Is anyone awake and can humour through the night?

Currently away on holiday. 2am here. Amazing place to stay for a much needed break. Rubbish year with two bereavements, amongst plethora of stresses that would make your average soap opera appear tame… Anyway, I digress…
Suddenly became very ill with D&V six hours ago. Cannot keep anything down but am very thirsty so trying to sip water. I am DESPERATE for a pint of iced water to glug, but I know that would come back up.
Although things have slowed down a bit, can’t sleep, keep having to run to the loo and tummy is so painful.
Despite having a primary school age child, don’t think I’ve had a bug like this for about 7 years. Out of practice and it’s absolutely minging.
Anyone got any top tips or can share something to distract myself with?
Stuck in a hotel with my husband and child with WiFi that doesn’t seem to let you stream iPlayer etc.
It’ll seem better in the morning, right?

God you poor thing. Can you phone to reception or ask DH to nip down and get you some dioralyte type sachets? They might perk you up a bit. I’d avoid ice unless the water is absolutely safe and the machines are cleaned regularly.

Also make sure housekeeping come in in the morning and fog the bathroom - it will stop DH & DC catching it.

I hope you manage some kip. Have you got an audiobook or podcast to hand?

Ginkypig · 25/10/2024 00:09

I won’t be up for you through the night but wanted to say hello and reassurance you that yes it will look better in the morning light and that hopefully you will be able to drop off to sleep soon have you got anything like a bin to put next to the bed incase you need it?

TruthThatsHardAsSteel · 25/10/2024 00:09

Oh no you poor thing. Can you try wee teaspoons of water. Xxx sending solidarity

xmasdealhunter · 25/10/2024 00:11

You poor thing! Could you ring down to reception or get DH to nip down and see if they have a hot water bottle? That should help to ease the pain in your stomach slightly x

Doable · 25/10/2024 00:12

Can you make a rehydration mixture with sugar salt and water?
Is the WiFi capable of letting you download a audible book?

Thank you for the hello. That’s lovely. The bin and I have made good friends! 😂 Hope you sleep well

Horrible feeling ill and through the night. On the shallow other hand...think of the weight loss when it is done?

Genius. Normally I travel with one as I have endometriosis in the bowel making this type of escapade even more fun. Normally my constitution is cast iron!

How awful! I always think that holidays are the absolute worst time to get sick as you don't have the space or support that you would have at home. Be kind to yourself!

ThatAgileGoldMoose · 25/10/2024 00:17

Oh bless you that is rough.

I'd probably chug a pint of water and risk it coming back up so I'm probably not the best to advise!

Needed! And a great silver lining. At least I’ve got to enjoy beautiful food and drink thus far. The year of stress has not been helpful to my waistline (or wrinkles for that matter).

Oh you poor thing. I had this on holiday in Turkey last year, it’s unpleasant at the best of time but not being at home was hard. I think I’ve had the voms every single year with my children since they were born and for me, I try to do without much water during the ‘everything is coming up’ phase, I feel like it prolongs the vomiting, but I’m not with you and wouldn’t want to give you advice that leaves you dehydrated. I usually start with tiny sips once everything has slowed down and when there’s been a wee bit of sleep. Diaoralyte worth a go but tbh when I’m actually between voms, the taste is so foul it’s impossible.

You could plan what to have first when you’re able, and ask DH to get supplies before he goes out. My post vom list is usually flat coke, white toast and salty crisps. Good luck and hope you can at least lie in the sun as you recover.

Funnily enough, that’s where we are! The October sun is fantastic. Go home Saturday evening which is currently quite hard to imagine…. 🙈

Can you get hold of some coke and open it so it goes flat? Then take sips?
Hope you and DH feel better soon!

Zamazenta · 25/10/2024 00:33

Hi OP
I'm heading to bed now but just wanted to say offer support.

Ask for some coke and salted crisps. Let the coke go flat and lick the crisps if you can't stomach eating them.

Try some ice lollies as well and if you have a calpol syringe with you try dropping liquid into your inside cheek slowly.

Take care x

Goodnessgraciousfrog · 25/10/2024 00:35

Thank you all for your lovely support. i’m not the greatest at sleeping at the best of times, and miss my pets desperately (mainly as I have no qualms about waking them up if I need company in the night 🤣). Your kindness and tips is hugely appreciated. Have access to books on Spotify premium - already caught up on a lot of podcasts this week!

Only have the same advice as others have given but I can empathise as I have been in the same position. Hope it settles and you can get some sleep x

Goodnessgraciousfrog · 25/10/2024 00:38

I could do a lolly just now. It’s one of those things that’s annoying about being away from home. There’s a freezer of them near one of the bars - but not sure I can make it that far as yet… also, I am just the sort of person to fall over / doing something farcical and trigger a middle of the night security incident.

Sympathies! I get a sickness bug on average every 6-8 weeks because my immune system is shit and they're horrific 😭😭 tomorrow can you get some apple juice to water down and sip and a bag of salt and vinegar crisps for when you've stopped vomming? The only combo that brings me back from the brink of death!

averitablevampire · 25/10/2024 00:51

If you've got the Ds with the Vs, mix a pinch of salt and pinch of sugar to a bottle of mineral water. Shake until dissolved and sip slowly. It's not a cure, it'll just slow your guts down and help absorb a bit more fluid.
Good luck. It's miserable being ill at the best of times, but doubly so when you are away from home 🏡 .

We've all been ill here the last week or so sympathies.

Wrt iPlayer streaming it could be a rights thing? I think BBC, Sky, ITV and 4 etc won't be stream able but have you tried Netflix or, failing that YouTube?

In circumstances like this previously (poor WiFi and phone signal) I've wasted time scouring for stuff I've downloaded and forgotten and then watched any old scraps to pass the time.

Hope you feel better soon and able to enjoy the rest of your holiday.

I’m here with you on the “holy shit I am peeing out of my bumhole” front.
I am 7 days post c-section and had constipation earlier this evening so took a bit of lactulose and have just woken up to a shit load (excuse the pun) of farting and pooing 🙄
I don’t know if it was the medicine or the chicken I had for dinner yesterday…
And soon I have to go and take over from my husband for looking after our baby girl 👧
oh the joys…..
we are in this together 💪🏻😘
