The casual things that wealthy people take for granted

Inspired by a thread that’s gone totally off topic….where someone suggested a £400 watch was cheap.

What’s the most casual (even accidental) brag you’ve ever heard a wealthy person say?

I can start as I know someone who celebrated a big birthday recently and is an absolutely lovely person but during their party (in the wonderful house) they said “oh! Here comes the string quartet. I had completely forgotten about them!”

So if a £400 watch is a cheap watch, what is a £5 watch?
If your mate scrimped and saved to buy her DP a £400 watch for their special birthday, and was so excited to gift it, would you say to her that it’s a cheap watch?

Disposable

Disposable

You’d say that to your friend who scrimped and saved! Wow! I have no other words…

Im not particularly wealthy but a £400 watch IS cheap.

An expensive watch is well into the thousands (£3k+). £400 is probably just a metal/plastic watch.

Next thing I’m going to hear is that £50 is an expensive hand bag 😂😂😂

Edited

You're considerably wealthier than I am, then.

I'm 35 and half way through a law degree as a single parent. My sister is 45 and in her final year of a science degree. My friend is 42 and just finished a degree and has gone straight into a very well paid job within construction/building surveying (not sure what exactly). It can be done.. although I agree it's much, much harder.

Edited

Is your 45 year old sister also working?
Yes, of course you can do it at 35, but in middle age it becomes very difficult to work full time and study at the same time.

Gwenhwyfar · 06/10/2024 20:44

PinkTonic · 06/10/2024 20:12

I did my masters in my late forties whilst working full time and raising 3 teenagers. It was hard work but I wanted it so I made it work.

Good for you, but many, many people that age just can NOT and it's quite normal.

Ramblomatic · 06/10/2024 20:46

Gwenhwyfar · 06/10/2024 19:50

I understand very well that it's not for telling the time, although I thought they were for showing off rather than 'investment'. Either way, you were wrong when you said you have to pay thousands for a 'good' watch as millions of people wearing normal watches can testify.

I understand very well that it's not for telling the time

So why did you say "I've never paid more than 30 and it tells the time just fine"?

you were wrong when you said you have to pay thousands for a 'good' watch as millions of people wearing normal watches can testify.

You've literally just made a distinction between 'normal' and 'good' 😅

Gwenhwyfar · 06/10/2024 20:50
  1. I understand that the people who buy expensive watches buy them for other reasons, but the point of a watch is still to tell the time. I also think some people buy cars to show off, but the point of a car is still to take you from a to b.
  2. A normal watch is good. If it works and tells the time, it's a good watch.
Ramblomatic · 06/10/2024 20:54

Gwenhwyfar · 06/10/2024 20:02

Not really true.
I did the OU in my twenties. I couldn't return to it now in my late 40s because there's no way I could study and work full time, which goes for a lot of people my age.

You seem keen to project your failings onto others, then act like that's the norm for everyone 🤷🏻‍♂️

The fact that you still can't get your head around the point of spending money on a watch is astounding. Have you bumped your head?

Do you think that people sometimes buy things for pleasure, for themselves and not others?

Driving a nice car is something I really enjoy, it's not for others, it's for me

Yes she works two jobs currently and is also a single parent to two teenagers.
Well I can't comment on that part, although curious to know why you think it's so much easier at 35?

anythinginapinch · 06/10/2024 10:09

Your uncle had a point tho. After a certain level, what DO or should you do with "excess"/"excessive" money?
Give it away? Use it to make more excess money? Yes it's a "nice problem to have" but none the less it remains a problem.

I mean, he’d be welcome to give it to me if he wanted to 😂. TBH, it was more the way he said it, like we’d all do a tinkly laugh and agree with him. When in actual fact we’re all in decent careers and still skint as fuck 🙈. I don’t know what you’d do with a spare 6 figures as I’ve never had that problem, so no one could answer that one.

Oh and now that I think about it, I was already annoyed and he and my aunt were rude to the waiting staff and moaned about the food! And made their usual comments about my brother (the groom) never being at work (he’s in the RAF literally defending the country for them and he works very hard thank you very much!).

