What would your dream house include?

In the absence of staff, an emancipated but diligent house elf, giant leap forwards in robotic technology, mine would be a side entrance into a boot room which massive abouts of spaces for sports shoe & bag storage and underfloor heating so that kit abandoned on the floor magically dries. Importantly, this would be a separate entrance to the front door so that you're not constantly risking breaking your neck or apologising to visitors,
delivery drivers etc for the dump that is your entrance hall. The fact that the gorgeously proportioned entrance hall was one of the selling points and the beautiful tiles extortionate makes this situation particularly galling!

I'd like the house my paternal grandparents lived in. It wasn't fancy - Victorian three bed semi - but it was practical. There was a fireplace in each living room and the bedrooms. There were two brick outhouses in the garden and one had a well in it. There was a good sized cellar. A garden big enough to grow both flowers and vegetables but not too big to be difficult to care for. The hallway had those red and cream tiles on the floor, so easy to keep clean. The one thing missing was a back porch that could be used as a boot room, but I'd add that on. Nice area, plenty of green spaces, but close to amenities. I remember it all so clearly and would love to live there.

A laundry room! Don't like having a drying rack in my living room and the tumble dryer in the shed.

Notellinganyone · 29/09/2024 14:01

Lots of Built in bookshelves, cornicing, original shutters and floorboards, original tiles, claw foot bath, railings, steps up to front door, fanlight, walled garden with hidden swimming pool. Fireplaces in every room.

Buffypaws · 29/09/2024 14:04

interesting how many of us want laundry rooms
I have a feeling the mansnet version of this list is more keen on a games room

IntheVicinity · 29/09/2024 14:06

I quite fancy Nick and Melissa’s house from Conversations With Friends (though I gather the interiors were purpose-built on a set, not an actual house.)

LeavesOnTrees · 29/09/2024 14:08

Absolutely to an upstairs laundry room.
A wide enough garage with electric door to easily get the car in and out.
A cosy reading room / library, this room could also have a piano in it, with tall windows overlooking the garden.

A garden with a massive pond, lots of trees and secret wooded areas.

Extremely well insulated with solar panels so no worries about heating.

Outdoor eating area.

Love the orangery idea.
A swimming pool only if there was some sort of maintenance contract included. I have a friend who has an outdoor pool and it's a bit of a pain.

I remember reading the wife of an American t.v. mogul had a gift wrapping room in their mansion.

In that vein I would have a travel packing room, somewhere to keep the suitcases permanently and not have to hoik them out of the loft every time.
A great big worktop for folding and putting the clothes into piles, and some of the folding stools for suitcases that the hotels have.

Candy Spelling had the wrapping room and it's my 'when I have a mansion' house goal!

Butler's pantry

Laundry room with access to outside

Dining room with a table that seats 20. Must have units with an under counter fridge and wine fridge.

Kitchen with big island, sink and oven will be separate. Free standing fridge with water and ice. Booth seat for cosy dinner. Opens up to outside dining area. Massive shed for sorting furniture.

Bathroom just for me with a Japanese soaking tub and separate, power shower enclosure. There will be other bathrooms. This will be mine.

Paved patio outdoor space and landscapes gardens

Garden room for reading in. Mini kitchen, bathroom. Oh wants a pub, maybe this could double up?

TV room with a space for a projector

Principle bedroom with ensuite downstairs for visitors.

Grandad flat for my pops

Two reception rooms, one with log burner

Big hall with space for a Christmas tree and seating.

Parquet floor throughout the downstairs.

Principle bedroom upstairs with seating area, TV, dressing room then bathroom. Not a fan of ensuite bathrooms. I need a room in the middle.

Indoor swimming pool, with seating area. Shower/ changing room.

Forestcantrun · 29/09/2024 14:20

I think about this often.

I absolutely love our current house but if I could have it….

a cliff house with triple glazing
a pontoon so my dog and I could get into the sea or even a wee private beach
an outdoor hot tub with sea views
an annexe with a warm shower for my dog and some kind of underfloor heating so he’s toasty when we come in
an open fire with a massive fireplace so I could have a garland of all garlands at Christmas
One of those Qwooker taps in the kitchen
lot of stone tiles, wooden beams and a giant fridge freezer.

Forestcantrun · 29/09/2024 14:21

And a little pantry to keep lots of stuff off the counter in the main kitchen

MargaretThursday · 29/09/2024 14:23

If I could totally build from scratch:

  1. An entrance hall with a huge staircase coming down and splitting into two at the top.
  2. A library
  3. A craft room
  4. Separate computer rooms away from the main part of the house
  5. Long thin garden (and gardener!), split into sections, ending in a wooded area with heaps of bluebells and a wishing well
  6. Utility room with washing machine and lots of space to hang washing
  7. A huge loft split into storage space and a space with a model railway and dolls house (although maybe the latter could be in the garden as a model village)
  8. A "moat" with bridge round the house
  9. A tower with spiral staircases and round rooms.
  10. A secret room that no one else knows exists.

