Some on here already noted that the Best for Britain tactical voting recommodation for Scotland is off.

https://x.com/edwinhayward/status/1802820834446225697

There have been quite a few criticisms of @bestforbritain and the tactical voting guide they launched today, not least from me.

(Long tweet out of necessity. Sorry.)

Their attitude towards the SNP feels particularly problematic (see screenshot below) and they have recommended Labour over the SNP in almost all Labour/SNP two-way contests.

They have also made a few recommendations in England that, to my casual eye, look to favour Labour over the LibDems more than they should.

Over the years, they have taken £1,438,500 in donations from just 11 donors, and a further £136,831.60 from smaller donors in transactions too small to be recorded individually.

If you want to find out more about who funds the organisation, you can download a list of donors from the Electoral Commission at the link below:
https://search.electoralcommission.org.uk/Search/Donations?currentPage=1&rows=10&query=best%20for%20britain%20limited&sort=AcceptedDate&order=desc&tab=1&et=pp&et=ppm&et=tp&et=perpar&et=rd&isIrishSourceYes=true&isIrishSourceNo=true&prePoll=false&postPoll=true&register=gb&register=ni&register=none&optCols=Register&optCols=CampaigningName&optCols=AccountingUnitsAsCentralParty&optCols=IsSponsorship&optCols=IsIrishSource&optCols=RegulatedDoneeType&optCols=CompanyRegistrationNumber&optCols=Postcode&optCols=NatureOfDonation&optCols=PurposeOfVisit&optCols=DonationAction&optCols=ReportedDate&optCols=IsReportedPrePoll&optCols=ReportingPeriodName&optCols=IsBequest&optCols=IsAggregation…

It is worth noting that they have in turn donated £229,922.29 total over a number of installments to Hilary Benn, as well as £2,000 to the Green Party, and £2,000 to Peter Kyle.

You can see those donations in the transaction list at the link below:
https://search.electoralcommission.org.uk/Search/Donations?currentPage=4&rows=10&query=best%20for%20britain&sort=RegulatedEntityName&order=asc&tab=1&et=pp&et=ppm&et=tp&et=perpar&et=rd&isIrishSourceYes=true&isIrishSourceNo=true&prePoll=false&postPoll=true&register=gb&register=ni&register=none&optCols=Register&optCols=CampaigningName&optCols=AccountingUnitsAsCentralParty&optCols=IsSponsorship&optCols=IsIrishSource&optCols=RegulatedDoneeType&optCols=CompanyRegistrationNumber&optCols=Postcode&optCols=NatureOfDonation&optCols=PurposeOfVisit&optCols=DonationAction&optCols=ReportedDate&optCols=IsReportedPrePoll&optCols=ReportingPeriodName&optCols=IsBequest&optCols=IsAggregation…

Anyway, I will leave it up to others if you want to look into the background of Best for Britain. I am merely providing information to help kickstart your investigation, should you be so inclined.

Maybe a better way of doing HoL (with the award winners being given to interior designers for eg) is to change the awards to a stricter system of Value to Public or Services to Public or similar. If they get top tier they can be allowed to vote but the rest have to come in to listen and debate only. Of course if they want a "better" grade they can damn well do something to serve the public and upgrade.

SerendipityJane · 18/06/2024 10:16

fabio12 · 18/06/2024 10:08

Lady Hale though...
Weirdly I was trying to explain HoL to dd over the weekend and she said we should be voting for them too @SerendipityJane but she wanted PR and a choice of over 5 for each constituency that would be revisited every 4 years in line with the GE. I did point out that a lot of people wouldn't have voted for some of the better Lords and Ladies in there (such as Hale) in favour of protest votes like the Reform lot, disruptors that could potentially endanger the system rather than support it in a meaningful way (thinking MEPs).

Was an odd chat on a car journey with a 12yo!

Edited

My proposal would automatically bring in the minority as the upper chamber. No separate election (and therefore another chance to piss in the pool of democracy needed)

In addition, candidates standing for election couldn't be sure if they go to the commons or lords. Which would spike the guns of the parachuted candidates.

Or just introduce sortition and have an incorruptible system. See who squeals first, as they will be the enemies of democracy.

Just having a public nomination and voting scheme would be a start. Term limits too.

