Best casting decisions

Have been rewatching The Sandman on Netflix and am again blown away by Tom Sturridge as Dream/Morpheus. He's so incredibly otherworldly and compelling, such a great casting choice for that role.

Anyone fancy sharing their favourite casting decisions? (Or worst! 😁)

Viggo Mortensen as Aragorn in LOTR. Perfect casting.

100% agree, it's crazy to think he was a last minute casting choice!
My youngest is heavily into BBC Merlin from the 2000s at the moment and I think Bradley James as Prince Arthur and Colin Morgan as Merlin were inspired casting. Lovely chemistry and characterisation (also Bradley James is so insanely handsome, which feels less creepy to acknowledge as a middle aged mum in the knowledge that the actor is now almost the same age as me!)

@FridgeJenga completely disagree re Helena Bonham Carter - she doesn't act; just plays herself - in various decibels / 'shriekiness'! Another Nepo baby.

MrsCatE · 08/10/2024 03:08

@Matildatoldsuchdreadfullies completely agree re Joan Hickson as 'Miss Marple'. I'm sure I read that Agatha Christie said she would be the perfect Miss Marple however, far too young at the time!

Eddie Redmayne in The theory of everything
Rachel Mcadams as Regina George

Not so good - the cast of it ends with us. Blake Lively is beautiful and was great but overall they all looked too old and the men looked wrong.

The Crane brothers in Frasier. Inspired casting and they even look alike!

Joan Hickson - Miss Marple.

YES. Apparently even Agatha Christie loves Joan Hickson and felt she was perfect as Jane Marple.

Geraldine McEwan as Mrs Proudie and Alan Rickman as Mr Slope in The Barchester Chronicles.

Brian Blessed as Squire Western in The History of Tom Jones.

Robert Lindsay as Captain Pellew in Hornblower.

The entire cast of Cold Comfort Farm - particularly Ian McKellen as Amos. "There be no butter in Hell!"

😂😂😂😂😂

Carouselfish · 08/10/2024 09:50

@Catsmere film not show though! What do you think of the AMC show?

Catsmere · 08/10/2024 11:02

Sorry @Carouselfish you've lost me (late here and I've posted a few times on the thread) - what's the AMC show?

AllTheAll · 08/10/2024 11:26

@Catsmere
Oh, Cold Comfort Farm. I never get tired of it.
"He'll wash if I tells him to"! Or some bad paraphrase. I think I read somewhere that they let the actors carry on with whatever melange of accents that they chose to depict the character of the rural setting. Sir Ian's is epic.

Catsmere · 08/10/2024 20:46

@AllTheAll Amos's frothraging at his unfortunate Church of the Quivering Brethren is so funny! Not to mention "Seth, you drain the well. There's a neighbour missing."

GeneHuntsCowboyBoots · 08/10/2024 21:13

Philip Glenister as Gene Hunt in Life on Mars and Ashes to Ashes.

And Shaun Evans as Endeavour

Totally agree with this.

I much prefer Geraldine McEwan as Marple.

Fescue · 09/10/2024 07:30

Glenn Close in Fatal Attraction.

Interview with the Vampire! It's on BBC I player. Season 1 is fab. Season 2 rather annoying but still, Lestat c'est parfait! It is more sexy and bloody than the books but worth it. We even get to see Nicki in S2. And S3 is coming with Wolfkiller!

Pedallleur · 09/10/2024 19:37

Godfather. Just everyone of the cast all at the top of their game. Sigourney Weaver as Ripley. Crane brothers in Frasier as was Lilith and Roz. Glover and Gibson in Lethal Weapon. Viggo in LOTR. Just perfect as Aragorn

Thanks! Didn't know that existed and it would have to be an improvement. I won't be seeing it, though. I don't have BBC iplayer (I'm in Australia) and my days of watching or reading vampire stories are looooong gone. TBH I loathed Anne Rice's stuff - only saw IWTV because a bunch of friends went as an outing.

Absolutely Eddie Redmayne.
I heard Stephen Hawking commenting on Theory of Everything when it came out, and he said it took him a while to remember that it wasn't old footage of himself.
