Acceptable ‘birthday’ cake?

I offered to bake my husband a birthday cake. He asked for no icing and something a bit different. So I went for a pineapple upside down cake.

I’m 50% happy with it and 50% thinking it doesn’t look like a ‘celebration’ cake. I’ll probably pop to the store and grab a decorated one to go with it. We’re off to lunch with family today to celebrate.

Do you think it’s ok? Or wild you keep it for a at home dessert and just get a bigger cake at the store? DH hasn’t seen it yet; he’ll tell me it’s great…anything to avoid having to stop at the shop.

It’s not a huge deal, but some unbiased advice would be appreciated. I completely understand if you don’t feel it says ‘birthday’.

Shop bought cakes taste awful. This looks yummy and shows you've really put tine and thought into something that he'd like. That's so much nicer than something quickly picked up on Tesco!

Birthday cakes normally have that lovely decoration don’t they. I do love a proper birthday cake.

I think your decoration is just as lovely with the pineapple and fruits. I’m pregnant and you’ve made me crave cake of any kind now 😂.

Pancakeflipper · 20/10/2024 10:34

Do not buy a cake.
Ones that someone made for you is so special. It rarely happens when you are a grown-up.

It looks yummy. I'd be very happy to be a guest and served a slice of this.

I’m so sorry lol!
But I think we all deserve cake today, so send someone to get you some. ☺️

Thanks again. Going to box it up and I’ll forget the extra cake. 👍

This looks lovely and fits the brief!

Good on you for doing what he wants for his birthday. I hope you get the cake YOu want for YOUR birthday!

Needmorelego · 20/10/2024 10:37

That looks delicious.
Can I have a slice please 🍍

yipyipyop · 20/10/2024 10:37

It looks great. I'm sure he'll love it!

RaininSummer · 20/10/2024 10:37

Looks lush. I can't stand cakes covered in icing and gloop.

BroccoliSurprise · 20/10/2024 10:38

Is the bottom layer regular sponge? Just planning on stealing this idea for a future birthday!

Oh well I’m super flattered!
Yes, bottom layer is vanilla sponge.

I totally see the pineapple heart now! It's fab x

HappyDane · 20/10/2024 10:42

It looks delightful and will taste amazing, I'm sure. I see you've already decided to skip the store bought one which is absolutely the right decision IMO. Homemade and actually delicious beats overblown and artificial tasting every time! Have a lovely day.

RandomMan2 · 20/10/2024 10:42

The cake looks amazing. I'm a fellow cake lover who doesn't like icing and I would be absolutely overjoyed to receive that.

ButterAsADip · 20/10/2024 10:43

God I love PUD cake. Yum. Will have to make one. Whack a candle in it, job done.

HappyDane · 20/10/2024 10:46

Same here! Been meaning to try making little individual ones for a while now and this has tipped me right over to doing so asap. Wonder if I can get it done by tonight (need to buy very small cake tins).

Daisymae55 · 20/10/2024 10:47

It’s exactly what your husband wanted, looks lovely and looks like it would also taste delicious. Why by another cake?

I also hate icing and typical birthday cakes and I’d be over the moon with a cake like this! Another cake would be wasteful

Mildmanneredmum · 20/10/2024 10:49

I would feel so honoured to have that cake! Made with love and will taste soooo much better than a shop bought/factory made cake

LushLemonTart · 20/10/2024 10:51

I'd much prefer that to shop bought. I love pineapple. Well done.
Tell us what he thinks.

But your DH doesn't want a 'proper birthday cake'. He said no icing and something a bit different. That cake looks fab, fits the brief and will taste far better than anything from a shop.

I'm another one who's probably been inspired to make pineapple upside down cake for the first time in ages.

PatriciaHolm · 20/10/2024 10:53

I think that's just wonderful. And so so much nicer than a shop bought thing!

So a regular sponge on bottom with a pineapple upside down sponge on top? DD and DS would adore that! Might make it at Christmas - neither of them like Christmas cake but that looks just perfect.

I've seen people make small cakes in half size baked bean tins. For mini pineapple upside down cakes, the tins the pineapple comes in would probably be perfect.

You'd need to buy 4-6 tins of pineapple and would have a huge excess of pineapple, but you could probably make sweet and sour chicken, pineapple fried rice or just eat the pineapple as fruit over the next few days to use it up, but that's what I'd do.

OldTinHat · 20/10/2024 10:55

That looks fantastic! And you can still stick a candle in the top. Please could you save me a small, tiny slice?!

teatoast8 · 20/10/2024 10:56

I would eat it! Looks so good x
