Acceptable ‘birthday’ cake?

Flutterbycustard · 20/10/2024 10:17

I offered to bake my husband a birthday cake. He asked for no icing and something a bit different. So I went for a pineapple upside down cake.

I’m 50% happy with it and 50% thinking it doesn’t look like a ‘celebration’ cake. I’ll probably pop to the store and grab a decorated one to go with it. We’re off to lunch with family today to celebrate.

Do you think it’s ok? Or wild you keep it for a at home dessert and just get a bigger cake at the store? DH hasn’t seen it yet; he’ll tell me it’s great…anything to avoid having to stop at the shop.

It’s not a huge deal, but some unbiased advice would be appreciated. I completely understand if you don’t feel it says ‘birthday’.

Yes, I was getting 80’s vibes. Showing my age 😂

It’s mostly DH’s family and mostly the younger ones. Perhaps another reason I was a bit unsure.

There's nothing wrong with a 'summer party cake from the 1980s'?

'Modern' doesn't always mean better, especially when it's at the expense of what it tastes like - your cake will be much nicer than anything from a supermarket that's made from industrial ingredients and covered in loads of icing.

You can tell from the piped cream and cherry heart that an effort has been made. Have confidence in your own choices and don't worry about what others who value appearance over taste might think.

girlofsandwich · 20/10/2024 11:15

YUM! That is so cute, and really well put together. I'd be thrilled with that!

Toddlerteaplease · 20/10/2024 11:15

It looks amazing! I'd be very happy with that if I was your DH!

It looks lovely and tasty, when the candles are on it will definitely have enough of a birthday look!

GroovyChick87 · 20/10/2024 11:16

I think it looks great, well done.

spiderlight · 20/10/2024 11:17

It's perfect!! No need for a shop bought one.

Parry5timesbeforedeath · 20/10/2024 11:17

I would just love that. Love the love heart as well! I would be thrilled.

ssd · 20/10/2024 11:17

That cake looks fantastic op

ChampagneLassie · 20/10/2024 11:19

I think this looks much better and I’m sure will taste much better than a shop bought cake (unless you’re taking some sort of high end patisserie, supermarket cakes are a bit meh). It look fab and what he asked for

honeylulu · 20/10/2024 11:19

I would absolutely love that! Pineapple Upside Down Cake is fabulous and it fits the brief of "no icing" and "a bit different". Looks beautiful too.

My mantra is if you can stick a candle in it, it's a cake! My BIL who hates sweet stuff once had a pork pie with candles on and my FIL whose birthday was just after Christmas used to have a Yule Log with a candle on!

afaloren · 20/10/2024 11:20

It looks fabulous OP, much nicer than a shop bought cake. I love the heart. Well done you. Do you want to make my next birthday cake?

I think if given the choice, DH would have definitely gone for the pork pie with a candle in it!

I love it! might steal that idea
Is he generally a fan of cake? If he doesn't want a normal birthday cake and he likes pineapple then I can imagine he'd be surprised and thrilled with that. Shop bought cakes are generally horrible compared with home made, especially that awful fondant icing. Too sweet and like eating plastic.

diddl · 20/10/2024 11:25

Looks fabulous!

I've never made it with a bottom layer as well.

I want a cheesecake for my bday-NY baked style.

It's my bday so I can have what I want!😂

Pocketfullofdogtreats · 20/10/2024 11:27

Actually, seriously, it's DH's birthday soon and he's not a big cake eater, in fact he doesn't like sweet stuff generally, but he loves pineapple and I think he might like that. So thank you! 😊

user47 · 20/10/2024 11:28

That is a fantastic cake OP. I am well jel and am stealing your idea.

Noodlepots · 20/10/2024 11:28

I would like that a million times more than ‘normal’ birthday cake.
as others have said stick a fancy candle or topper in it if you really feel the need

Confusedgoosey · 20/10/2024 11:31

It's gorgeous. Do you have the recipe?

Feelingblue77 · 20/10/2024 11:33

Just to add to many other comments, I think it’s absolutely lovely and fits the brief exactly. I’d be delighted if this was made for me.
Have a fab time celebrating x

Flutterbycustard · 20/10/2024 10:26

You don’t think I’d look a bit mean?

If I can get away with not buying one, that would genuinely be great.

Homemade of any kind always better than shop bought😁 Coincidence……I was thinking of making my OH a Pineappleupsidedowncake…..he loves them. He’s not keen on icing, marzipan but he loves covered and filled with butter cream. Have a nice time👍

Larrythebloodycat · 20/10/2024 11:36

It's a beautiful cake.

RampantIvy · 20/10/2024 11:36

Blimey! Don't waste your money on an inferior shop bought cake.

Only children want gimmicky iced cakes. Adults who like cake would appreciate a good home baked cake baked with love rather than a cheap and nasty supermarket cake full of artificial ingredients.

Substance over style wins over style over substance IMO.

@Flutterbycustard For what it's worth I think your cake looks fantastic and celebratory.

Newterm · 20/10/2024 11:38

That is one fabulous cake

TentEntWenTyfOur · 20/10/2024 11:42

It looks like an honest-to-goodness proper homemade cake, made with love, and I think it is great.

katepilar · 20/10/2024 11:44

Its lovely! Absolutely no need for a shop bought cake!

I personally would cover the sides with cream/filling and stick some of the fruit onto the sides. That would be more of a festive cake feel as opposed to Sunday type of bake for me.
