Was v surprised.
He's a bit of a nob but I thought they looked like a happy couple

It's very challenging for any marriage when one partner gets a lot of health issues, and the other is left carrying the load. Especially if the unwell person doesn't have much grace or humour...

TomatoSandwiches · 25/05/2024 14:54

Good for her. He has been an absolutely awful husband to Ruth for years and years, doesn't deserve to be looked after by her now.

the80sweregreat · 25/05/2024 14:55

Ruth always came across as someone's mum
Nice and smiley and would make you a cup of tea whilst handing you a Kleenex if you were upset. She seems a lot more relatable.
Eamon would tell you to get a grip and man up

Maybe she missed the "In sickness and in health" bit. I don't like him but I find her very irritating as well.

So he’s not 100 per cent and they’re getting divorced. Ive not been able to stand the sight of her since she totally embarrassed herself on Strictly. 🤢

PuppyMonkey · 25/05/2024 15:04

Was watching her on QVC earlier (don’t judge me, I like it on in the background Grin) and she couldn’t have looked happier tbh.

the80sweregreat · 25/05/2024 15:06

What did Ruth do on strictly ?
I can't remember her being that bad tbh.
Not Ann Widdicombe bad at any rate or Jeremy vine terrible !

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 25/05/2024 15:09

Perhaps the love had died and the thought of being his carer spurred her into action. I wouldn’t want to care long term for someone I was no longer in love with.

bluetopazlove · 25/05/2024 15:10

Well I'm not surprised , I'm only surprised it's taken this long . 💐

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 25/05/2024 15:12

Oh goodness, I'm surprised.

Sillystrumpet · 25/05/2024 15:17

I suspect it became ver difficult living together with his pain and health issues. A friend of mine had something similar and I can honestly say it became abusive and controlling, the way she shouted at her husband , she was just so so angry all the time. It was awful to watch. She was in pain all the time, but he took years of extreme abuse. If it’s similar then I can see why she’s out.

karottybagel · 25/05/2024 15:27

No one knows why. It's unfair to assume It's down to his health. Their child has grown up and left home now presumably, a lot of people find themselves divorcing at this stage.

IIRC she banged on non stop about being menopausal and sweating then she laid on top of Anton on the floor.

TorturedPoets24 · 25/05/2024 15:33

I thought she acted very irritated with him since he became unwell.

Maybe he was very irritating?

MsLuxLisbon · 25/05/2024 15:38

Mumsnet double standards strong on this thread. If a man left a sick wife, everyone would be saying what an unfeeling bastard he was and citing it as evidence of how selfish men are. I'm not saying that Ruth is a bad person for not sticking around, and in fact it might not be anything to do with his illness at all. I am just somewhat amused (although not surprised) by the difference in attitude on here between when a man does something and when a woman does the exact same thing.

Well maybe he was irritating. You don’t know what goes on behind closed doors.

Twolittleloves · 25/05/2024 15:39

Good. His misogynistic comments towards her about her weight etc on This Morning were shocking.I always thought it was sad how she just laughed it off...glad she has finally seen the light and got rid of him.

the80sweregreat · 25/05/2024 15:43

Definitely double standards re men v women.
I do agree if it was a man divorcing his poorly wife there would be calls for his head on a stick , his probably got a new ( read younger ) woman and all sorts.
His rich enough to employ a carer and maybe he was unhappy in the marriage too, but we do think differently depending on the sex of the person doing the divorcing. It's just how it is :(

TorturedPoets24 · 25/05/2024 15:44

Yes he was very irritating! They did present themselves as very happy and loving and the bickering was generally good-natured I thought.

CwmYoy · 25/05/2024 15:47

He's an Irish catholic - his wife wouldn't move to England when his career took off. I always thought he'd end up back in NI with her.

BananaLambo · 25/05/2024 15:54

He used to be ok but then at some point he just became an awful, grumpy, sarcastic, human being. And then he showed up on GBNews and I thought ‘that’s who you are. Someone who punches down’.

TheDogIsInCharge · 25/05/2024 15:54

Janjk · 25/05/2024 14:35

I worked with him years ago. He was really nice. It's all about family for him though and I can imagine him going back to NI now that he has grandchildren. Sad that they've split up and I was really surprised.

Gosh, I worked with him years ago and he really wasn't nice. Once refused to come out of the car to have lunch with the crew before a shoot. Just sat in his taxi, boosting the waiting time costs and when he came on set he was an absolute misery. All five of the other presenters on the same shoot weren't above eating with the crew if they arrived early. Mind you, he was usually very late.

He also slated a fair few of my mates in his book, mates who had the patient of a saint with him on so many occasions. He rarely did any prep and thought he knew it all. He was nice waaaaaaay back in the day for a while but he turned into such a cantankerous arse.

AramintaTittington · 25/05/2024 16:03

Just to add a little balance about EH, I met him at a police awards do.

He was so nice! Genuinely interested in talking to everyone and hearing their stories, just a nice chap who was very humble and in awe of the stories he was hearing

He's quite 'abrasive' to watch on tv though! But in person - he was perfectly pleasant and engaging

deeagwitch · 25/05/2024 16:05

Did he and Ruth have an affair or had he already left his first wife when their relationship began ?

Arconialiving · 25/05/2024 16:15

I'm sad to read this - obviously if they're both happy then fair enough but otherwise I always find it sad when marriages split. Hope they're both ok.
