If you were invited to a Goth themed wedding

What would you wear?! I think it's going to be a fun wedding, (distant relative) but I'm a middle aged woman! I might be able to rock a Morticia look perhaps but we have dh, DS2 (adult) to dress as well. Any ideas welcomed!!!

I would ask if there is anything that you shouldn't wear. If the bride was wearing a black lace bridal gown, then she may not want everyone else in a black dress.

StillAtTheRestaurant · 06/11/2024 18:25

I'd be declining the invitation if the theme extended to my clothes.

ladymalfoy45 · 06/11/2024 18:26

I'd be bloody excited! Black,purple,red.. Velvet satin lace. Gloves.

This. Sounds ace fun!

coxesorangepippin · 06/11/2024 18:33

Black?

Waterboatlass · 06/11/2024 18:37

I'd want more details.. you don't want to go fancy dress if they mean formal wear but black/ dark if possible. I think any black evening wear could be adapted. Maybe something lacy over the top for texture

GiddyRobin · 06/11/2024 18:39

Goth here! Though toned down most of the time. 😂

Long black dress, think those summer style ones with the empire bust and puffy sleeves. Get a corset (you can get soft ones), to go over the top around your middle - basque style, doesn't matter if boobs are over the top. You can get them cheap on Vinted. Chunky boots! Lace is always nice if you can find it, and look for silver jewellery.

If you want elegance, think Victorian and then play with it a bit. This is my usual daily wear when I'm not meeting clients! I don't always wear black either, and you also don't need to - goth can be in plenty of shades. Plums, reds, greens. My wedding dress was dark blue!

BigDahliaFan · 06/11/2024 18:39

I'd be wearing dark purple but no concessions beyond that.

MrsPostmanPat · 06/11/2024 18:40

I'd message the bride and ask for examples of what you can/can't wear. Then go all out to dress the part!

GiddyRobin · 06/11/2024 18:41

Oh and get the men in a nice loose white shirt with balloon sleeves and a pair of pants. Or frock coats. 😍 Etsy, Vinted, and Ebay are your friends. Don't go for "costume" clothes if you want it to look nice.

OnlyWhenILaugh · 06/11/2024 18:41

What does the invitation actually say?
Is there a dress code or request made?

Scrimt · 06/11/2024 18:41

Oh I'd love it. You could be so extra! No wedding guest frocks from Coast nonsense 😂

I'd probably channel some Susie Cave.

quantumbutterfly · 06/11/2024 18:42

Steampunk has a bit of an overlap with goth I think, or Google Whitby vampires for inspiration. Find a good waistcoat & black trews.

Sounds like cosplay fun.

Ovendrone · 06/11/2024 18:42

Oh dear God. I just couldn't do it. My uual "fancy dress" is a tshirt lovely based on the theme 😆 I'd go along and have fun, but no.

I love dark purple though, so if I could find a good dress then maybe that.

IDoLikeToBeByTheSea · 06/11/2024 18:43

Pastel goth could be an option if other styles aren’t for you 🙂

Wholelotagrey · 06/11/2024 18:43

I am having a gothic style wedding next year, black dress black suits black table cloths etc… that said this is my style and I’ve made it clear my guests can wear what they want as it’s in the summer so if they want to wear a pink summery dress that’s fine!

Personally I’d ask the bride and groom if there is a dress code for the guests as you might find there isn’t!

Pedallleur · 06/11/2024 18:44

Google Whitby Goths. Big festival there and some fantastic outfits. You might get some ideas but prob no need to go otp

Aroastdinnerisnotahumanright · 06/11/2024 18:45

I would actually be thrilled 😂Is there someone you can ask for a little guidance ?

I found this website with lots of choice and many are reasonably priced. Good thing is you can rewear for Halloween next year!

I'm having images of the OP turning up with her boobs hanging out of her corset after she's tried very hard to adhere to the goth theme only to find out that it's only the bride and groom in goth attire.
OP I think you better ask if there's any dress code expectations.

StarSlinger · 06/11/2024 18:45

I'd just wear a purple dress with some lace gloves or something. I wouldn't go full on goth.

Nikitaspearlearring · 06/11/2024 18:47

I was in a charity shop today and there was loads of velvet in lovely colours like dark red so I'd go for that. Also there was black with silver beading. But this is assuming it's a winter wedding - if it's summer I'm not sure!

StormingNorman · 06/11/2024 18:47

Amazing!

I’d check with the bride so I didn’t encroach on her colour and then I’d go full pelt for jewel toned satins and velvets. Deep red or plum lipstick. Maybe a hat. Black or colour co-ordinated boots.

You can be so glamorous and dramatic and have so much fun with this!

JC03745 · 06/11/2024 18:48

I would assume it meant 'wear black' but as someone else said, I'd be worried if you went Morticia style, whether that would look more like a dress up outfit?

What did the invite actually say? Can you ask the bride or a close family member if they mean 'formal' or 'dress up' goth?

CMOTDibbler · 06/11/2024 19:01

Years ago we went to a goth wedding and it was amazing. The invitations specified evening wear encouraged (all their friends were on the goth/metal/rock scene) and there was a lot of black/ purple and leather. But also a lot of people just in regular dark clothes or anything else they liked. The only thing the bride asked for was no goth wedding dresses (its a thing)
