Your Mandela Effect moment

I posted about mine on here a while back… it was about two celebrities that I distinctly remembered were supposed to have dated, but there’s literally nothing about in online, and no one here remembered either (and even found proof that one half of the supposed couple was married to someone else at the time!)

Have you had a Mandela Effect moment? And, when you realised you’d misremembered something, how did you react? My instinct was to look for logic explanations (e.g. I’d misunderstood a denial of a rumoured relationship). However, when I look at these things online, I’m amazed by how many people will accept literally any other explanation than “I was wrong”.

One that particularly fascinates me is around a film called Shazam. Countless people claim they can remember it, that they used to watch it all the time when they were kids… yet it doesn’t exist. When you read into it, it actually becomes quite obvious how it happened: there was a film called Kazaam that came out around the same time with the exact plot they describe, and Sinbad - the actor/comedian they believe starred as a genie in Shazam - starred in a series of TV ads as a genie around the same time. Yet thousands utterly refuse to believe that there’s no such film.

Anyone got any good examples?

I was absolutely convinced that Mother Teresa had died years before she did. I really clearly remembered lots of tribute programmes and things on the news. I think she must have had a landmark birthday or been given an award or something, and been on telly for that reason, and my childhood brain had assumed she'd died because she was elderly.

I also vividly remember the Herald of Free Enterprise going down, but I was only two. I remember watching it on Newsround with Krishnan Guru-Murthy. That clearly never happened because Mrishnan didn't start at Newsround until 1991, but I remember it so clearly!

I believe a number of people could not place Mother Teresa's death because it was six days after Princess Diana's. Most other news got crowded out by the latter and I thought for many years later that Mother Teresa was still alive. Different end of the scale to yours of course.

marshmallowburn · 18/02/2024 22:58

Still not convinced about the Berenstein bears. Though I checked my three copies of old books a few years ago and annoyingly they were BerenstAin. Still don't buy it 😆

And the number of people who don’t believe the two were so close together always amazes me.

I remember actor Tim Curry dying. I remember there being posts on fb, it being reported in the news and then various films and shows he had been in being shown following this. I remember a friend posting something about it on her status on fb. Turns out none of this happened. I know he has had ill health but he is still very much alive. I remember a male news reader - saying actor Tim Curry has died aged x. I can remember being sad about this as I like him a lot.

@NorthCliffs Dolly's braces is the only one I've ever experienced and it bothers me so much. I remember being quite freaked out by her mouth full of metal as a child.

Without the braces the whole romance doesn't make any sense!!

Wtf.

Exactly! Initially she was a potential victim in his eyes, but when she shows her own metal-clad teeth she became a potential mate. It really makes no sense otherwise.

‘Sweet dreams are made of these’ makes no sense - why would you think it was that?

Possibly the way she pronounces "this" as "thee-is"...Lennox herself said many thought she was saying "cheese" (which tbh is wild)

I always thought it was "this" but i've got other song lyrics mixed up.

I could have sworn he was too. GLad he's alive!

It's "in which we're living" which makes perfect sense.

There’s actually famously some controversy about whether it is “in which we live in” (have seen lots of discussion about it!) for example:
https://www.grammarphobia.com/blog/2010/12/lyric.html

However, if the point you are trying to make is that all song lyrics always make perfect sense grammatically or otherwise… erm, yeah, sure.

Sheet music usually renders it 'in which we live in':

Annie Lennox sings ' thees' for ' this' in There must be an angel playing with my heart , as well. I think it's her accent.

In the film Moonraker, the baddie, Jaws bumps into the be-spectacled, pony-tailed, gingham-clad tiny blonde character, Dolly. He smiles, showing her his terrifying metal teeth, and she smiles back, showing him her braces (unlikely romance ensues). I have a memory of it clear as day. Except it's not in the film, and there are no deleted scenes to back it up. I will go to my grave believing it happened.

I remember this too...I have it on video I might dig it out to check

But that is virtually the definition of the Mandela Effect! A multitude of people believing something happened when it didn’t!

The comment about But that is virtually the definition of the Mandela Effect! A multitude of people believing something happened when it didn’t! is referring to the crisp colours that have dominated the thread, not the Fruit of the Loom thing that your links are about.

The end of the movie 14 going on 30 has the older woman walking into the classroom as a teenager. It was released at a similar time to Big.

It's 13 going on 30, the ending is a flash forward of her life with mark ruffalo and it came out about 20 years after Big!

I think you’re thinking of “Keeping the Dream Alive” by Freheit:

Thanks, it could have been 🤔 but the illogical side of my brain still thinks its East 17 (and mere facts will not persuade it otherwise 😂)

Ithinkitstimeforbed · 18/02/2024 22:03

Yes both of these, I remember floating down the stairs, jumping over the banisters and jumping from the middle of the stairs. I’ve sort of rationalised this now I have 2.5 year old- we “fly”
him quite a lot (obv not on the stairs!) and wonder if that’s where we’ve got the sensation from? He gets carried up to bed and down in the mornings, I wonder if those early memories of flying are actually us being carried and we eliminate the adult in the scenario? Having said this my memory of flying down the stairs I’m older, maybe 5/6?

Yeah my memories of it are making a concerted decision to jump down rather than walk/slide and definitely on my own. The most obvious explanation is that it was a dream. Perhaps it is common because it appeals to kids sense of adventure and having superhero powers along with being safer and more attainable than jumping out of a window or flying off a building

Part of me still clings on to it being real because as an adult I am so far away from a "jumping down the stairs" person😂

That’s a different film. 14 going on 30 came out in 1988. 13 going on 30 came out in 2004. The pp was talking about the 1988 one.

tamagotchimustdie · 19/02/2024 13:01

About the Dungeons & Dragons mystery...

I also remember an episode when they got home - and were presented with a dilemma that meant they ended up going back to the magical realm again. It was heartbreaking! Looking at the episode list, I think it did actually happen, in episode 11 of series 1 "The Box". Interestingly, the next episode in the list says that they then have "the help of another group of lost children".

So perhaps people are merging these two episodes in their memory?

@mypafology not 13 going on 30, 14 going on 30. The final scene the boy is in class and a girl walks in and sits down. He looks at her, recognises her. And i think his friend become the 30 year old snd take over teaching the class. It is on youtube.

Could you actually be remembering the sinking of the MS Estonia? That was 1994 and had a similar cause to the Herald of Free Enterprise.
