Could you do Race Across the World?

I have just watched last night’s episode and thought with all the waiting around, bus journeys, heat, lack of proper food, little money, stress of racing, no proper rest/sleep I don’t think I could do it.

I love seeing all the different countries and locations they visit but I could only do that if I was younger, say early 20s, I could have coped with the discomfort then maybe but not any more!

This celebrity series seems more set up than ever. There has been some weird things where I'm suspicious that they're not all taking part concurrently. Also it seems like they only have a night in a hotel at checkpoints but I think it is three days. Some of the comments they make don't make sense. I'm still enjoying it though. I'd struggle with the food and loos.

DancingPhantomsOnTheTerrace · 12/09/2024 17:52

No, I'm terrible at sleeping on transport, and I am pathetically useless when I've not had enough sleep.

No. I’d be murderous.

This was my first thought when I saw the question! I'm definitely not suited to this kind of thing. 🤣

God no. I could get lost in a field 😂

jay55 · 12/09/2024 17:54

I traveled through central and South America mostly by bus in my 20s. So I could do it. I have no urge to do that sort of travel again though.

CarmelaBrunella · 12/09/2024 17:20

How old is your Dad?

He’s older but pretty darn spritely. I’ve seen folks his age on there before.

RaininSummer · 12/09/2024 18:15

In my 20s definitely would have been up for it. Bit like my interailing trip. No way now I am in my 60s. I wouldn't be able to move after 6 hours on coach let alone 10 or more and would probably get cystitis on 2nd day.

thoroughlypickled · 12/09/2024 18:17

I think I could do it with my 26 yr old son. He's travelled loads independently and is very calm in a crisis!

GenerousGardener · 12/09/2024 18:50

Discussed this with my best friend. We both agreed that if we did RATW we would have blown the budget on top notch hotels and taxis on the first leg!

Jeff and Freddie to win.

rightoguvnor · 12/09/2024 18:59

I'd happily do it if only I could go on my own.
DH - gluten free and germ avoidant, too fussy about toilets
DSis1 - germ avoidant, everyone's a criminal, too fussy about food
DSis2 - never been abroad in her life, abroad is scary
DD - too bossy
DS - can't even...
BFF - scared of everything and everyone. Confused by life.

TheGoddessMinerva · 12/09/2024 19:04

I'd love to do it with my friend. We have discussed it. We've been interrailing before, and travelled all over the place. Food allergies and loos are the only thing holding us back.

Weiredeout · 12/09/2024 19:07

I could. But, i cant run fast or uphills.
My advantage would be i dont get hungry so could survi e with minimal spend on food. Though am picky so would probably struggle in several countries.

Also i wouldnt hitchhike so the canada one would be pointless.
Wouldnt take dp as he wouod eat the whole budget.

tealpassat · 12/09/2024 19:08

I could minus the TV crew watching my greasy hair and fat bum.

Babyboomtastic · 12/09/2024 19:12

The TV one - no, it would annoy me too much

A real one, without the blatant restrictions they have, requirement to work in the places they set out, with actual freedom - absolutely!

Chewbecca · 12/09/2024 19:14

I would absolutely love to do it but unsure if I could physically coz of arthritis, I couldn't carry the bag and couldn't run at the end (but I guess that's optional).
I wouldn't want to do it with DH (sorry DH), he catastrophises too much, though he is great at carrying my bags!
Maybe a (good) friend. Or DS (20) who I think would probably regularly have kittens but he is logical and good company.

ItsVeryHyacinthBucket · 12/09/2024 19:17

Yes, 100%. This is what backpacking is. In the early 2000s we had no phones or credit cards, only travellers cheques in USD to convert into local currency. We had pre booked flights into one city and out of another 5 countries away. It was wonderful and we plan to do it again when we can - probably short bursts when kids are mid-teens and older and then a longer trip (year+) in retirement.

lissie123 · 12/09/2024 19:18

no not without the full support of a medical crew and translator. I’ve travelled a lot but sleeping in cockroach infested beds and 14 hour bus journeys are something I’m not prepared to put up with now. Dd whose 22 has done it recently and I have many moons ago but I’m too spoilt now

AyrshireTryer · 12/09/2024 19:19

Would love it, trying to get DP to do it as they were after people who are deaf, but he clearly thinks I am mad.

CrushingOnRubies · 12/09/2024 19:20

I could do it if it was with my dp and maybe my dad. Not if it was my mum.

I would love to do it

rainsofcastamere · 12/09/2024 19:21

Me and my husband have spoke about this so many times! Yes, we could do it but the military precision that my husband would undertake would send me into such an anxiety that I'd be a nervous wreck! If not for that then I'd love to!

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 12/09/2024 19:22

I reckon I could. Plenty of things I wouldn't / couldn't (strictly, I'm a celeb, Love Island...) but I like the idea of this one.

GameOfJones · 12/09/2024 19:24

I would absolutely love to do it and DH and I say to one another that we'll apply in a few years once the kids are older if it's still going.

My only worry would be the toilet situations but I still think it would be an amazing experience.

SerenityNowInsanityLater · 12/09/2024 19:25

Not with my prolapsed EVERYTHING! Nope.

Wait? Do they hitchhike in Canada? That’s crazy! Have they not listened to every single true crime podcast about hitchhikers in Canada? Because I have.

Olika · 12/09/2024 19:27

No, I am not patient enough.

Emeralpies · 12/09/2024 19:32

I'd have done it like a shot in my teens, twenties and thirties. Now in my fifties I couldn't. I'd be too anxious about dodgy tummies, full bladder and bed bugs!
