I think the big Christmas advert trend just isn't what it was 10 years ago.

The advert is fine, and is thought provoking. Nice to see a sister relationship being explored instead of happy family.
I don't think many adverts are as memorable as the ones in the 2010's and that's fine.

Just try and enjoy it for what it is 🎅🏼🎄❤️

Also, the penguin advert with the Tom Odell song was by FAR the best John Lewis advert 😊

Yes, I agree.
I think Sainsburys won with its WW1 advert.

Kendodd · 14/11/2024 09:22

I think Waitrose (?) did one, one year saying - we didn't spend loads of money on a fancy Christmas advert this year. We donated the money to Crisis instead.

YorkieTheRabbit · 14/11/2024 09:24

I really like it. Yes it’s zooming around but that’s the point, a last minute shopping trip. I enjoyed how it went back through the teenage years and childhood then back to the present day.

Mittens67 · 14/11/2024 09:29

JL has gone down the pan in many ways. All their fetish bollocks in the in house magazine, allowing men into women’s changing rooms, crap adverts.
Maybe they will remember their core customers again (ie middle aged women not men in frocks) now that Sharon White is going.

ssd · 14/11/2024 09:32

Its a bit confusing

But the worst one is the M&S Dawn French one..

DavidBowiesEyeMakeUpArtist · 14/11/2024 09:34

I liked it too!
LOVE LOVE LOVE the sister relationship shown - albeit I have two sisters so I'm defo biased there.
Also, thought it was obvious that their mother had died - the tear in eye as she said she can't join in with the kitchen dancing.....
I love Sonnet as a song so good choice and original band signing it too I think wasn't it? (only watched it once so didn't really clock, but pretty sure it was original The Verve....??)
I'm a teeny bit older than the two women probably (but not much ;)) so similar stage of life, have sisters, love 90s Verve and love a bit of Christmas and life nostalgia.
Just made sense to me - LOVE!

Weirdly, that's what I liked! I felt it was trying to talk to women like me - almost like they were trying to welcome me back in after all their gender bollocks! Was pretty standard - standard women, standard story, not in any way geared towards a minority?? Slightly older women used as well - albeit fairly wealthy looking and thin of course :)

I bet she bought her a .... candle.

I'm glad you've all explained it to me.

Much preferred the "Not the real John Lewis" ad featuring the Robin.

Tescos is best so far this year

Agree about the 'not the real John Lewis ad.' It's a beautiful tear jerker. This one too frenetic to be engaging for me. Lovely vocals though.

Noodlesnotstrudels · 14/11/2024 09:56

I quite liked it. But i had my second daughter this year and seeing my two girls developing their sisterly relationship is probably making me feel much more emotional about such things than i would have been beforehand (I have one DB).

Sluj · 14/11/2024 09:58

I've just watched the Sainsbury's WW1 advert on You Tube. I cant believe it's 10 years old. Still the best one ever for me - with Monty the Penguin in 2nd place.

GetrudeCoppard · 14/11/2024 09:59

I couldn’t understand what the heck was going on.

piscofrisco · 14/11/2024 10:04

I loved it. I've got two late teenage DD's and it's them to a tee. And I love the song choice. Thankful it was the original not some breathy girl doing a cover.

AddieLoggins2 · 14/11/2024 10:07

I liked it.

It was nice not to have some daft character in it again this year - I think they are too try hard, wanting to be cute/funny and just falling a bit flat to me (I did like the Geordie parody version of the penguin one though).

I got that the mother was dead; it was the look on the actress's face and the way she wanted to stay but couldn't. That was the only moment she seemed to really want to stay in and not rush through.

piscofrisco · 14/11/2024 10:11

I don't really get what's hard to understand about it. It's a woman on a Frenetic last minute shopping trip reminiscing about moments with her sister to help her choose her present. It's trying to say that John Lewis is the place to go (and physically go, not order online) to hunt for presents for your family?

Tomatocutwithazigzagedge · 14/11/2024 10:12

I liked it, but it didn't get me right in the heart like some of them do.

The one that completely floors me everytime is the Polish one from Allegro...nearly 10 years and I still blub when I watch it...

OnTheBounce · 14/11/2024 10:15

I had a tear in my eye (as someone with a little sister, and no mum anymore) but I think they could have wrung more pathos and nostalgia out of it by making the women 50+, and zipping through more life stages, more quickly - 70s Xmas, 80s Xmas, Millennium Xmas, etc, with all the good/bad presents in between.

GoldenPheasant · 14/11/2024 10:31

I'm quite impressed that it's actually an ad about shopping in JL, not some mysterious stuff about lonely people on the moon or sad Christmas trees or whatever.

That's my favourite Christmas advert, i'm so glad i'm not the only one who cries when I watch it.

Lakeyloo · 14/11/2024 10:46

I've just watched it and am now sat at my desk booing my eyes out 😢
I'm not a particularly sentimental or emotional person and not wanting to bring the mood down or look for sympathy, but that could have been me and my little Sis (definitely the pinching each other clothes) She passed unexpectedly 16 years ago aged 30 and i still cant look at the "for my Sister" birthday cards in a shop 😞
Love the sentiment of the ad, and love the track but i really don't want to see it on Christmas day when we're sitting watching telly with my Mum.
Quite surprised how much it got to me tbh.

rolloverbeethoven · 14/11/2024 07:46

Haven't seen it yet, is it as objectionable as the Boots one?

No - the Boots one is absolutely awful.

Oh my gosh, I've never seen that before but it has just had me in tears. How utterly lovely.

piscofrisco · 14/11/2024 10:54

Lots of love @Lakeyloo and Im sorry for the loss of your lovely sister.

I've just rewatched it and am bawling again! In my case because the sisters are so like my own daughters who are just on the cusp of leaving home really, and I was probably feeling a bit nostalgic about them being little anyway.

Squarehoot · 14/11/2024 10:56

I love it and can relate to it perfectly. My mum passed away a year ago today and my sister has held me together this past year. The closeness of the sisters was what I took from it.
