She was extraordinary. I loved her in 'The Lady in the Van'.

RosaMoline · 27/09/2024 14:51

RIP.
So many wonderful performances - The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie, Sister Act, Downton Abbey, Evil Under the Sun, The Lady in the Van..
Bette and Maggie were fab in Death on the Nile:

How very sad. 💐

Dweetfidilove · 27/09/2024 14:53

RIP Dame Maggie 😢

CarterBeatsTheDevil · 27/09/2024 14:54

Oh no! She was such a wonderful actress. I know it's ridiculous to say it's a shock at 89 but it is.

Jackiebrambles · 27/09/2024 14:56

Oh my word what a shame, this has got to me. She was such a fantastic actress, wonderful Dame Maggie, RIP.

RafaFan · 27/09/2024 14:56

A life well lived!

CarterBeatsTheDevil · 27/09/2024 14:56

I saw her opposite Richard E Grant in "The Importance of Being Earnest" at Drury Lane about 30 years ago and she was, obviously, sublime.

NewMe2024 · 27/09/2024 14:58

Ugh, that one hits me hard. What a wonderful woman. She will be missed.

DoorOpening · 27/09/2024 14:58

Oh, I’m so sad! Charlotte Bartlett - so so beautifully acted in room with a view. The last scene when she is turning off her light having read the letter - acting so wonderful, so deft and sympathetic

GiveMeSpanakopita · 27/09/2024 15:01

Aw. 89 is a jolly good innings but still sad. She was brill in Harry Potter. So many great British actors of a certain vintage in that franchise. I was sad when Robbie Coltrane, Alan Rickman and Michael Gambon died too. A true generation of British greats passed over.

Magnoliasunrise · 27/09/2024 15:03

Really sad news, one of my favourites. RIP Dame Maggie.

Such sad news. She was a wonderful actress. I've loved her since the first time I saw The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie.

Gairls, you are the crem de la crem.

Oh yes! This.

And so many other moments. I shall miss her.

Thank you for everything, Dame Maggie.

Threewheeler1 · 27/09/2024 15:05

Loved her in the Marigold Hotel films too.
This is sad but, crikey, what a legacy she's left.
I felt like this when Hilary Mantel died, a bit 'no, please don't go, we're not ready...' 🙁

Cynic17 · 27/09/2024 15:05

One of the all-time greats. I wish I had seen her on stage, but her TV and film work was remarkable. So witty in real life too, I think.
This news makes me feel surprisingly emotional, tbh.

sugarapplelane · 27/09/2024 15:06

I’ve shed a few tears over this.
She was an incredible actress. One of the greats.
As someone else has already said - one that you thought would go on forever 😢

Threewheeler1 · 27/09/2024 15:20

I'm going to watch Room With A View tonight ❤
Wee tribute to a legend

Elderflower14 · 27/09/2024 15:22

Very very sad... Don't think I've ever seen her in something I didn't enjoy... 😔 😔

Drinkdrinkduuurink · 27/09/2024 15:24

Incredible career/longevity. RIP Maggie.

ThisHangryPinkBalonz · 27/09/2024 15:24

Aww no, i thought she was fantastic.

Sheknowsaboutme · 27/09/2024 15:27

So very sad.

so many one liners in Downton.

my favourite is “what is a weekend?”😂

Aquarius1234 · 27/09/2024 15:31

When I first heard it on radio before the full name was said, I thought nooo not Dame Judi Dench.
But either way still a surprise, I have just seen more films/tv with Dench in.

BluesBrotherz · 27/09/2024 15:32

Nooooooooo 😢

GameOfJones · 27/09/2024 15:34

I got a lump in my throat when I saw the headline. She was utterly amazing. DDs love her in the Harry Potter films (as do I!) I think I may rewatch Downton Abbey as she had such wit.
