Your Mandela Effect moment

StockpotSoup · 18/02/2024 12:38

I posted about mine on here a while back… it was about two celebrities that I distinctly remembered were supposed to have dated, but there’s literally nothing about in online, and no one here remembered either (and even found proof that one half of the supposed couple was married to someone else at the time!)

Have you had a Mandela Effect moment? And, when you realised you’d misremembered something, how did you react? My instinct was to look for logic explanations (e.g. I’d misunderstood a denial of a rumoured relationship). However, when I look at these things online, I’m amazed by how many people will accept literally any other explanation than “I was wrong”.

One that particularly fascinates me is around a film called Shazam. Countless people claim they can remember it, that they used to watch it all the time when they were kids… yet it doesn’t exist. When you read into it, it actually becomes quite obvious how it happened: there was a film called Kazaam that came out around the same time with the exact plot they describe, and Sinbad - the actor/comedian they believe starred as a genie in Shazam - starred in a series of TV ads as a genie around the same time. Yet thousands utterly refuse to believe that there’s no such film.

Anyone got any good examples?

Walkers cheese & onion and salt & vinegar swapping colours in the 90s

Richard E Grant and Hugh Grant being brothers

I'm sure there are more

Richard E. Grant isn't even his real name.

His real name is Richard G. Esterhuysen.
The G is for Grant, his middle name.

When he came to the UK to be an active, he switched his middle and surnames to sound more English.

There is a film out at the moment about flaming hot cheetos. I'm sure it was released 5 or 6 years ago and thought I could remember the promo cycle as well with Eva Longoria directing yet it's only just come our!

Didn’t I read somewhere it was a different company that had the reversed colours? Not sure.

Golden Wonder crisps which were big in the 70s and 80s had the opposite colours - salt and vinegar was blue, cheese and onion was green.

My two - one, in the mid 60s I roller skated. I wanted for my birthday some 'skeelers'. The were - what we now call in line skates. I got the idea from a comic with a story each week about Shiela Skeeler. No one ever heard of them until a guy actually found an article about them.
I was vindicated!

Second not so lucky, tv programme , early 70s? A bit like the tomorrow people (but not) and one character was female, in a wheelchair (very much before its time) and she had a Labrador dog.

Never found what it was ☹️

Porfirio · 18/02/2024 17:28

Jumanji, the film. I have a vivid memory of watching this with one ex and I can picture him talking about it quite vividly to his aunt and uncle, except that we had split up eight years earlier and I was with someone else and I cannot in any shape or form picture watching it or talking about it with him!

I remember that too as clear as day.

Luddite26 · 18/02/2024 17:32

😂 and so it goes and so it goes.....

Porfirio · 18/02/2024 17:33

I only recently solved one mystery.

I remember the year 1989 and a Blondie song being played continuously and years later I was convinced, utterly convinced that it was Maria.

However, Maria wasn't released until 1999.

For years I couldn't work it out and trawled through Blondies songs.

Then a YouTube song popped up and it was 'I want than man' by Deborah Harry and was a solo effort by her, hence my not finding it when I searched under Blondie!

D'uh!

AutumnCrow · 18/02/2024 17:33

I swear, if anyone else mentions fucking crisps ...

WE KNOW! WE KNOW EVERYTHING x50 AND MORE AND ALL THE REST AND ALL THE DIFFERENT MAKERS AND COLOURS. WE KNOW!!

Trinity65 · 18/02/2024 17:34

I always always thought that David Walliam's was David Williams

I am certain that was his name once.
😆

You are correct but I am not sure if they were Walkers

I do remember old Golden Wonder or Smith's crisps being green for Cheese and Onion and blue for Salt and Vinegar
70s to 90s

Don’t waste your breath, no one ever bloody listens to this.

Those of us who were about in the 70s remember what actually happened but no one listens.

The kids 80s tv show Dungeons and Dragons. I have a very specific memory of an episode where the kids (who were sent through a portal to another world whilst on a fairground ride) somehow got home. They later discover that another set of kids go on the same ride and disappear through the portal. The original group decide the second group will never survive in the other world and go back to help them. They end up sending the second group of kids back but get stuck there after the portal closes forever.

Given every episode was about the kids trying to get home, this was especially traumatic to eight year old me. Me and my brother went to school the next day and all the kids were talking about it.

As an adult, one night I was talking to DH about it and he didn’t remember that episode. We went down a rabbit hole looking for it and ended up reading descriptions of every single episode ever made and couldn’t find it 🤷🏻‍♀️

I 100% remember that too 😱

Please tell me you are trying to wind me up.

THEY DIDN’T SWAP. THE DOMINANT BRAND OF CRISP CHANGED TO WALKERS WHICH WAS THE ONLY BRAND WITH BLUE FOR CHEESE AND ONION.

I think this happened too! We can't both misremember the same thing?

Sharontheodopolodous · 18/02/2024 17:42

Years ago,I fell pregnant with my last baby

I went through the pregnancy and she was the only one that went over my due date

Gave birth,brought her home etc

She would have been about 18 months when her big brother mentioned to her that 'nanna brought you here'

I asked him what he meant and he was convinced my mother had got her from somewhere, wrapped her up,brought her to me and asked if I wanted her (in fairness, she did do this a lot with random things but more like a job lot of super noodles or loo roll-not a baby!)

I'd said yes,so my mother handed her over and left-he could tell me what was on the tv,what we where wearing, where he was sitting and the blanket she was wrapped up in

He had no memory of me being pregnant nor bringing her home-he was adamant and got very upset when I said he'd got it wrong

Oddly he remembered his little brother being brought home but not his sister

He finally accepted I'd carried her, gave birth to her and nanna hadn't just brought her round a few years later but still swears blind, almost 15 years later, that he can remember that day as clearly as he did at the time

Very odd

The weirdest one for me is that Danielle Steele is actually called Danielle Steel. It's very strange.

What's weird about that.

candgen625 · 18/02/2024 17:42

EdithGrantham · 18/02/2024 16:35

I was convinced (and still am tbh) that the Vicar of Dibley ended with Geraldine leaving her post for whatever reason and the other characters are all standing around in the church hall discussing that she'll be missed and wondering who the next vicar will be. David says something along the lines of "Well, whoever it is it won't shock us more than having a woman!" The scene cuts to a outside where a car pulls up outside the vicarage and a black vicar gets out. Cue much of-its-time laughter from the studio audience. But when I've googled no such scene seems to exist in the main series or any of the specials.

Omg I remember that

milesmachine · 18/02/2024 17:44

Is 'IT WAS A DIFFERENT CRISP BRAND THAT WAS GREEN FOR CHEESE AND ONION'

The new 'cancel the cheque'?

AllPlayedOut · 18/02/2024 17:45

I think this happened too! We can't both misremember the same thing?

Yes you can. It’s an extremely common misconception. One of the most common. There’s been numerous threads on it.

This is a common one. It was Walkers who switched the colours. So before Walkers Cheese & Onion were always green & Salt & Vinegar always blue.
