Have been rewatching The Sandman on Netflix and am again blown away by Tom Sturridge as Dream/Morpheus. He's so incredibly otherworldly and compelling, such a great casting choice for that role.

Anyone fancy sharing their favourite casting decisions? (Or worst! 😁)

Gene Wilder as Willy Wonka. He WAS Willy Wonka.

Totally agree, he was brilliant
I loved Gene Wilder

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 07/10/2024 16:36

Also, although he's no longer 'acceptable'. Kevin Spacey in The Usual Suspects.

Snoopsnoggysnog · 07/10/2024 16:39

Alicia Silverstone in Clueless - perfect!

Not so much - Daphne and the mum in Bridgerton, can’t remember her name. Daphne looks like a child compared to her on screen lover and the mum just looks all wrong to me.

All of the above.

Gary Oldman in everything he’s done.

Showing my age here - Jim Hacker, Sir Humphrey and Bernard, Yes Minister/Prime Minister.

I still watch it now and it becomes more and more relevant.
Sir Humphrey was the original Spin Doctor…

Hattie McDaniel was fantastic but we are going to have to agree to disagree re Judy Garland.
Over the Rainbow was perfect but I read all of the books as a child and Dorothy was a little girl- the illustrations in the early books and the descriptions of her are that of a young child.
I just think Judy Garland was too old.
And I say that loving the film!

You have a point about Judy Garland maybe being a bit old to play the part, they had to bind her on her chest to make her figure appear less womanly. The things that the studios used to do to the actors on their books, back then, were astonishing.

Also whoever cast Brosnan as Ron, the overweight, balding, overbearing Ron in Thursday Murder Club needs a lie down.
Ray Winstone was the man for the job!

Totally agree with this. Pierce Brosnan is a fine actor but I think Ray Winstone would have been better. He's great at characters.

LadyKenya · 07/10/2024 17:01

Sissy Spacek (Carrie)

Robert Powell as Jesus (Jesus of Nazareth)

mambojambodothetango · 07/10/2024 17:14

The cast of Sex Education. All of them. But especially Adam and his Dad.

HideousKinky · 07/10/2024 17:19

Gwyneth Paltrow in both Emma and Shakespeare in Love

PatsyStonesBeehive · 07/10/2024 17:23

Jim Parsons as Sheldon Cooper in The big bang theory. Likewise, the child actor, Iain Armitage who played "Young Sheldon". Both are perfect in the role.

Billy Bob Thornton in Fargo

Ian McKellen in LOTR

BBT was brilliant in Fargo. In contrast Martin Freeman was a lightweight.

Yiayoula · 07/10/2024 17:39

cheesecakewrestler · 07/10/2024 16:52

David Suchet as Poirot

….and also @Matildatoldsuchdreadfullies
for nominating Joan Hickson as Miss Marple.
Worst ever : Nicholas Cage as Captain Antonio Corelli .

I mention this abomination every time there’s a similar thread …

All the cast of High Fidelity. The only book adaptation I’ve ever seen where the film characters were exactly as I’d imagined them.

Fescue · 07/10/2024 18:05

Ralph Fiennes as Amon Goeth

Jeremy Irons in Margin Call

Marlon Brando in Apocalypse Now

Ronnie Barker in every role he has ever played (was that really the same actor?)

Gary Oldman as Dracula

Christoph Waltz as Hans Lander & Melanie Laurent as Shosanna

Olivia Coleman in pretty much every role she has played.
