Are there still any around?

There's one in Barnstaple north Devon. Generally looks quite busy when I pass it. Probably full of tourists on a nostalgia trip 🤣🤣

Our local one shut down a few years ago. Loved their Knickerbocker Glories and their chips.

As a veggie I also loved their bean burgers until I saw that their menu had small print to say they were cooked in the same oils as the meat burgers and marked as 'vegetarian' so that was the end of it. The chefs said it was due to lack of grills. The best thing was being able to eat off plates rather than cardboard; kind of a glorified greasy spoon!

This thread has filled me with the most intense nostalgia for a Wimpy burger I had in the Wimpy on the Strand in London, towards the Fleet Street end. It was bloody marvellous. I can still taste it. This would have been in the late 80s.

No doubt the branch no longer exists.

rightoguvnor · 11/11/2024 21:02

Ours is coming back, due to reopen before Xmas, it's being refurbished.
I haven't been able to find a photo online but the other day someone had put a sign on the shopfront "bring back our Wimpy - this is an emergency situation" 😂

Growlybear83 · 11/11/2024 21:05

Yes, I know of three near me in south London.

There's one on the seafront in Southsea

Is it staying with all the seafront work?

I remember the union street one well. Our mum would take me and my sister there (80s kids) for a lunch before the matinee at Odeon. I loved the bacon in a toasted sesame bap, toasted teacakes, and massive milkshakes and knickerbocker glory sundaes not to mention the Brown Derby! I wish they would bring Wimpy back. I don't know why they closed so many of them.

Oh yes, I'd forgotten about the toasted tea cakes and knickerbocker glories. Matinee at the Odeon - that brings back memories! I guess Wimpy's couldn't compete with McD's and Burger King. I suppose kids thought those were more "cool" because of the clever advertising. Wimpy's was much better and at least it wasn't American.

Allnewtometoo · 12/11/2024 13:25

The one in Kings Lynn is always busy.

IvanaTinkles · 12/11/2024 13:45

I have 2 near me - can get it delivered via Deliveroo, so sometimes have one for the Saturday night takeaway if I’m feeling a bit nostalgic for the 80’s!

pavillion1 · 12/11/2024 15:32

im sure they vanished and have now come back again

SpiggingBelgium · 12/11/2024 15:58

They never completely closed down, but I think they did start a new branch campaign a few years ago.

Norugratsatall · 12/11/2024 16:11

There was one in my (very small) market town growing up in the 70s. Now long gone. We used to bunk off school and go and sit in it and order hot chocolate. Happy days! 😊

Bunnykins34 · 12/11/2024 16:14

Mmmmm love a Wimpy 😋😋😋
We have a branch in Lakeside Shopping Centre, on the High Street in Eastbourne Town Centre and another one I have eaten in is on Eltham High Street 🙂🙂

Teasall · 12/11/2024 16:29

Up until relatively recently there was one in Marlow (Bucks) which always made me laugh as it was right next door to The Ivy Garden, talk about different demographics! 🙂

AutumnLeaves1990 · 12/11/2024 17:04

We used to have a couple nearby. Teddington and Twickenham. Both closed now 😞

MysteriousUsername · 12/11/2024 18:33

I was really craving a wimpy today, so thought I'd pop into town for one, but it's closed on Tuesdays! Gutted.
