Friend has a large family, not stuck for money and never buys any of the above and never has. Their children are between 26 and 17. Got me wondering if it's quite the norm?

No never.
occasionally get given them by guests.

Notreat · 03/11/2024 13:11

Yes I always buy nuts, quality street, Roses, mints , dates, and tangerines. It reminds me of my childhood and to me says Christmas

Etincelle · 03/11/2024 13:43

I used to think QS had gone downhill, but I actually enjoyed them last christmas. Maybe my taste buds have become less sophisticated!

PassingStranger · 03/11/2024 13:47

Nuts all year round.

herecomesautumn · 03/11/2024 14:30

I always get stuffed dates, nuts and other similar nibbly things which aren't touched until the tree and decs are up

GiddyRobin · 03/11/2024 14:31

We always buy chocolates and then there's loads left over! It's a hangover from living with my Dad as a kid, I think. He had a huge sweet tooth so they'd always be eaten, but me, DH, and the kids don't! But I don't feel "ready" until there's a tin of Roses/Quality Street in the kitchen!

We do buy and eat nuts and tangerines though.

Tbh, we all like cheese so tend towards that instead. One box of chocolates, some nuts and fruit, but loads of cheese. And we bake a Christmas cake so the cheese goes with that too!

ginasevern · 03/11/2024 15:02

I don't buy sweets but I buy a nice box of chocolates or two. I always get nuts in their shells and satsumas (if I can find them and not easy bloody pealers).

mitogoshigg · 03/11/2024 15:07

Nuts and chocolate yes, but we buy nuts year round anyway and I buy good chocolate not those tubs, and yes I buy that year round. I don't buy things especially for Christmas except gluwein

Mumofyellows · 03/11/2024 15:22

We only have the tubs of chocolates if we get them as gifts, but do always have a large pack of amazing French Revillon Papillote chocolates sent to me as a gift from my French family and they are AMAZING and are a real Christmas treat 😍
Growing up we had nuts but I don't buy them now, none of us are huge nut fans!

Fellow scoffer of enrobed fruits here. Try Forest Feast range, absolutely scrumptious and usually on offer somewhere.

Oh I've tried some of those. Think I probably referred to them as chocolate covered cherries, like some barefoot peasant 😂

Turns out most people have consumed them at some point unaware - much like if you ate a chocolate covered raisins. Not sure why we would put people down for having a broader vocabulary.

this thread indicates to me that enrobed fruit scoffers tend to be pretty sensitive

Definitely, off to binge on some enrobed fruits.

Sneering at someone because they know the correct name for a category of confectionery (that probably has its own set of trading regulations) seems like the nastiest sort of schoolyard bullying.

So far, I've stocked up on chocolate-covered orange slices and lemon ditto, still have a pack of last years' chocolate-covered dates and have not yet seen either the cherries or the lovely chocolate-covered pineapple pieces that were last year's best.

Aldi had violet creams and rose creams last year, good quality chocolate too, none of your palm oil horror.

DrizzleMySwizzle · 03/11/2024 16:37

Indeed, it's the worst form of bullying the world has ever seen. So true.

Arrests should be made.

TianasBayou · 03/11/2024 16:39

Reporting back having refilled my tin of Quality Street at John Lewis.
The shop assistant insisted that I cram it full and then sellotaped the lid in place so it is well in excess of the 1.2kg capacity Xmas Smile

I have a lot of green triangles, purple ones and coffee creams. Beats the measly 2 or 3 in a regular tub.

That is exactly the response bullies always make. Think on that.

You seem to me like the kind of person who projects. An accusation is a confession.

Think on that.

DeanElderberry · 03/11/2024 16:53

keep going

DrizzleMySwizzle · 03/11/2024 16:54

Thanks. I will.

TammyOne · 03/11/2024 16:58

Yes, lots of chocolates, mince pies, twiglets, lebkuchen. I miss old Quality street SO MUCH though.

Well done ! Quality Street now have coffee creams?

Iliketulips · 03/11/2024 17:25

I buy nuts as I eat them anyway, and clemetines/mandarins which I'm already buying as part of the fruit we eat this time of year. We don't buy chocolates and sweets for general family eating as we get enough chocolates, biscuits as presents and struggle to get through them before valentines day/Easter, birthdays kick in.

TianasBayou · 03/11/2024 17:37

@AnnaDelvorkina coffee creams are exclusive to JL. My favourite!