Alexandra2001 · 18/06/2024 10:22

Naval gazing.... Labour need to improve peoples lives.

HoLs reform is not a priority, tbh it was the only opposition to many of Sunaks more extreme policies, very little meaningful objections in the 'commons.

Farage, is aiming at the next GE not this one, if Labour fail, a far right party will take over, probably some sort of frankenstein Tory/Reform organisation.

Cheguevarahamster · 18/06/2024 10:27

I think there should be a mix of selection and election in HOL. There should be a skills audit and comprehensive selection criteria (not HOLAC -which is toothless) and appointments made on that basis.

fabio12 · 18/06/2024 10:29

@Alexandra2001 I do agree, not a priority.
I think it is hard to discuss a lot of the Labour policies as sadly they feel thin on the ground (likely a personal opinion as I prefer Libs as I've said) but I can understand people becoming worried about that. Reform are certainly on the ballsy end of demands, which I do think a large section of the public are keen to hear after so much left unsaid from the top 2 parties.

SerendipityJane · 18/06/2024 09:43

I’m quite worried about myself because I watched Newsnight’s coverage of Reform and a couple of their ideas on the NHS are decent.

If you read the 1932 National socialist manifesto, it seemed reasonable and had some good ideas. However, the "burn down your house in case of fleas" part less so.

I really don't give a shit about "a good policy". If you realise as you cast your vote that you are between Wayne with the swastika tattoos and Gary who is positively slavering with "send them home" as you enter the polling booth then you really, really, really, really really should not ever ever ever ever find yourself voting for the same thing they are. And if this seems illiberal and illogical then so be it. But as the meme that I have seen recently (thank goodness) so succinctly puts it:

My grandfather fought fascists, he didn't vote for them

I know. You’re preaching to the choir. I did say I was worried about myself. 🤷‍♀️

Notonthestairs · 18/06/2024 10:47

It's not ballsy to come up with an impractical unworkable Christmas List you know won't ever need to enacted.

I appreciate people might want fantasy (don't we all) but we've had a recent dose of fantasy economics and look where that took us.

If the Conservatives weren't running so bloody scared they'd stick the boot in. As it is they've led their voters down the garden path and pushed them in front of Farage.

Agree. And with PR for the elected part.

RafaistheKingofClay · 18/06/2024 11:05

Re: reform and the NHS. Farage has been quite open about the fact that he wants a US style insurance based system to replace the NHS. I wouldn’t let him anywhere near it whatever he puts in his manifesto.

MissMarplesNiece · 18/06/2024 11:55

Notonthestairs · 17/06/2024 23:01

"Are they really going to vote for a party that threatens to take away their benefits?"

That assumes people are paying close attention to detail - & it requires the media to hammer that point home.

I think people are exhausted and busy.

Agreeing with @Notonthestairs

I'm in a Facebook group for people who have to take a particular medication. The medication would be very expensive to buy privately. I noticed that one of the members of the group has changed his avatar (is that what we still call them) to a "Vote Reform" badge. I very much wanted to ask him how, if Farage has his way over the NHS, he will afford to buy the meds he needs and afford to pay for all the subsequent medical treatment that this condition often requires. Sadly the Facebook group admin has banned political posts so I can't ask him the question.

"BREAKING: 80,534 people have registered to vote today, and it's not even 10am yet.

We are on course to break the record for the highest number of voter registrations in a single day. I'm so proud to be leading the #GiveAnX team 🗳️"

👏👏👏This is very heartening.

@DuncinToffee that is so upsetting to read, even more to know that it's probably happening in other places! I work with people with LDs and am shocked that there are still places behaving like this.

Yes, I think people think politics won't impact them.
Which is weird because simultaneously they think it will impact others.

Hopefully the perpetrators will be prosecuted. Scum.

It is sadly far from uncommon for people to view disabled people as less than human. You only have to read some of the disability benefits threads on MN.

As a parent of a child with severe LD's this terrifies me. Those poor children and families.

But where were ofsted in this - the BBC can't launch an investigation into every school. Whatever protections they had in place it wasn't enough.

Saucery · 18/06/2024 12:26

Precisely @Notonthestairs . The BBC didn't just randomly decide to investigate that school. For it to be on their radar concerns must have been existing and ignored by official bodies.
