Do men have these kind of threads?!

Probably full of ways to ensure you always have a bottle opener to hand or easiest ways to bulk buy socks online... or ensure someone else does the washing up Grin

Not really - DPs would probably include a portable jump starter and electric tyre pump for cars, Amazon Prime membership, buying 5 identical shirts at once, using an ironing service, bulk buying pet food and taking your partner a cup of tea in the morning to ensure a less stressful start to the day (nearly 25 years of experience has made him pretty reliable about the last!)

I suspect it would all be tips on strategic incompetence in order to get "her indoors" to do everything for them............. although mine has learned that it doesn't work (and that I need a cup of coffee in bed in the morning!)

Checking in and following with interest!

Thanks @listsandbudgets for the new thread.

I bulk buy tinned tomatoes, tinned pulses, bags of pasta, tuna and olive oil on Amazon, plus loo roll (Serious Tissues) and kitchen roll. I subscribe to Smol dishwasher tablets (best ever) and buy concentrated surface cleaner. Makes my shop a lot lighter to have these things delivered and they're cheaper too.

I make a lot of bechamel based sauces (and custard) with UHT milk in litre cartons. You can bulk buy it, you don't have to buy extra fresh milk for macaroni cheese, and it's room temp so easier to mix in/warm up.

I have two…

Not sure if these have already been mentioned but tumble drier balls! My mum got me some and I rolled my eyes as she has a bad Amazon habit, but they are absolutely brilliant. They are wool type balls which absorb a lot of the moisture and bash everything gently back into shape. Excellent.

Also, if anyone is in the market for a new vacuum for wooden floors, I can recommend the Dyson with a laser beam (!) it’s amazing! I thought my floors were pretty clean but nope! When you vacuum with this you can literally see paths of dust you are hoovering through, so satisfying.

Oh my, I too have the Dyson cordless hard floor attachment with the green laser beam. Omg I was gobsmacked, and still am, every time I vacuum what looks like clean hard floor, nope it is not clean! We have a dog, and the hairs that are illuminated after even one day, it's incredible. I would never be without this now, and very satisfying when it glows clear!

Moremorela · 24/02/2024 07:41

Stop diverts getting befuddled..
2 bits of elastic. Lay inside out duvet cover on top of duvet. Tie top left corner of duvet to top left corner of cover. Elastic tightens and keeps it tied, but easy to loosen. Repeat on right side. Easier to shake out in the morning.
ive tried sewing ribbons etc but elastic works best.
WHY do they never put the duvet size on the sodding labels? Color coding duvets to a bed is a great idea pp! I’ve gone down the sharpie route.
also keep the bedding in the room rather than the linen cupboard.

this thread reminds me of viz top tips 😀

ILoveNigelTufnel · 24/02/2024 08:04

I use those massive bags to store summer / winter clothes (whichever opposite season it is obvs!). I don’t have space in the wardrobe to hang everything up at the same time so these are great. Each different thing stored has a different design so I know which bag is which - clothes and shoes, duvet and spare pillows etc. and then they can be stacked in the spare bedroom wardrobe.

A niche trick, but if your kids have jigsaws of the sort that come 4 different puzzles in a box, then once you have done each jigsaw, mark back of each piece of that puzzle with a colour.
So if your kids are like mine and hurl them all back in the same box when they’re finished, it’s easy next time round to separate them out again.

I put them in sandwich bags as well!

Just thinking about stuff I do that’s made my rather unorganised / last minute / flying by the seat of my pants OR hyper focused mind (probably ADHD - not being flippant but I’ve not been assessed yet)…
I bought a sellotape dispenser - can’t lose the tape now AND it’s so much easier wrapping presents.
I write birthdays and ages on the calendar AND when I need to post things or give them to people.
For my gorgeous old cat (the late great Posey) I used to count how many tablets she had and write on the calendar when they would run out. I would also write when I needed to phone the vets to get the new ones ordered. We never ran out!
I still use a paper calendar and write everything on it - so much easier to see the month.
AND my attempt at being a real, live proper adult… batch cooking (done it for years) BUT now I label it all - portion size, when it was made and (this has been a game changer) I write what the meal is! No more stewed apple defrosted instead of chicken casserole 😃 the plastic takeaway containers with lids have been brilliant for this.

These have probably all been said but I’m still proud of myself!

The Lakeland plastic zippered
Laundry holders for bras and delicates. So brilliant to be able to put these in a gentle wash.

Except that they get lost in the house!

Three season duvet - game changer

I use the laundry holders. They’re great. But I just stick bras in a regular wash so long as they’re in the bag.

I hope to achieve this level of organisation one day 🤞

I really struggle with just keeping on top of life so this has been a concerted effort. I have a lot more work to do to get my house how I would like it to be and to be a more organised person. It’s only in the last year I’ve really started to do this. I hate disorganisation and being last minute but I also struggle with just not staring in to the abyss / feeling overwhelmed. I find it really hard!

I totally understand. It has only taken me until three years ago to use a calendar and record all birthdays/events. I used to forget and post cards at the last minute 🙈

Countrylife2002 · 24/02/2024 11:29

I organise my wheelie bins so the one to go out next is at the front. No more having to go and look at what everyone else has done

Countrylife2002 · 24/02/2024 11:33

Also, hang bird feeders from trees with a carabiner clip. They never get blown off the .

PollyOrange · 24/02/2024 13:19

@MarvellousMidgeMaisel do you have a description or link please for the balls? I just used tennis balls for my duvet but they went all weird !

