Could you do Race Across the World?

Probablywont · 12/09/2024 17:00

I have just watched last night’s episode and thought with all the waiting around, bus journeys, heat, lack of proper food, little money, stress of racing, no proper rest/sleep I don’t think I could do it.

I love seeing all the different countries and locations they visit but I could only do that if I was younger, say early 20s, I could have coped with the discomfort then maybe but not any more!

We are removing this while we do some checks behind the scenes.

No would worried about lack of toilets and getting a funny tummy

StarSlinger · 12/09/2024 17:10

I think it would be an amazing adventure. I'd like the planning because I love maps, but I'd be far too knackered after an all night bus journey to function the next day.

Yes, would be brilliant. Honestly considering applying if still going when I retire

Grecianrainbow · 12/09/2024 17:12

I like the idea but with a few tweaks - a bit more money for nicer places to stay, and access to technology to book journeys.

The travelling for a holiday with a vague plan of where I’m going sounds fun though.

the tv version not so much

Youmwarayoum · 12/09/2024 17:12

I would love to do it! But not knowing what I’m eating and also not having proper toilets would stop me. I’m still scarred after what I saw when using a rest stop in eastern Turkey 20 years ago…

FrenchandSaunders · 12/09/2024 17:12

No! One of my DDs was keen to apply with me and I know id be a miserable old bag without regular food and sleep. And I couldn’t hack a long bus or train journey without my phone for podcasts, music, audiobooks

SoupDragon · 12/09/2024 17:14

Hell no. The toilets on some of those long bus journeys.....! Shudder.

Idratherbepaddleboarding · 12/09/2024 17:14

Nope! DH always says he wants to do it when we watch it but he wouldn’t last 5 minutes 🙈.

JanglingJack · 12/09/2024 17:15

Absolutely. My DD and I want to apply once she's old enough. Currently 15.

ThursdayLastWeek · 12/09/2024 17:17

No. I’d be murderous.

ColonelRhubarbBikini · 12/09/2024 17:17

I’ve always said I think me and DDad would absolutely boss it but in reality I need to wash my hair daily or I’m a miserable bitch and I’d be worried about everyone watching hating me and everywhere I went afterwards I’d be booed like a Panto baddie 😬.

Kendodd · 12/09/2024 17:18

I could! I'd love it.
I've had some really gruelling journeys before and stayed in real shit holes in rough arse parts of the world.

BigDahliaFan · 12/09/2024 17:18

Dh and I discussed it briefly but we both get hangry and probably wouldn't make it past the first lunchtime.

Also discussed with a friend who I did 'chicken bus and hostel' travelling with 30 years ago. We decided we'd rather do it in our own time with more money now!

MouseofCommons · 12/09/2024 17:18

No. My bowels are useless and I can't eat gluten without making them worse. I'd last a morning.
I also can't cope with roughing it.

Not a phone obviously but they can have some tech, I'm sure I watched an episode where one team traded two MP3 players for a taxi journey.

I'd like to think I could do it but in reality the stress and constant adrenaline hits would probably carry me off before the end of the first leg.

Doormatnomore · 12/09/2024 17:19

I’d like to do that cause that’s how all our journeys end up anyway. Our sleeper to London was cancelled due to rain and it was exactly like race across world, expensive taxi, overnight bus and then a smaller local train. We wouldn’t get through though cause we swear so much.

Same, but with my 15 year old DS. I think we'd make an awesome team.
Maybe see you there?!

Oh yes it's definitely staged. I was a bit hmmm that they all arrived at last nights checkpoint within 40 minutes of each other and the 'jobs' are so set up.

Well of course the jobs are set up, they get a little brochure of them to choose from! I think it's just a way of showing the audience different aspects of each country, and adding jeopardy because the work holds their progress back.

CheeseWisely · 12/09/2024 17:36

Thinking about it I once had to start a long haul journey like Race Across the World due to a cancelled flight. I took a bus, an overnight ferry and a coach to reach Gatwick from where I picked up my journey by air. I had a phone to book it all though (and the promise of travel insurance money to pay for it).

Probablywont · 12/09/2024 17:39

Oh yes, the toilets would be a major issue and I don’t know how I would cope with no technology.

OP posts:
RobinEllacotStrike · 12/09/2024 17:41

I probably could do it but I wouldn't want to

It's 95% stress & long haul busses. Boredom & frustration - not a good combo.