Thehonestbadger · 06/10/2024 21:20

About a decade ago whilst dating a very wealthy lad from an indecently wealthy family mostly living in the Bahamas we were at dinner with some of his circle and the conversation very seriously turned to a small island they knew that had just been listed for sale.

him: so are you considering it?
friend: potentially but but you know islands, so impractical, the privacy is great but getting deliveries in is such a nightmare. I rather like the convenience of mainland couriers.

ThisOldThang · 06/10/2024 21:27

@Thehonestbadger

That seems to be an entirely reasonable consideration.

Buy an island in haste and regret it at your leisure.

CrowleyKitten · 06/10/2024 21:46

Manypaws · 06/10/2024 14:32

No one has said that anything under a certain amount is rubbish, some people have argued that a £400 watch isn't expensive for them, that's a huge difference

I wouldn't spend £1500 on a guitar but I don't judge you for you spending your money on that

It was £800 at the time. That's it's current value (like with watches, I suppose, guitars don't really lose value) my point still stands, that, say, a £500 guitar isn't cheap, and a £100 entry level guitar isn't a bad guitar for being cheap.

You’re laughing it that post in your comment, it’s so shockingly insulting. Whatever happened to ‘be kind’?

justasking111 · 06/10/2024 22:04

We all have needs v wants. Some can afford it all. Some baulk at the cost.

For instance the cost of Taylor Swift tickets. The cost of the new iPhone. Both leave me open mouthed.

I remember when everyone raved over the Miele washing machine, the Dyson vacuum cleaner. Better cheaper technology has come along since then.

Betamax v VHS video recorder argument. Look at us now, we can stream on our phone.

Once upon a time we bought a bicycle two wheels and a frame. . Now we wear special clothes and research bikes to death. Part exing them when an improved model comes along.

It's all as batty today as it was back in the 80's

She’s giving her opinion. There isn’t a limit on when sufficient others have expressed a similar opinion as to invalidate further contributions. Don’t act so weirdly patrolling and controlling. Weren’t you also the poster who bosses everyone off another thread to post here instead?

bully tactics!

Are you for real or just spectacularly offensive?

KaleQueen · 06/10/2024 22:32

I’m back just to point something out.

So far, on this thread i started for fun which many have clearly enjoyed reading and contributing to, I (personally) have been called:

Poisonous.
Bossy.
Patrolling.
Controlling.
Hideously judgemental
And just now….accused of using ‘bully tactics’

I can see many other nasty jibes at others too.

Hope you’re proud of yourselves.

PS I am none of those things and none if my posts have been any of those things.

PPS that island post wins 🥇🥇🥇

Glad you're back! asked earlier but appreciate you couldn't read all posts - could you please share the original thread about watches?? I'm looking for some inspiration 😜

TooManyBookcases · 06/10/2024 22:53

Are their some truly awful people in this group
who could not be kind of their life depended
on it?

Tanjamaltija · 07/10/2024 07:08

When we say things as they are, we are bossy. Anyone else doing the same, is assertive. One thing I remember is that after O Levels, we used to go to Valletta, where I lived, and some of the students used to buy snacks and rubbish to show they had the money to do it. Those of us who said we would spoil lunch if we ate anything, sometimes because we didn't have spare money, were laughed at. This is 'being rich' for when we were young - extra money to spend. In any case, I would be sitting down having a hot lunch before they arrived home on the bus, or even if someone picked them up in a car.

smilingeleanor · 07/10/2024 07:52

the watch conversation is pretty pointless - most know you can get a cheap watch for a tenner or thousands and thousands of pounds - same disparity as lots of things like property, wine, jewellery, cars, holidays etc

people then have a bracket they buy in and perceptions of cheap and expensive depend on that. Its not a moral judgement just the bracket they're in

when i started a new job once at a time when money was tight - my boss was confused when I asked about early payment of my expenses. I started mid month so wouldn't get paid them for 6 weeks. Couldn't understand why booking lots of prime time train tickets to london for training courses might be problematic for a lone parent. Lovely man but just didn't get it because company was ultimately paying in the end for the tickets!

I think you're confused here.

Good is not a synonym for expensive. You keep using 'good' when you mean 'expensive'. A £30 watch which tells the time accurately is GOOD. A £40K watch is EXPENSIVE.