Cluelessness · 24/02/2024 15:18

i am probably a bit too organised…

Batch food prep for slow cooker-
use plastic zip lock bag, add tins of tomatoes, prechopped frozen onions/garlic/carrots/peas/sweetcorn/mushrooms etc, add meat eg minced beef, add herbs/spices. I make up bolognaise, stroganoff, curry’s, Thai, stews etc
Label and lie flat in freezer.

Write meals prepped next to the calendar and take out of freezer what I fancy the next day, leave to defrost over night and pop into slow cooker on low in the morning. Just need to cook cous cous/pasta/rice.

Batch cook and freeze lunches/snacks eg cheese scones, soups, homemade chicken nuggets/sausage rolls.

Buy/make naans, wraps, rolls, sliced bread and put baking paper between each piece & freeze.

Use small Kilner jars, fill with yogurt, oats, frozen fruit, toasted nuts, dried fruit, seeds etc. Make 3 days worth ahead & pop in fridge for breakfast/snacks/pudding.

Wash chop & pop into Tupperware (I use glass ikea containers) cucumber, carrots, tomatoes etc so always ready for snacks, lunch, to go with salad leaves.
Do the same with fresh fruit like kiwi, grapes, oranges, melons.

Have a list of all food items in stuck inside larder door and use it to meal plan. All tins facing out and packets go stood up in old ice cream tubs each one labelled eg pulses/rices/nuts/sauces etc.

A crocheted bag for packets of crisps and another for chocolate bars, that I refill once a month when do big Lidl shop. Once gone they’re gone!

Dry clothes on hangers so minimal ironing time. (I like clothes to looked ironed!)

Add a clean dry towel to damp items if using tumble dryer. Sometimes I part dry clothes/towels in tumble dryer then hang out.

Family style calendar so everyone has their own box and the end box is for whole family eg someone’s birthday/insurance renewal/requires whole family attendance. I also block occasional weekends out so we spend time together else it’s easy for us not to have chill time together.

Box of tissues in lounge, kitchen, each bedroom beside bed. Bin/bleach in each bathroom & a little wash bag with a spare hand soap (collect from
hotels), sanitary ware, hand cream, wet wipes. Flannel on side of each sink so everyone can wipe it after use.

Each child has a rucksack just for school/nursery. End of each half term we go thru and replace what’s broken/lost/run out from the spares I hide in my office. I always buy stationery in bulk! They also have a fun rucksack each which they use for swimming, clubs, sleepovers. This gets emptied after each use & put in bottom of wardrobe. Each child has their own washbag of shampoo/conditioner/comb/soap/flannel that they then chuck into the fun rucksack when needed.

We all have our own coloured packing cubes. Eg mine pink, DH grey, etc. When packing we share our luggage across all cases just incase anyone’s case gets lost!

Have folder of photos of passports, insurance, travel details, medical info on each phone.

I have a running list of what to pack for different holidays on my phone eg self catering, weekend city/country, camping.

i have similar lists for birthday/xmas. I have a ‘gift box’ so that when I spot a good/cheap item for someone it goes in the box and on my list. Sometimes I buy more of the item and will give to various people eg M&S are doing perfume tester sets at £5 each. I bought 4 to go to various friends at Xmas.

I make cards with the DC during crafting sessions and save in blank envelopes ready for birthdays of friends/family.

use Alexa for shopping lists and everyone knows to add it to Alexa when getting low.

plastic tray by ikea for shoes by front door, back door and boot of car for shoes/wellies. Waterproofs & wellies are kept in boot of family car. Each car has a bag filled with wet wipes, muslin cloth, plastic ikea bags, box of tissues, nappies, sweets, hand sanitizer, pen, lip balm, change of clothes for baby, spare socks for everyone.

I could go on….!! 😳🙈😂

Don’t know if this counts but I taught my 2 and 3 yo the “trick” to put their own coats on (where they flip it over their head) and they’re so excited to do it, I don’t get any coat arguments now.

Had to google this to see what the "trick" was. Genius.
Off to try it out on my toddler who normally refuses coats even in a blizzard

Luhou · 24/02/2024 17:42

I keep a "pack" for my baby. It has change of clothes, nappy, wipes, bib in. I take it to bed at night for the night shift and then re-fill. Makes it easy to grab if you're heading out the door etc. Always have one ready.

I always put my pegs in a tote bag, that I then put over my head. Means pegs are always to hand.

I have only 1 laundry basket. It gets filled with dirty washing, then clean. This means I have to put the clean wahsing away to make space for the dirty to go in. Otherwise, I would leave full baskets of clean washing and not put them away.

I try to stick to list of daily jobs. Helps keep me ontop of things.

The coat trick works really well. I also have heard the one for shoes. Take a big sticker and cut it in half, then place one side in each shoe, so that the picture is recreated again when the shoes are the right way around.

BigbigFreezer · 24/02/2024 18:08

I’ve just purchased two family size Pyrex dishes with the plastic lids.

my plan is to make meals in them and freeze them but then I’m going to pop them out of the dishes and put in zippy bags and stack them.

the idea being I will slip a meal back into the dish to thaw (with the lid on) in the morning and pop into the oven for dinner when I get home.

(can’t remember if I said this one, all my plastic ‘Tupperware’ is stored with its lid on, no searching for lids anymore, doesn’t take up much space, everything I didn’t have a top or bottom got put in garage for a month and then went in the recycling bin if it’s mate didn’t appear). I keep labels and pen (and small scissors) in with my plastic boxes too as no one but me uses that cupboard. )

Not rocket science but we get our dog’s food delivered from Tails.com…I just don’t have to think about it, we never run out, it just turns up at the appropriate time
