Is anyone awake and can humour through the night?

Currently away on holiday. 2am here. Amazing place to stay for a much needed break. Rubbish year with two bereavements, amongst plethora of stresses that would make your average soap opera appear tame… Anyway, I digress…
Suddenly became very ill with D&V six hours ago. Cannot keep anything down but am very thirsty so trying to sip water. I am DESPERATE for a pint of iced water to glug, but I know that would come back up.
Although things have slowed down a bit, can’t sleep, keep having to run to the loo and tummy is so painful.
Despite having a primary school age child, don’t think I’ve had a bug like this for about 7 years. Out of practice and it’s absolutely minging.
Anyone got any top tips or can share something to distract myself with?
Stuck in a hotel with my husband and child with WiFi that doesn’t seem to let you stream iPlayer etc.
It’ll seem better in the morning, right?

Thank you all for your lovely support. i’m not the greatest at sleeping at the best of times, and miss my pets desperately (mainly as I have no qualms about waking them up if I need company in the night 🤣). Your kindness and tips is hugely appreciated. Have access to books on Spotify premium - already caught up on a lot of podcasts this week!

What kind of pets do you have?! Maybe distraction will help? I've been there with the D&V in Egypt many times so I completely understand how you're feeling!

buffyfaithspike · 25/10/2024 01:20

I started with the same on Saturday. Well a temp and shivering and then Monday brought the world falling out...
I'm fed up of it!

I’m here with you on the “holy shit I am peeing out of my bumhole” front.
I am 7 days post c-section and had constipation earlier this evening so took a bit of lactulose and have just woken up to a shit load (excuse the pun) of farting and pooing 🙄
I don’t know if it was the medicine or the chicken I had for dinner yesterday…
And soon I have to go and take over from my husband for looking after our baby girl 👧
oh the joys…..
we are in this together 💪🏻😘

😂😂😂 Peeing out of your bum hole. That’s hilarious! Post op constipation is hideous. Been there, done that! You sound amazingly chipper considering you have a newborn in the house. I hope it settles down soon. Thank you for your reply.

We've all been ill here the last week or so sympathies.

Wrt iPlayer streaming it could be a rights thing? I think BBC, Sky, ITV and 4 etc won't be stream able but have you tried Netflix or, failing that YouTube?

In circumstances like this previously (poor WiFi and phone signal) I've wasted time scouring for stuff I've downloaded and forgotten and then watched any old scraps to pass the time.

Hope you feel better soon and able to enjoy the rest of your holiday.

Good idea. Smart phones are such a lifesaver during times like this.

Thank you. Two cats and a dog. All rescues. Latter in the newest additional and an absolute buffoon. in the meantime, one of the hotel’s (very well looked after) cats has snuck in and gone to sleep. It’s a big comfort.

Sending solidarity. That’s absolutely rubbish and I hope you feel much better soon. I’m normally pretty resilient, but had weeks of being ill with ENT complications and am just done with being sick!

How are you doing?

Can you get some ice from the hotel? Sucking on an ice cube gives you a small amount water and helps your mouth feel more refreshed.

Surely tomorrow your DH entertains your son while you get some sleep. Or at lease he does the morning and you do the afternoon.

Or is there a children's club?

Thanks for checking in! A cup of ice procured around 1am from the hotel bar has been a life saver. Making do until it’s morning here. Throwing up has eased; just regular bathroom trips. Managed to dose for 20 mins. It’s the not sleeping that’s a killer. DH and DS also ill, but not with the same thing. Wish you could pause holidays to enjoy later!

In future
Avoid all Ice
Only bottled water and make sure the cap isnt broken

No ‘fresh salad or vegetables’ that has been washed in tap water

Those are my rules

sashh · 25/10/2024 02:55

All three of you ill? That's not much fun.

What's your room like? Can you stay in tomorrow? Watch TV and get room service?

Rainbows89 · 25/10/2024 03:14

That’s so sweet a cat had snuck in! That’s my sort of hotel.