Anyone who would like to fund/build this for me, I'm happy to oblige. Wink

A front door in the middle, chimneys at each end, window seats, a swing seat hanging from a willow in the garden. A snug/library with comfy chairs, a roaring fire and loads of book shelves. A utility room, a boot room (can be the same room), a craft room (could be the library), a sweeping staircase, a kitchen with enough space for a rocking chair. Views over open countryside.

Load of storage so I hide all the bloody junk that is the bane of life.

My grandparents lived in a cottage like this (apart from the grand staircase). There is even a well in the garden surrounded by rose bushes 😩 and their willow tree was my little hiding spot!

YellowphantGrey · 29/09/2024 14:43

A utility room with two washing machines and a tumble dryer and in the room, a heated floor to ceiling cupboard with hanging rails. On another wall, a row of laundry baskets. I'd also like it upstairs.

A room with a garden view that has double opening doors and the room has a big comfy chair and shelving to accommodate all my books, records and jigsaws

I sometimes draw my fantasy house floor plans, ready for when I win the lottery 😂

mnahmnah · 29/09/2024 09:27

A swimming pool. Indoor. With a sauna and jacuzzi too. Basically my own spa!

Plus a huge fancy laundry room.

Yep. But the swimming pool must be really warm, like a bath

How lovely, I'm very jealous, it sounds idyllic. 🏡

Giggorata · 29/09/2024 15:04

Woodland, stream and stone circle outdoors. Turf labyrinth, lots of shrubs and flowers. A (real) spring that cascades from a stone face. A walled garden.
A bigger library, two stories or more, with ornate spiral staircase and gallery/ies, fireplace and false door that is also a bookcase, leading to… somewhere.
All windows stained glass.
Extensive cellars, with vaulted ceilings.
Large galleried landing, and wide ornate stairs, all panelled.
Large ornate cast iron radiators, fuelled by a mighty boiler. Wood burning stoves and oil.
Larger kitchen, larger pantry, larger utility/boot room.
Probably the same number of bedrooms, but a bigger dressing room.
Another bathroom, in steampunk style, with lots of brass, copper and wood. A huge copper bath, Ridiculously spiralling pipe work with excessively detailed taps.
Staff.

Lulu1919 · 29/09/2024 15:30

Dream home would include

Three car garage
Workshop for husband
Boot room
Larder
Utility room
Big bathrooms
Kitchen with a family / sofa area

muddyford · 29/09/2024 15:38

A large boot room with load of hooks for outdoor coats and masses of cupboard space. Enough space for dog beds. It should have direct access to outside with a warm tap and hose to wash dogs, preferably undercover.

DuesToTheDirt · 29/09/2024 18:11

We stayed in a holiday home once which you entered through a kind of conservatory, in which there was a massive boot rack, plenty of coat space, and places to sit down and get your muddy boots on or off. Bliss!

StiggyZardust · 29/09/2024 18:18

Something similar to our house but I would like all the rooms to be bigger. I'd like a kitchen big enough to have room for a sofa. I'd also like an en suite bathroom and an office.
All of the above with loads of space round the house, a stream at the bottom of the garden and a shop and pub within walking distance.

BobbyBiscuits · 29/09/2024 18:25

One where I don't have to pay utilities. Lol.
Lots of natural light. Big rooms, high ceilings.
Big garden, terrace.
Really lovely big kitchen. Cleaner that comes in daily.
One bathroom per person plus guest bathroom. but no stud walls with en suites so noises and smells have to be completely isolated into the bathroom in which they occur. And out a window.
A lift in the house if it's got more than a dozen stairs.
Needs to be within 2 minutes of a decent shops that sells food/booze etc at a reasonable price.
No horrible noisy neighbours.
No far right supporters or racists.
Insulation or space sufficient so neighbours can play music/vice versa without disturbing eachother.
Mixed area with both private and social housing and lots of different ages, jobs, nationalities who all get along well.

DuesToTheDirt · 29/09/2024 19:30

@BobbyBiscuits you don't want much! Grin

Goody2ShoesAndTheFilthyBeast · 29/09/2024 19:31

Big heated indoor pool and a huge crafting room.

And my own bedroom with ensuite and dressing room.

StarieNight · 29/09/2024 20:59

Yes a boot room as well and a large square entrance hall with space for coats and umbrellas.
Yy to a shower and stuff also.
Also a beautiful looking laundry room, washer, seperate dryer, hanging things.

StarieNight · 29/09/2024 21:01

Oh and a veranda, a beautiful veranda
