The casual things that wealthy people take for granted

Inspired by a thread that’s gone totally off topic….where someone suggested a £400 watch was cheap.

What’s the most casual (even accidental) brag you’ve ever heard a wealthy person say?

I can start as I know someone who celebrated a big birthday recently and is an absolutely lovely person but during their party (in the wonderful house) they said “oh! Here comes the string quartet. I had completely forgotten about them!”

It's all relative though.

Completely agree. I have relatively few material things. I love music, so I got some Bang & Olufsen headphones. We watch a lot of movies so we have a nice TV

I don’t disagree with this @Ramblomatic. I think there is a difference between paying for excellent quality and splashing out lots of cash just because you can.

Like you we like watching the sort of TV programmes that really need an excellent quality picture so have a decent TV (a Which? best buy). We need a reliable car so we have a reliable brand, The washing machine gave up the ghost recently (we had had it for over 21 years so it wasn’t worth repairing) so I bought a washing machine that was recommended as a best buy from Which?

I also subscribe to the view of buy cheap buy twice, but I have a limit as to what I can afford. Basically, I want value for money – not the cheapest and not the most expensive.

Going back to the watch - £400 is NOT cheap for a watch for most people. It is if you can easily afford a 5 figure sum for a watch but given that there are an awful lot of watches for sale under three figures I wouldn’t class it as cheap. And stating that it is cheap is incredibly tone deaf – and aren’t most watches made from metal?

I'm willing to die 10 times over that a 400 quid watch is a cheap watch 😅 It might not be a cheap product, but it's a cheap watch. Any watch below three figures is tat.

Watches are made from all sorts. Straps can be stainless steel, gold, rubber, leather, croc, plastic. Bezels can be metal, ceramic, plastic. Dial material, clasps, the glass on the front and case back...all of this plays a part in the value/quality. The movement, in particular.

Same as anything really. I have a 'cheap' £100 pair of Sennheiser headphones I use for gaming and DJing at home. Sound comes out of them, cool. But they're cheap and the sound isn't good.

When I want to listen to music properly, I have a pair of B&O that I paid 900 quid for. All sorts of amazing sound tech and noise cancelling in them. And the new version has just been released - £1300...but I can return my current pair at any point in any condition, even not working, and get £400 off.

B&O do this because the materials they use are of such quality that they can be recycled regardless of the condition the product is in.

So again, not a cheap product, but a cheap pair of headphones in relative terms because they've saved me money overall.

@Bellyblueboy It's the world where most people live.

The average in household spends £160 a month on recreation and the entertainment (this includes tv pqfkages).

in the ‘real world’ there will be households above this and households below this.

while of course £40 for a night out would be unaffordable for some people and not proritised by others that level of expenditure is not so beyond the means of the average person that the real world comment is warranted.

Um ok 🤷‍♀️

So - she’s a fantastic example of a wealthy person who takes it for granted that she can pay hundreds for an opera ticket, then also takes it for granted that if she can’t be bothered going (regularly does this as per the initial post) it doesn’t even matter to her. That money down the drain. She doesn’t bat an eyelid.

£400 is very cheap compared to your expensive watch brands 1000 to 50000. I have never spent more than 100 and have really stylish timex or casios.
Most wealthy peeps I know almost never flaunt it. The people who flaunt it are the ones who have no concept of value and have come into cash quickly or just a smokescreen to show off to others.

Manypaws · 06/10/2024 17:36

@sabbii define "flaunting"

At the risk of sounding mumsnet, you might want to have a quick glance at the last 500 or so posts (or RTFT as it’s known in these parts) as I think we’ve covered this one off ❤️

She’s giving her opinion. There isn’t a limit on when sufficient others have expressed a similar opinion as to invalidate further contributions. Don’t act so weirdly patrolling and controlling. Weren’t you also the poster who bosses everyone off another thread to post here instead?

