@MissConductUS ...that beast of a lion is definitely cross at been woken up from it's lovely snooze !

@Deathraystare
Not sure I would class Westfield as a local Mall !!

Been there a few times .
Once even before the shops had open .. ! It still gave me a headache 🤣

Do you get used to the crowds if you know exactly what shops you want to go in ?

DandyDandylion · 31/08/2024 17:22

I buy Christmas presents and birthday presents for my dc, who have December birthdays, all year round. It spreads the cost and you can buy things when you see them rather than in a blind panic. You can also shop all the sales, I love a bargain. I am always surprised when I pull the boxes out from under my bed, that technically contain blankets, at how many things I have forgotten I bought.

I will he chasing ds out the door when he turns 18 to ensure he spends a few years cooking and cleaning for himself before he settles down. I hate the mummies boys who expect a woman to pick up their socks.

My dd will of course live with me always and care for me in my dotage. Except I want grandchildren. Hmmmm 😂

ShoesOnFirstThenCar · 31/08/2024 18:32

Hello everybody, I was on these threads way back in the mists of time but have been following avidly so feel up to date! Some sad losses along the way but also lots of new faces. Loving reading all the updates.
I felt compelled to sign in again after seeing the post from @sproutsandparsnips. That’s my home town! Recognise that lighthouse island anywhere, I’ve moved a teeny bit further west now, but once a Jack always a Jack 😁.

sproutsandparsnips · 31/08/2024 18:43

Fingers crossed for your surgery Penguinsa
Deathraystare I have another drawer of doom containing batteries!
Havoc it is the Bristol Channel taken from a big wheel.
DS's team suffered a heavy defeat against a very strong side but was a good experience.

Penguinsa · 31/08/2024 20:52

Thanks Death Glad you found a nice dress. Sorry about the funeral. Hope the pension increases.

Thanks Havoc He loves being Papa Floof, I just said it was my friends birthday and that I sent him a happy birthday message and Floof started trilling at that so I sang Floof Happy Birthday Papa Floof and he trilled then DH sang it for him. Those brownies sound amazing.

Very organised re Christmas Bizzey and Dandy

Welcome back Shoes

Good the rugby was enjoyable Sprouts

Been gardening with DH and got quite a bit done. I was mainly clearing leaves, we have quite a few trees as do the neighbours. I also put all the cardboard and packaging from the boiler parts in the recycling. DH cut up some branches from a plant he had cut before and did some weeding. I used my garden dustpan and brush and for second time in a row it had been moved from where I left it and DH said he didn't do it, DD doesn't go near garden shed so it must be DS. Maybe he's a secret gardener.

Just had homemade spaghetti bolognese which was nice.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 31/08/2024 22:50

So. 😤 I drove 45 mins in bumper to bumper traffic for an x-ray that was booked for today only to find the office closed for the long weekend. 😤 Why I was given the appt and received a reminder message to attend is beyond me. Ended up at Costco and picked up a few needed items. Just finished lunch and have got Havoc down for a nap. Baby ate chicken, croissant, raspberries and half a plum. I'm nibbling on a brownie. Next time I'll add nuts. I was going to put nuts in these, but wasn't up to chopping.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 31/08/2024 23:04

Sprouts, just looked up Bristol Channel. Gorgeous! 😍
Penguinsa, I think cats are super intelligent.
Bizzey, Dandy very smart to shop as you do.
@ShoesOnFirstThenCar welcome back. Hope you stay. 😊

I can report the brownies are incredibly moist without being goopy. Very close to perfect. I'm willing to put in the effort to work on the recipe, taste test and report back. As always, my door is open if you want to pop by for a snack and coffee. 🥰

HildaTablet · 31/08/2024 23:18

Sorry about your wasted journey, Havoc, how frustrating.

I’m visiting family and spotted a house that’s just had its roof re-thatched, so I took a photo for you. The decorative ridge is a common feature you see around. The other photo is of an older cottage with a roof that’s been in situ for a good few years, and lastly some of the thatch they haven’t swept up from the pavement yet!

Hilda, that's quite gorgeous! Thanks for posting! 😊

Penguinsa · 01/09/2024 00:49

Havoc Sorry about scan.

Hilda Lovely thatched roofs. We also have a decorative ridge on thatch though what I like best are when you see thatched roof animals. Need a thatched Floof.

MissConductUS · 01/09/2024 12:07

Welcome, @ShoesOnFirstThenCar, and thanks for delurking. I wonder if you were posting on this thread a few years ago before curation duties passed to me somehow. You have quite a clever username, which I think I would remember. What I don't recall is how I wound up as the thread mum. 😀

My church is having mass on the grass today as it's the last Sunday of the summer schedule. It's a bit cold and gloomy, and they've scheduled a baptism as well, so I think I'll pass today.

DH and I did some closet cleaning yesterday. Somethings will got to the church clothing festival and some will get binned for being in poor condition.

I'm still processing the fact that DS will be moving out (unless a better job comes along locally in the near future) and have started making a mental list of the furnishings and household goods he'll need to set up his own place in Boston. I doubt he'll live in the city proper though. It's too expensive. He'll need to find a flat in one of the suburbs and commute in. Fortunately they have very good public transit on trains.

Miss I joined about 2 and a half years ago and you were indeed thread mum then (and an excellent job you do too I might add 😊). I had some issues with my log in so gave up and just read all the news. My username was inspired by DD who is 16 but has quite severe special needs and is non verbal, that was the first ‘sentence’ she said. It has now become just “in the car” but that doesn’t have quite the same ring to it imo.
Havoc sorry you had a wasted journey, I hope they can rearrange quickly.
Penguinsa I think having Floof incorporated into the thatch is an inspired idea!