I don’t have any advice but just wanted to say that I hope you manage to get some sleep soon and feel better really soon too.

If you've got the Ds with the Vs, mix a pinch of salt and pinch of sugar to a bottle of mineral water. Shake until dissolved and sip slowly. It's not a cure, it'll just slow your guts down and help absorb a bit more fluid.
Good luck. It's miserable being ill at the best of times, but doubly so when you are away from home 🏡 .

Thank you! Managed this with some sugar - deffo helped. Will be on the hunt tomorrow.

Yup! Just thrown off the cold I came over with. Husband hideous fever which finally broke yesterday and child randomly sick. He is almost never sick. Fun fun fun! 🤩 At least DH is better than he was and can function again.

It’s a lovely cat and well looked after. Resort has a vaccination and neutering programme, a cat house and are well fed. Great to see. They aren’t daft these moggies and spot a soft touch a mile off. Many a cuddle on a sun lounger 😂

katscamel · 25/10/2024 03:30

Hopefully you're getting some sleep. In a similar vein to others, try 7-up (full sugar variety) with a touch of added salt. Used to be used as an army trick to replace electrolytes and I still use it today though don't know if it's still advised.
Try and get to a pharmacy and get anti sickness meds and Buscopan and though I know it's better to not take immodium maybe some for the journey home.

Goodnessgraciousfrog · 25/10/2024 03:40

Thank you to all the lovely kind people that have kept me going. Dawn not far off here, and a beautiful starry night. Coming up to some significant anniversaries of my mum and dad’s deaths. Dark nights feel pretty dark just now so I really appreciate your support.
Sleep still evading me as back is now somewhat painful from my body’s exit strategy.

sockness bugs are hard enough let alone when your away from home. I hope you’re feeling better in the morning, suck on some ice if you can and some water in dribs and drabs to allow you to hydrate yourself. I hope you’re able to enjoy some of your holiday!

FairCrow · 25/10/2024 04:00

I don't know what things are like in Turkey, but in certain places you can request the doctor visits your hotel.
My husband was ill in a similar way in South America and the doctor visited and gave an antibiotic shot.
If it is bacterial, this can help.

It is also cheaper than in the UK. And you can claim it on travel insurance, usually.

sashh · 25/10/2024 05:09

Stray cats in Turkey are well looked after.

During covid the government made the equivalent of local authorities to feed them so the public who normally fed them would not be put at risk.

Any chance of a photo OP?

TruthThatsHardAsSteel · 25/10/2024 05:27

Sorry was watching TV with husband after a late night at work. Slept now awake from feeding stupid cats. Checking in on you op. Gonna read the rest of the thread now. Hoping this is short lived xx

FloofyKat · 25/10/2024 00:31

Can you get hold of some coke and open it so it goes flat? Then take sips?
Hope you and DH feel better soon!

Edited

Adding a small bit of sugar speeds that up (source 80s child)

TruthThatsHardAsSteel · 25/10/2024 05:36

Ahhhh cats. Boy cat used the bed that was given to us after sitting unused for months. He's so daft and cute. The old lady will want in it soon. 🐈

Hope you can find some way to feel better enough to fly sat 💖

Last Time I was in Turkey, we used to hear the call for prayer very very regularly. It was disconcerting the first night but actually became quite comforting very quickly.

Is anyone awake and can humour through the night?
Goodnessgraciousfrog · 25/10/2024 05:55

Thanks so much all! Daylight is here now high always makes things better. Boys still sleeping. Vomiting has eased off which is a massive relief. So has extreme thirst.
@sashh - this I did not know! High end resort and appeared to be a valued part of the team. This is the lovely cat who kept me
company through the night.

That's a cute potato 😻😻

Is husband well enough to go get you some supplies? So glad things have eased a little. 🤞.

sashh · 25/10/2024 06:36

Lovely cat.

Cats are considered clean in Islam. The prophet Mohammed once cut his sleeve off because a cat was asleep on it and he did not want to disturb it but it was time to pray.