Oh I just got it…if you mean pointing out this thread was here incase anyone wanted to look at it…well if that’s bossing and controlling then yep that’s me.

i think I’ll leave it here now. I started this as a bit of fun but as usual the toxicity has taken over and that last comment just finished me off to be honest. What a miserable bunch some of you are. Big love to the ones who got it though and offered some gems 🤩💫 off to Google how much it might cost me for an entry-level pony ❤️

It’s really not that helpful to tell people after they have posted that you think they need not have bothered with their post. You seemed keen to encourage this particular discussion so just let pp contribute 🤷🏻‍♀️

You should get some salt and vinegar for that chip on your shoulder 😅

Nepotism will always exists, and some people will always be able to blag their way through life, but this is the minority.

I've never hired someone unintelligent for a high paying job, or given someone a promotion because of the way they look. Unless you're a model/TV presenter etc, this is fantasy land.

What I have come across is a lifetime of people stuck in dead end/entry level jobs who weren't willing or able to put the work in, who spend their time moaning about their face not fitting, or that everyone promoted ahead of them is a kiss-arse.

I remember taking an entry level job in my early 20s. Was promoted to department manager after three months. The person who trained me kicked off because they'd "been there for five years".

Yes love, you've been in an entry level job for five years...that's a you problem.

There was no resentment in my post. It was merely an observation.

PepaWepa · 06/10/2024 18:55

friendlycat · 06/10/2024 16:07

Well said.

Whilst I will acknowledge that some people don't have the best start in life and may come from a background where education and advancement is not encouraged which may then lead them into low paid work. There are others who work their way up the ladder and put in a serious amount of hard graft to get there.

There are also jobs that are not rewarded very well for the level of care and commitment given.

But up thread there was somebody arguing that a consultant surgeon should not be financially rewarded more than the hospital cleaner. Utter madness!

In this day and age though, anyone can get an education at any age.

Once you've bought the ticket it doesn't matter if you go or not. The money has been spent.

You know nothing about this person - e.g. whether they have a medical condition that flares up or if they suffer from fatigue. Even if they just decide that they don't feel like going tonight, so what?

I think you're being horrendously judgemental.

AndThereSheGoes · 06/10/2024 19:11

@ThisOldThang It doesn't matter in Monterey terms but it matters in terms of being a shared experience. I've been to important sports matches and blocks if seats are missing because they've been booked fir hospitality that didn't materialise. The seats
,whether opera or rugby should be filled by people that want to see it.
Just relist the tickets.

ThisOldThang · 06/10/2024 19:38

There's a difference between corporate hospitality where everything is provided as a freebie to staff, who might not even care about the event, and somebody buying a ticket and then deciding on the day that they aren't attending.

It really doesn't impact anybody else, so what's the problem?

TooManyBookcases · 06/10/2024 19:46

smithsgj · 06/10/2024 17:23

Exactly. A watch is just a thing for people too lazy to take their phone out of their pocket. That's seriously lazy

What if I don’t have pockets?

Ramblomatic · 06/10/2024 13:26

What a weird thing to 'LMFAO' at...

You don't understand that people who pay hundreds/thousands for a watch aren't doing so to tell the time, so you 'laugh your fucking ass off' about it?

Stay broke, as the kids say 🤷🏻‍♂️

I understand very well that it's not for telling the time, although I thought they were for showing off rather than 'investment'. Either way, you were wrong when you said you have to pay thousands for a 'good' watch as millions of people wearing normal watches can testify.

Not really true.
I did the OU in my twenties. I couldn't return to it now in my late 40s because there's no way I could study and work full time, which goes for a lot of people my age.

I'm 35 and half way through a law degree as a single parent. My sister is 45 and in her final year of a science degree. My friend is 42 and just finished a degree and has gone straight into a very well paid job within construction/building surveying (not sure what exactly). It can be done.. although I agree it's much, much harder.

I did my masters in my late forties whilst working full time and raising 3 teenagers. It was hard work but I wanted it so I made it work.

PeachyPeachTrees · 06/10/2024 20:17

Being poor is expensive. My friend couldn't afford to fix her car (£250) and then it broke down and she had to pay for towing, extra fixing cost as car had got worse and missed work with no car. She's a cleaner and only gets paid if she turns up. Ended up costing her double.

If your mate scrimped and saved to buy her DP a £400 watch for their special birthday, and was so excited to gift it, would you say to her that it’s a cheap watch?
