Acceptable ‘birthday’ cake?

Flutterbycustard · 20/10/2024 10:17

I offered to bake my husband a birthday cake. He asked for no icing and something a bit different. So I went for a pineapple upside down cake.

I’m 50% happy with it and 50% thinking it doesn’t look like a ‘celebration’ cake. I’ll probably pop to the store and grab a decorated one to go with it. We’re off to lunch with family today to celebrate.

Do you think it’s ok? Or wild you keep it for a at home dessert and just get a bigger cake at the store? DH hasn’t seen it yet; he’ll tell me it’s great…anything to avoid having to stop at the shop.

It’s not a huge deal, but some unbiased advice would be appreciated. I completely understand if you don’t feel it says ‘birthday’.

Ok have settled down a bit, so I'll say my piece on toppers (with the caveat that they can be nice, I understand people like a bit of bling, nothing wrong with that, etc etc etc!).

But in this specific instance my opinion is this:

All that work on a lovely, sentimental, personalised decorative touch - no other person in the entire world will ever have that exact cake since even if someone does use the same idea it will still be ever so slightly different - on a beautifully homemade cake that the birthday person has specifically requested...

And then you want to cover that up with some big bit of loud plastic that looks exactly like every other loud bit of plastic on every other Instagram photo? And somehow that translates to more effort made?

No. Keep it real and keep it personal.

Edited

That’s so nice. Thank you.

I would be so pleased if someone made that cake for me.

A few candles would be a nice finishing touch.

HappyDane · 20/10/2024 12:31

I'm sad now...can't make the cake(s) today as it's an absolutely manky day and we're not going out. Trying to think if I have anything else I can use as a baking tin!

Need freshly baked cake with cream today.

Absolutely love it. It's simple but spot on and perfectly fits what your DH asked for. My mum used to make a lovely pineapple upside down pudding. I'm definitely going to make the cake version. 😀

viques · 20/10/2024 12:33

I love a good pineapple upside down cake, and imo it is much harder to make a good one than to knock out a standard sponge, so I would be thrilled if someone made that for me. Maybe a couple of candles just to underline the fact that it is a cake not a pudding! And some good vanilla icecream, because then it can be a pudding too!

Iamthemoom · 20/10/2024 12:33

It looks gorgeous and I would be delighted if someone made me this. I hate the taste of supermarket cakes and love a proper home baked cake. I might have to screenshot the picture and send to DD as a big hint when my birthday comes around! Enjoy the celebration. 🎉

(Feel bad now...not trying to make a big deal of the suggestion! It was a perfectly fine suggestion and OP even said she loves a topper. Lots of people do. I just mean that this lovely cake deserves to be allowed to shine)

I really appreciate it. I do love toppers and I do like the one posted! They definitely have their place in my house! I’m usually one for the bigger the better. I’d definitely have purchased if I had time.

But I also think what you said was lovely and has made me feel better as I wouldn’t have time to buy a topper for today. It’s made me feel much more special.

What temp do you bake it at?
What diameter tin do you use

Sorry! I baked at 190 degrees and I used 8 inch tins I believe.

To me it says 'birthday', 'love', 'skill', 'delicious' and 'none of that horrible over-sweet icing that ruins most cakes'.
He's a lucky man.

Taytoface · 20/10/2024 12:37

YABU. Now I want fucking cake.

afrikat · 20/10/2024 12:37

Wow I would love this cake and would be so chuffed someone had gone to the effort of making it for me. Now craving pineapple cake...

Lovely

isthereaway · 20/10/2024 12:40

It's LOVELY -esp the heart & stars decorations. Take it, (& no store bought one to detract from your handiwork!)

LemonPeonies · 20/10/2024 12:42

I would be over the moon if someone made me a cake like that! Looks beautiful and yummy

Jimmyspiano · 20/10/2024 12:50

It was homemade by someone who loves him. It meets his specifications. It looks and I am sure tastes delicious. Just because it is not a traditional birthday cake does not mean that it is not perfect for your DH.

BobbyBiscuits · 20/10/2024 12:54

It looks gorgeous! And plenty 'birthday-ish' looking. If he doesn't want icing then how much more decorative can it be?
You don't need a shop bought one as well.
I love it, and would be over the moon with that for my birthday. X

Rainbow1901 · 20/10/2024 12:54

Looks lovely to me! Your DH is so lucky that you have done what he has asked for - and obviously made with love 😍

SLRUS · 20/10/2024 12:56

I love it! And if it's not chocolate I don't tend to give cakes a second look. Very obviously made with love. He's one lucky guy

Cesarina · 20/10/2024 12:57

I've only read the first two pages of this thread, so I may be too "late to the party"..........
But, if your DH doesn't like it, I'll do you a huge favour and take it off your hands, (purely to help you out, you understand). And if there's a queue, I'll join it!

BeNavyCrab · 20/10/2024 13:00

@Flutterbycustard It's a beautiful cake and nicely decorated. Even better it's exactly what he wanted. I'd be very impressed seeing that cake and be thinking what a brilliant loving wife he has! I always think that having someone make a cake for you is something really special. The photo I've attached is a lemon drizzle cake my darling daughter made for me. It's rather sloping because we live on a boat that is leaning over to the quay when the tide is high. It's not going to win any competitions looks wise but it was a fantastic flavour and I really appreciated it because I'm severely disabled and not safe in the kitchen any more. Anyone who'd judge you harshly for your cake definitely needs their eyesight testing or an extra helping of kindness. I can see why your husband is proud of your culinary skills. 😍

It looks amazing
As long as he likes pineapple I'm sure he will love it!
