Friend has a large family, not stuck for money and never buys any of the above and never has. Their children are between 26 and 17. Got me wondering if it's quite the norm?

Thanks. I will.

@DrizzleMySwizzle watch out, or you'll end up as a piece of evidence on the "what makes you think MN is full of lefties" thread!

Melancholyflower · 03/11/2024 17:44

@TianasBayou How much are they in JL?

Dontlletmedownbruce · 03/11/2024 18:21

'When are we opening the Roses' is the defining moment of Christmas in our house. We literally discuss this in advance. It's like the official beginning of the holidays. Really it means those few days where you just sit around and eat too much.

I would be honoured! 😊

Not really except we do get a box of something like Quality streets which go in the stockings that decorate the tree. Other than that not particularly.

Katesboots · 03/11/2024 19:32

At Christmas I always buy some nice chocolates and chocolate biscuits. Love a tin of F&M Merrilossus and their rose and violet creams. Usually always order a box from Cocoa Black too. M&S Merry Munch and some Christmas percies are usually always part of the Christmas stash too. I don't really bother with nuts at Christmas unless they're covered in chocolate. Always get some nuts in for new year though.

£14 to refill previous years' personalised tin (1.2kg)
I didn't look at anything else so i don't know how much the new tins are. But I think they also had bags of coffee creams to buy separately.

Imagine never buying a tub of chocolates at Christmas time.

I'd be deeply dubious as to the character of such a person.

Me too. The way I feel about people who don't have any books in their house. Weirdos.

DreamyMe · 03/11/2024 20:53

Kitkat Selection Boxes, Chocolate Coins and Chocolate Reindeers every year.

Caspianberg · 03/11/2024 21:00

We don’t buy boxes of chocolate - not really a thing where we live
No nuts - allergy
No sweets- nobody likes them

It’s not all gruel though. We make homemade mince pies and gingerbread biscuits . Stockings have Lindt chocolate Santas in. Homemade sausage rolls and plenty of cheese and chutneys.

Lots of people make platters of various Christmas biscuits here, so all through December you eat a million mini cookies every time you visit someone.

I'm deeply dubious about a person who'd use the phrase 'enrobed fruits'.

🤔

Think the poster means they like chocolate raisins 😉

Hard hat on:
I don’t get the love for cheese.
It’s something I’ll buy to put in recipes ie omelettes.
If you bought me fancy cheese for Christmas it would go in the bin.
Flame me now.

DieDreiHexen · 04/11/2024 07:52

All of the MNers buying Fortnum and Mason chocolates etc, Do you brave the shop around Christmas time or do you order online?

I love their products, and send DH to the small branch near his office for chilli biscuits for my DF, but the big Fortnum's at Christmas is firmly on my list of hellishly crowded places to avoid between November and January. Am I all wrong about this?

Pumpkincozynights · 04/11/2024 07:56

Mil receives a Fortnum & Mason hamper every year for Christmas. She gives us the items she doesn't want. Can’t say I’ve ever been impressed with any of it. It’s ok but I wouldn’t pay their prices, it’s not things I would choose to spend a lot of money on.

coffeesaveslives · 04/11/2024 08:02

When I was growing up, Christmas was basically just a fancy roast dinner in terms of food - we didn't buy loads of extras like chocolates and crisps.

As an adult we do buy the odd thing like mince pies and posh crisps and I always get given loads of chocolates and biscuits through work but honestly, we never get through them all.

HarrietBond · 04/11/2024 08:02

Agree. It’s the name. There’s nothing from there you can’t buy similarly more cheaply elsewhere now we have online shops or locally from smaller shops if that’s your sort of thing. I’ve never thought any of the hampers looked particularly exciting.

RampantIvy · 04/11/2024 08:04

No. We usually get some as gifts, and that is plenty.

I'm not a huge chocolate muncher anyway.

Send it to me. I buy nice cheese every week...we have 2 independent cheese shops close by and a Booths 😀
You can have all the tins of chocolates we will be given, biscuits and mince pies.

HelenHywater · 04/11/2024 08:15

We used to have nuts and a nutcracker out at Christmas when I was young.

I'll get a box of Celebrations or Heroes that we'll eat while playing games. Other than that, my DC might get a tony chocoloney or similar as a stocking filler.

I usually walk by at Christmas time to look at how the building is decorated, but it’s always filled with tourists so I don’t go in to shop. I’ve bought gifts online and their service is brilliant- one was an anniversary present due to be delivered on a Sunday, evri had claimed the recipients weren’t in, I spoke with the customer services and somehow she got evri to deliver within the hour? I’d recommend online if you don’t want to face the crowds!

BiddyPop · 04/11/2024 13:18

I buy a large bag of Leonidas orangettes for my Christmas chocolate for our family of 3. I occasionally buy some nuts for snacking, as I do throughout the year, but I may buy other things to snack on instead. Dd is 18 and enjoys a variety of things to snack on as needed, but doesn't want or need a load of sweets and chocolate to enjoy the season.

Deathraystare · 04/11/2024 14:58

Yes when we had family Christmases. Quality Street, Roses et al, nuts and other stuff.

Tha t is how my family knew I was ill with the Noravirus when I refused Roses chocolates!

BondStreet · 04/11/2024 21:12

We love to celebrate Christmas with lot’s of lovely food.

Cheese in abundance, crackers and chutney
After eights
Stuffed dates
Some posh chocs from Selfridges
Nuts
