Shrewsbury! They do a lovely big Knickerbocker Glory there. £5.99 but worth every penny!

MrsMoastyToasty · 11/11/2024 17:58

@ginasevern didn't there used to be one on Union Street and another next to the Hippodrome in Bristol or am I thinking of other fast food outlets.
Did they also serve the meals on proper plates?

Yes! There were three Wimpy's in Bristol. One on Park St, one on Union St and one right next door to the Hippodrome. All the meals were served on china plates with proper cutlery and the food was cooked on the griddle to order. They had waitresses too. As I said, the one on Park St was a cut above the others. Park St was considered a bit posh in those days! This was a long time ago, I'm going back to the 70's, but I think the one on Union St was the last to close down.

Dellaandthedealer · 11/11/2024 18:13

Had lunch in the one in Lowestoft last week, it was blooming lovely!
It was busy too.

unsync · 11/11/2024 18:28

Chicken in a Bun and a coke was my Saturday morning after Friday night post work drinks with my bestie hangover cure.

Vax · 11/11/2024 18:45

My mum met my dad when she was a student working in the wimpey

He ordered a Big Bender and the rest is history.

There is one in Birkenhead, Merseyside. We've been once or twice. I wish there were more, I love Wimpy.

Is it still there?? Used to love that one

HRTQueen · 11/11/2024 17:30

There is one in Streatham

I love the spicy beanburger (best beanburger ever) and the 1/4 pounder

May treat myself this weekend 😁

I love the Streatham one! Same guy has been managing it for well over 30 years 😁

CeeJay81 · 11/11/2024 18:56

There's one in shrewsbury. Been once but it's overpriced for what it is and I wasnt impressed tbh. I'm sure I don't remember it being like that, but I was a young kid way back when I remember the whimpy kid, so my memories are vague.

ErrolTheDragon · 11/11/2024 19:01

Itoldyousoo · 11/11/2024 17:57

Nothing like a Bender 😂

Do they still actually call them that though?

Happy memories...my church youth group in the late 70s used to play badminton etc on a Friday evening then go to the Wimpy afterwards.

Eminybob · 11/11/2024 19:06

There isn't one anywhere near me. Last time I saw one was some tiny town we passed through en route to a holiday destination.

There were 2 in the town I grew up in. So many memories of going with friends on a Saturday after a morning of mooching around town.

My order was a quarter pounder (I can still taste the special sauce) followed by a brown derby.

Just looked at the menu on line, the brown derby now has Oreo crumbs on top. Definitely didn't get that in my day. I think (but could be wrong) it had chopped nuts on top?

Eminybob · 11/11/2024 19:10

Looks like the bender has been renamed the bendy.

I remember the union street one well. Our mum would take me and my sister there (80s kids) for a lunch before the matinee at Odeon. I loved the bacon in a toasted sesame bap, toasted teacakes, and massive milkshakes and knickerbocker glory sundaes not to mention the Brown Derby! I wish they would bring Wimpy back. I don't know why they closed so many of them.

I'm pretty sure it is still there.

TheFutureIs · 11/11/2024 19:24

There's one on the seafront in Southsea

queenofthewild · 11/11/2024 19:25

There's one in a shopping centre basement in Aldershot.

I genuinely thought I'd stumbled through a timeslip when I found it.

MysteriousUsername · 11/11/2024 19:39

The one in the town I grew up in has been run by the same family since I was a child. My mum used to take me and my brother there regularly to use the luncheon vouchers she got from work. I went there a few years ago after having not been for about 25 years and the bloke running it recognised me and greeted me like an old friend! Amazing!

OpYourMinge · 11/11/2024 19:47

I recall one in a bowling alley in Hanley, Stoke on Trent (on the Etruria business estate) but it was a very limited menu. Nice quality but nothing like the big menu of my childhood. I also recall one in a service station somewhere (was it Taunton Deane?). This was 2000s era.

In about 2010 I recall one in Kent, (Canterbury, I think). I was overjoyed and had a brown derby in celebration.

hoarahloux · 11/11/2024 19:58

The Wimpy sauce is the best burger sauce. They used to sell it on deliveroo but no longer. I think you can get it if you go into a store though.

Chowtime · 11/11/2024 20:04

A lot of the old wimpy bars were brought up by MacDonalds in the 80's.

Wimpy really missed a trick there - they could have adapted, modernised and stayed in business.

PickledMuffin · 11/11/2024 20:07

there's one in Eastbourne. Can't beat a bender in a bun!

FelixtheAardvark · 11/11/2024 20:09

Farnborough, Hants. had one last time I was there.

Laura36TTC · 11/11/2024 20:15

There was one in Dartford when I was there a few years back

BatshitCrazyWoman · 11/11/2024 15:51

I think there's still one in Beckenham, and in Orpington.

Our kids get taken to the Orpington one for a treat. They love it there and always choose I'd over McDonalds. Proper old fashioned service.

56Chandeliers · 11/11/2024 20:28

The last one I went to was at a motorway services about ten years ago and remember being shocked at how expensive it was. Way more than McDs, BK, etc. on the motorway or otherwise. I can only imagine what it might cost now with inflation.

I thought they’d gone services-only and then out of business entirely, so good to hear they’re still around.

TeamPolin · 11/11/2024 20:31

Still one in Colchester. Used to love a Wimpy as a kid!