We are having a very lazy day, DD not even dressed yet and DHs bike plans were scuppered by the weather. It is brightening up now so he’s muttering about going later. I might iron a bit…..on the other hand I might just have a cup of tea and an M&S chocolate chip cookie.

Deathraystare · 01/09/2024 14:43

@bizzey
Re: Westfield. I don't tend to go far as cannot do long walks. They have taken away a lot of the seating but as soon as I get in I try to find somewhere. I normally go to M&S for a cuppa and a snack. I used to go around WH Smith, Cos, a few other clothing stores, Waterstones etc. I prefer the Hammersmith Primark so only go to the Westfield one if my friend is with me (I sit down where the shoes are! She takes ages.). Used to like going around John Lewis but cannot face it now.

I still get rather lost there. If I can find M&S and Next I know I am ok!

Dear God I think I need a carer! Got up early as doing the early shift (or so I thought!). As I got off the first bus, I checked what time they wanted me tomorrow and my eyes went to today and it said 2-8!!! Well there is nothing to do that early in the morning, especially on a late opening Sunday, but I had a hot chocolate from the 24 hour shop and sat by the bus station and realised I had better go home! At least I could do some washing at the launderette!!

sproutsandparsnips · 01/09/2024 17:38

Oh dear @Deathraystare! I once went in to work on the wrong day, I should have been in the day before but no one had contacted me when I didn't turn up as they just thought there had been a change, so my arrival the next day was a nice surprise for everyone!
@ShoesOnFirstThenCar we had such a lovely day, though the traffic was so slow going through Swansea I was thinking it was a mistake but glad we persevered. Lunch at Verdis and ice cream, yum!
I would be so annoyed about that @Mumtobabyhavoc.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 01/09/2024 17:53

Welcome Shoes. 😊 I really like that word, scuppered. It's so British! 😄

I was surprisingly calm about the appt issue yesterday. I sent off an email from the car before driving off and headed for Costco. 🤷‍♀️
I do need to add on another xray so I'll ask for that when I re-book and I think I'll just try phoning myself rather than wait for a call back.

I don't think I mentioned that I took Havoc the the bouncy park, Fun Box, again on Friday. It was our third time. This is the last weekend for it. It really is so. Fun. 🤩

Funeral today. Attending via Zoom as it is across country. Hoping dc will be napping so my mum and I can watch.

Lemonsandlemonade · 01/09/2024 19:32

Sorry about your wasted trip Havoc and Hope the funeral went ok.

Made a fish pie for tea. It was tasty to be fair.

Saw a Herron on my walk this evening.

Come and tell me your dull and unexciting news 31: Calmly through the day
Deathraystare · 01/09/2024 19:40

@sproutsandparsnips

What are we like eh?!!

@Lemonsandlemonade Lovely photo of heron.

So many of you on here have children with special needs etc etc I really don't know how you cope, considering that children of all types can be a right handful. I take my hat off to you all.

ShoesOnFirstThenCar · 01/09/2024 19:46

Well spotted Lemons.

Hope the kids managed to nap Havoc, sorry for your loss.

sprouts verdis always worth persevering for! Plus you get a lovely view eating your lunch. I’m a bit in the minority in that I much prefer their ice cream to the much lauded local alternative Joe’s 😮. I whisper that in case they make me hand in my Jack badge 😂

Death it’s bloomin hard work for sure but you rejoice in the teeniest achievement

ShoesOnFirstThenCar · 01/09/2024 19:50

For anyone who might be interested, the reason why people from Swansea are called Jacks. I appreciate that might be a very small number 🤣🤣

Penguinsa · 01/09/2024 19:58

Lovely to see a heron Lemons

Sorry about the funeral Havoc Hope it went as well as it can.

Sorry about wasted journey Death

I hope you get a break sometimes Shoes with a non-verbal autistic child, lovely as they are.

Always good to have a clear out MissC

Went to Houghton Hall today https://www.houghtonhall.com/ in to the house, sculpture garden, deer park and walled garden and to the café. Going to have Sunday lunch this evening. Walled garden was my favourite part.

Houghton Hall & Gardens | Norfolk, England

The Palladian splendour of our historic stately home, award-winning gardens, contemporary art, rolling parkland, and a host of attractions and events make Houghton Hall in North Norfolk a wonderful place to visit.

sproutsandparsnips · 01/09/2024 21:01

I'm also not so fussed on the ice cream beginning with J @ShoesOnFirstThenCar. We have similar in our village in our Italian cafe - it's nice but I prefer the different flavours.
Sorry about funeral, hope was ok @Mumtobabyhavoc..
Lovely heron @Lemonsandlemonade - I always get excited to see one. Saw some bats this evening.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 01/09/2024 21:11

Penguinsa, what a gorgeous estate! I've just looked through the site. Also, very interesting history.

Funeral was short. Very nice photo montage shown and nice remarks by a family member. Widow is holding an open house with dinner so I imagine people will open up and share stories then.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 01/09/2024 21:18

Sprouts. Bats freak me out! Have seen them here only a couple of times and not since I was a kid, but saw lots at dusk/just after dusk in Las Vegas out in the desert and also in Australia.

HildaTablet · 01/09/2024 21:32

We have bats flittering round our house in the summer evenings (outside, I mean, obviously!). We think they’re pipistrelles - the most common bat in the UK. Tiny little things, small enough to fit into a matchbox. No idea where they nest but they might well be roosting in the attic of our house, as they can get in through the tiniest space. We like to see them zooming about, though.

Bats are very highly protected here. You can’t disturb their roosts or harm them in any way.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 01/09/2024 23:06

Hilda, I believe in Aus and maybe USA, too. I remember reading how important they are to the ecosystem. Still freak me out. As do moths. 😳
