sweregreat · 14/11/2024 16:41

The dogs could come out in colour coordinated collars.
' whoooo let the dogs out . ?
Woof , woofffff , woofffff
Who let .. etc

'At John Lewis the Christmas dogs were jumping
Hi hi yippeeee yi yoooooo hhh '
Etc

OnTheBounce · 14/11/2024 16:47

The Twelve Danes of Christmas?

'Five Goooooolden Retrievers...'

Debtwarrant · 14/11/2024 16:53

Yes !!! Really think we should go into advertising

Mlanket · 14/11/2024 16:56

I thought it was obvious the mum was dead & I liked the concept of reliving childhood memories with your siblings.

But I am a bit over the cute animal thing.

maydaymayday1 · 14/11/2024 16:58

Well it's worked. Lots of people talking about it

mrselton · 14/11/2024 17:00

Floofydawg · 14/11/2024 07:21

God you're all miserable.

I totally agree OP.

I genuinely do not mean to be miserable and would hate to think I came across as such. I suppose I just look forward to the JL advert and I found it really disappointing this year. I loved the ‘Bear and Hare’ and several others but I found this year’s a bit too busy and confusing.

Mlanket · 14/11/2024 17:00

And I liked the fact it was actually about shopping!

Mlanket · 14/11/2024 17:06

@Tomatocutwithazigzagedge I’ve never seen that, it’s heartwarming & funny. I love it!

TonTonMacoute · 14/11/2024 17:08

The ads seemed to be better when they didn't try so hard.

Mlanket · 14/11/2024 17:09

Isn’t it chaotic because the store is closing & shes rushing around trying to find something?

the80sweregreat · 14/11/2024 17:24

Twelve Danes a leaping
Eleven corgis dancing
Ten boxers boxing
Nine Beagle beagling
Eight Dalmatians spotting
Seven Bichon Frisée
Six huskies busking
Five .. golden retrievers ..
Four greyhound running
Three Rottweilers barking
Two terriers howling
And a pit Bull in a pear treeeee

Newgirls · 14/11/2024 17:29

It’s a grower I think. I like that it’s about buying a gift for a woman. Love the through the wardrobe bit. Maybe a bit too much going on but made more sense second time I watched it
