Came out of nowhere but music planning for friends wedding and Pachabels canon in d came up, and this then brought up Maroon 5 Memories (via Spotify) as chords are replicated so One Voice Children's Choir Covid song came up and showed the isolation we all went through,.my dc was 2 at that point and the song a bit cheesily brings back so many memories of the madness went through!

I can't make you Love Me, the George Michael version. I can't listen to it without bawling - even more so since he passed!

whatthematters · 22/05/2024 21:52

Do you realise? Flaming Lips

Yellowaveo59 · 22/05/2024 21:57

Hold on by Wilson Phillips. Heard it on the radio one day and knew I’d never meet the baby I was carrying. Miscarried a week later.

augustusglupe · 22/05/2024 21:57

Have I told you lately , played at my brothers funeral.

Johnny and Mary, by Robert palmer. My brother was a big fan and that song gets me.

The way we were, the Gladys knight version.

Someone said ‘White Horses’, it reminds me of being little, with no worries and long carefree summers.

Joshua kadison-picture postcards from LA
it's about a young lady who is a waitress, but is told from the point of view of the piano player
She has big dreams of making it in LA,he tells her to go for it and 'send me a picture postcard from LA'
She books her ticket every week, but something stops her everytime and 'still no picture postcard from LA'
It gets me everytime-never give up and never let go like 'rachel' does
I named ds Joshua as I love that song so much

Hallelujah by leonard cohen-it was played at my darling fils funeral
It hits me everytime that he's gone-ill never blush over something he's said or hear his laughter again

My grandad used to sing a song about a mermaid, sat on a rock and brushing her hair
I cannot remember it at all and that hurts so much-its like I've lost a link between us

It's a long shot but did the lyrics involve the mermaid having a comb and glass in her hand? If so, it may be an old folk song - https://mainlynorfolk.info/martin.carthy/songs/themermaid.html

The Mermaid / The Sailor’s Song / Our Gallant Ship (Roud 124; Child 289; G/D 1:27)

Hope There's Someone by Antony & The Johnson's. Such a weird weird song but also beautifully haunting.

Gosh yes that one is intense and beautiful

EndlessWashingUp · 22/05/2024 22:25

A Winters Tale by David Essex. I had a traumatic relationship break up just before Xmas years ago and ever since, it's always takes me right back any time I hear it.

Love the orchestration and especially the oboe part.

Meet Me On The Ledge, Fairport Convention. Not a band I'm normally into, but came across it on a compilation.

Go to fairport conventions cropredy festival. The band organise it and they play on the Saturday night and we all sing Meet me on the Ledge before leaving,

It's honestly a fab 3 days, really chilled, one stage on a south facing slope.

Loads of songs make me emotional. Landslide by Stevie Nicks springs to mind atm

ColinRobinsonsFart · 22/05/2024 23:02

First time ever I saw your face - this was our first dance at our wedding.

Then 15 yrs later DH was fighting for his life in icu after major surgery leaving him with sepsis and a stoma. I was sat in the kitchen alone and this came on the radio ..... the floodgates opened

Music when the lights go out by The Libertines. I heard it a lot whilst going through a divorce, and always makes me sad when I hear it

Oh gosh. It’s such a break up song isn’t it.

Two odd ones for you - they drive me bananas!

Edelweiss in Sound of Music. Knowing what evil tragedy is waiting sweeps over me every time.

Silent Night - I can never hear it without crying. I almost hate Christmas because of it. On top of the natural beauty of the hymn, the story of young soldiers from opposing sides singing it together in WW1/11 before going back to the trenches to kill each other devastates me.

me too for both!

eidelweiss because we sang it at guides. Then there was a dreadful accident and a few of our guides and leaders died. I also sung it to my son as it would put him to sleep each night.

and silent night is just so beautiful. Last Christmas I couldn’t stop crying thinking of all the horror at the birthplace of Jesus: and of all the mothers with their babies

Lovetok · 22/05/2024 23:14

Wings by Little Mix - something about the harmonies and the lyrics in the chorus get me every time.

Fizbosshoes · 22/05/2024 23:26

Snow patrol -chasing cars
Years ago Jeremy Vine interviewed mothers whose young sons had died at war. Each mum chose their sons favourite song or a song that reminded them, and that was one of them. Now it gets me and i think of the mum and son every time I hear it.

Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas. "Through the years we all will be together, if the fates allow..." and the wishful refrain of "next year all our troubles will be miles away". Just a very emotive song at a very emotive time of year!

Same here but only the Judy Garland version. Sets me off every time and I don't even like Christmas 🤣

Luddite26 · 22/05/2024 23:38

@Fizbosshoes I remember listening to that programme it was so very sad. Not long after we were at an abbey listening to a choir by candlelight and they sang it so beautifully dh and I were a wreck

My husband's son took his own life a few years ago and when we went to get the Xmas tree and put the decorations on we had random music playing and a song we hadn't really took any notice of came on and it hit us both together. We had to stop and have a hug and a big cry. It was Coldplay Christmas Lights and it seems to come on now at poignant times. We always joke that ds would say why are you upset over this song I couldn't stand Coldplay?

methodbehindmymadness · 22/05/2024 23:39

where have all the flowers gone
slipping through my fingers

DrCoconut · 22/05/2024 23:41

It's not a crying type song but street of dreams by rainbow is very emotional. Although it's not supposed to be about bereavement it kind of fits.

Upwiththisiwillnotput · 22/05/2024 23:43

Oh, so many.
DD is a massive KPop fan, when she left for uni Dymamite by BTS was everywhere. It was like having a little bit of her back (she is back now)!!
Forever Autumn by Justin Hayward reminds me of DS leaving home at16. He is also back!
Baby I love you by The Ramones was mine and DHs wedding song- been married 20 years and still gets me ❤️

laddersandsnakes12 · 22/05/2024 23:56

So so many! The one that used to do it every single time was Running Up That Hill by Kate Bush but then Stranger Things happened and it was played SO much that a lot of the impact that song had on me lessened.
the songs that gets me the most is I Do This All The Time by Self Esteem - the lyrics "I'll take care, I'll read again, I'll sing again" just reminds me of how I felt when depressed and didn't want to partake in any hobbies or look after myself. So I always have a sob at that one because I did get better and do all those things again.
Others are Die Hard by Kendrick Lamar, Don't Wish Me Well by Solange, Sandcastles by Beyoncé, and 505 by Arctic Monkeys. They all get me right in the feels!

Origamiheaven · 22/05/2024 23:58

Landslide by Fleetwood Mac

Slightlydustcovered · 23/05/2024 00:01

Oddest one, Surface Pressure by Jessica Darrow
Really touched a nerve!

Moveoverdarlin · 23/05/2024 00:03

The Streets of London - Ralph McTell. I remember singing it in primary school, sat cross legged on the cold floor and the lyrics were just so emotive. I must have only been about 9.

Holding Back The Years - Simply Red. They used it in an Episode of OFAH, when Rodney got married. It moved me to tears.

It’s Sad to Belong to Someone Else - England Dan and John Ford Coley. If you have ‘the one that got away’ it will really strike a chord.

Moveoverdarlin · 23/05/2024 00:05

Against All Odds - Phil Collins. It’s just a proper love song. Reminds me someone I’ll never get over.

the2andahalfmillion · 23/05/2024 00:08

How can you all narrow it down to one or two? I'd be here all bloody night😂
