Do you buy chocolates, sweets and nuts etc at Christmas time?

Friend has a large family, not stuck for money and never buys any of the above and never has. Their children are between 26 and 17. Got me wondering if it's quite the norm?

Last year bought DS11 and DD13 a tub of Christmassy Haribo to share for their after school snack in the last week of school in December. Won’t buy this year as DD has braces and can’t eat sweets. Each had a bag of chocolate coins in their stocking and DH had a box of chocolates (that he shared). Also each of the DC had a chocolate advent calendar (gift from their aunt who came to stay for a weekend mid-November) and they will have the same this year.

I will buy a box of chocolates which we will share over 2 or 3 days. We also make our usuel chocolate Yule log as our Christmas dinner dessert and that lasts a couple more days too.

Don’t buy nuts.

Erm, not wankery just always available at Christmas from high end chocolate shops. Depends where you shop I suppose.

Edited

is this what constitutes a sick burn in the world of enrobed fruit scoffers?

Nah, it's a statement of fact. I buy this sort of stuff too.

Lead me to the orangettes!

My parents both had jobs where you’re given lots of gifts at Christmas. We were always drowning in boxes of chocolates of every kind, marzipan fruit, Turkish delight, and weird nougat nut things. Maybe it’s a reaction to that but I don’t buy chocolate or sweets for general consumption over Christmas. You can only eat so many Matchmakers and Thornton’s continentals before you snap.

Everyone gets some of their favourite chocolates as one of their gifts. There’s always stollen, Christmas biscuits, mince pies and clementines.

Isitfridayyetsophie · 02/11/2024 20:45

Actually a pp mentioned fortnums, I associate fortnums biscuits with Christmas far more than nuts and sweets. My husband has received at least one 1 hamper every year for the last 15 years as corporate gifts, so cognac butter, fig preserve and chocolate & orange biscuits make me think of the run up to Christmas!

I'm sure you can find your own way.

SatinHeart · 02/11/2024 20:47

No we don't buy sweets and chocolates at Christmas apart from chocolate coins in DCs stockings. We do tend to have mince pies/Christmas cake/stollen and other Lidl-type goodies in the house all through the festive period though, so not short of sweet treats!

Used to buy nuts but haven't bothered the last couple of years.l as I was the only one that really ate them.

DeanElderberry · 02/11/2024 20:48

Yes, I buy the fancy stuff that isn't available all year round - and then put it in air tight tins so I have it for the next 12 months.

Ah every Christmas my Grandparents used to have a coffee table in the dining room set out with whole nuts to crack, chocolate covered nuts, peanuts and some chocolates all set out in little dishes, and then a box of after eights. Gorgeous memories ❤️

I buy all of the above (but not cracking nuts) for us at Christmas

kiraric · 02/11/2024 20:59

Are the bananas in pyjamas enrobed fruit?

AnnaDelvorkina · 02/11/2024 20:59

Thanks to previous posters for reminding me about Stollen. Will definitely get some Stollen, maybe Panettone too.

GreyCarpet · 02/11/2024 21:00

No.

I'm not particularly fussed about sweets, a lot of chocolate is horrible now, my parents used to buy nuts but I never have.

We buy different food at Christmas but I've never really got the over indulgence part of Christmas and eating huge amounts food. Its just never appealed 🤷🏻‍♀️

merryandbrightdelight · 02/11/2024 21:00

I always remember my dmum buying similar and we weren't allowed to touch them because they were 'for Christmas'!

you're not meant to make light of enrobed fruits.

it's very bad form.

Imagine never buying a tub of chocolates at Christmas time.

I'd be deeply dubious as to the character of such a person.

Me too.
I personally buy chocolates and nuts all year around and have an excellent character. Nuts are very good with porridge or in brownies. I don’t buy sugary nuts or covered chocolate nuts, just ordinary packs from Aldi.
I also love seasonal biscuits and chocolates around Christmas time but not Roses/Quality street/Celebrations, I don’t like them at all.

sprigatito · 02/11/2024 21:07

Especially when they hail from a "high-end chocolate shop". Show some respect, plebs!

Daisy12Maisie · 02/11/2024 21:07

We spend a lot of Christmas with my mum and she always has those things. I wouldn't buy a tin of chocolates for my house because I would eat the whole tin then have to buy more. I live with 2 teenagers.

tarheelbaby · 02/11/2024 21:07

Yes, my US family gave Whitman's Sampler (box of choccies) and plenty of nuts (pecans grew locally, were a staple nut for any cooking and eating), GPs gave boxes of citrus fruit.
UK in-laws have boxes of choccies (fancy brands like Elizabeth Shaw) and sugared fruit. They all like nuts but don't have them for cracking. I know a secret recipe for glazing pecans so I make these and give jars of them to (favourite) rellies. DH loved these and loved marzipan too.

Grepes · 02/11/2024 19:35

No, I didn’t realise this was a thing?! I buy sweets and chocolate for Halloween for those that knock on the door. We don’t have that many visitors at Christmas, just family (and we don’t buy sweets/nuts/chocolate especially for Christmas at home, neither do my husband’s family), and for our big Christmas party (friends), we have a savoury food mostly and a couple of desserts.

Have you not seen big tubs of these things in the shops around Christmas time?

usernother · 02/11/2024 21:09

Used to but due to having no willpower have stopped.

mathanxiety · 02/11/2024 21:09

Just chocolate - a chocolate orange and a box of chocolate truffles. Santa brings little chocolate Santas to all the DCs, plus chocolate coins, even though the youngest is 23.

I always buy clementines and Texas pink grapefruit.

mathanxiety · 02/11/2024 21:12

I also buy candy canes that go on the tree and get nibbled as the days go on.
