So did I-within seconds. But apparently so did 38% of other people!

Ha, sorry yes. But it makes it easier, so please don't do it if you like a challenge!

So if you click on the lightbulb top right, the Connections companion comes up. The drawing at the start always gives you a hint as to the puzzle. So for example, if you clicked on today's, I am fairly certain you would not have fallen for the red herring. They are always a bit 'esoteric' but they are useful pointers.

If you scroll down, there is also a hint for one word in each category. I don't look at that (because I don't want too many hints!) But I just looked at today's (after I had completed the puzzle) and I guarantee that if you had used that hint you would definitely not have fallen for the red herring!

I'm kind of feeling bad now because I thought the clue was a known thing - it is in the puzzle after all.

So urgh, please don't click on the lightbulb if you don't want help (although really, this goes back to my original point that the NYT should make the puzzle universally solveable WITHIN the puzzle confines itself and not have to give clues*).

Ah well, I guess we all have google, so nothing is really spoiler free.....

(*Edited to add: Only Connect can do this. So it is possible!)

V quick today, nearly fell for the red herring but decided it was too obvious.

Didn’t know there was a picture clue!

@CurlewKate - I’ll look up a word if I have no clue what it means and f I’m desperate I’ll look up hints. I do say here if I do. Sometimes the hints I find on one particular site are not overly helpful and I still don’t get it! I never look at complete answers just a hint. I figure if I can’t get it with a hint then I don’t deserve to get it!

Yellow and green were easy.

Purple and blue contained words which are familiar to me, but not in the contexts here. I guess it must be more American usage.

I use the app on an iPad and don’t have a lightbulb either.

I look at it on an android phone, but not using the app, and I do see a light bulb.

I sometimes look at the picture if I am desperate for a hint, I do google words but rarely use hints (and tend to say here if I do).

Ah interesting. I use the website on phone or laptop, so no app.

I do Connections first then click on the drop down left and do Mini, Strands and Wordle. In that order. Then I can start my day! (It's like my morning coffee 🤪).

Mini is the worst for Americanisms though, so if I've had a tricky Connections I might do Wordle first. (I know how to move my cheese!)

I’m on the website on my iPhone and I don’t see a lightbulb. DH has an Android phone and can see a lightbulb on his.

That there are hints is new information to us!

On the other hand, it did offer me stats for the first time ever. That was kind of neat.
