Who is your favourite Gladiator?

We've been watching this every week with the kids and have been pleasantly surprised that it's something that we're all really enjoying, even our hard to drag away from his computer teen boy sits down willingly.

Our family favourite is definitely Legend, he's hilarious and we all hope that when he's competing that he'll be interviewed at the end. Loved the bit where he complained about the lights being in his eyes when he failed on the Wall.

From the women it's a toss-up between Sabre and Fury. Oh to have the confidence of Sabre! And Fury is just awesome and so fierce.

Viper coz some ones got to be the 'bad guy' and I loved Wolf. And Nitro.

All the women are fantastic, couldn't pick.

But all these Gladiators seem like nice normal people and do get concerned when a contestant gets hurt.

Mumofmarauders · 25/02/2024 13:39

Ahh thanks for the info re getting on the podium for Duel, @noblegiraffe! That was my youngest's theory (I was envisaging like a crane situation lowering them!)

Walkingtheplank · 25/02/2024 13:42

Fury is my favourite, possibly Nitro too.

The Gladiators aren't actually that good. Hopefully they'll get better with experience.

Sherrystrull · 25/02/2024 13:47

@WillimNot

It was atlaspheres! We were talking about it too!

purpleme12 · 25/02/2024 13:47

You don't want them too good though do you
Otherwise the contestants won't win enough

noblegiraffe · 25/02/2024 13:49

Duel seems like the opposite of Gauntlet for the male contenders. No one is going to last more than a few seconds against Giant. For the women it always seems more even.

Legend, Nitro and Viper always make us laugh! I like Fury and Dynamite.

DH and I were the right age to have watched it as kids the first time round, and we were looking forward to it for the nostalgia factor, but our kids (8 and 6) are just loving it too. It's probably the first thing we've genuinely all enjoyed watching together (aside from Bluey!), proper family friendly entertainment and I love how positive and supportive it feels. I've got an 8yo DD and I'm so glad there is something like this on TV at the moment that is popular with some decent female role models and where physical ability and trying your best is really celebrated.

I wonder if some of the games wouldn't pass health and safety now. Didn't Jet fall off the Pyramid and get quite a serious injury?

I would love the game back where they were in the cages that rolled? Was usually the first game of the show in the nineties. Can't for the life of me remember the name of it.

It's good they kept the songs as well, another one bites the dust and the giant fingers. DD wants me to look out for tickets to go and see it live.

Yeah, I think you are probably right.
I'll have to watch the originals again with dd. I think she'll love them.
I just had a quick look on Google and the games like the climbing wall definitely look harder. I think I've forgotten a lot of them as well.

Fizbosshoes · 25/02/2024 14:35

I dont really have a favourite, Legend and Viper play their characters but i think Legend is probably a bit more convincing, Viper just seems to snarl, and is sort of a poundland Wolf. DH likes Sabre and Dynamite.

On some other points - I read recently that Jet (OG gladiators) was paranoid or self conscious about getting a pic or shot at an unflattering angle so that's why she flicked her hair/did a back flip etc and constantly in motion.

I think the Wall is good. I think the men have a bit more chance to get some points as being super muscly and heavy is not always going to be advantageous (although Nitro was v quick yesterday) whereas they are at much more of a disadvantage than the women in virtually every other game.

I think power ball should be 2 glads v 2 competitors. Being against one bloke that's about 6" taller and 8 stone heavier is one thing, trying to escape 2 of them is nigh on impossible!

Why is Legend always on The Edge? Even when he's not posing or doing press ups, he doesn't seem that good?

Do you remember Duel was usually Shadow's event in OG gladiators and I don't think anyone survived!! (I'm pretty sure the same Gladiator battered the hell out of competed against both competitors in the 1990s)
To answer a pp question they had a ladder to get up there it was shown on one of the recent programmes when they got to re-start a game - I can't remember the reason

noblegiraffe · 25/02/2024 14:44

It's really nice reading about all these families sitting to watch it together with their kids. I'm not sure there's been another show like it for years.

Perhaps the timing is just right for it with people who loved it as kids now having kids to watch it with. I know DH and I were very excited for the first episode and our kids were like WTF then they got really into it too.

Very true, DD is 16 and DS 15 and we barely watch TV as a family like when I was a kid.
This has definitely brought us all to sit together and have a laugh

ClaudiaWinklepanda · 25/02/2024 16:46

Ninja Warrior and The Titan Games are similar (but less camp Grin) programmes that we've watched en famille.

munchbunch12 · 25/02/2024 17:14

Before the series started, I said to DD (8 at the time) "We're going to watch Gladiators, it used to be really good fun when I was young". She was very reluctant to watch at first, when I asked why it turned out she'd just been learning about Rome at school, and thought the series would literally be fighting to the death, possibly with live animals!!

Piggywaspushed · 25/02/2024 17:17

I love Ninja Warrior. I suspect there my be a contestant overlap. The very best NW contestants would laugh in the face of the Wall , the Edge, and the eliminator.

Legend is phenomenally (and deliberately?) bad at The Edge. It always seems unfair on the contestant that doesn't get him!

noblegiraffe · 25/02/2024 17:20

It also seems unfair that some women are up against Dynamite in The Ring and others are up against Fury...I know which one I'd pick!

Maximus Decimus Meridius

Gladiator 2 is out later this year, they've wrapped up the filming in Malta

noblegiraffe · 25/02/2024 21:18

I was getting all excited then wondered why they'd moved filming from Sheffield to Malta.

I've just read on twitter that Legend used to be a PE teacher. Now I like him even more!

Fury, I think she’s brilliant. I also love nitro, giant and sabre… sorry but anyone else think sabre looks like Paris fury?

RightOnTheEdge · 25/02/2024 10:11

My dd really likes Bionic and keeps complaining that he's hardly on.
We've been loving it and it's really rare that we sit down and watch something together.

Our other favourites are Nitro, Legend and Phantom and Fury, Saber and Diamond.

I do wish they'd have more games though. I used to like the one that was a big pyramid and they had to race to the top and the Gladiators would throw them back down and try to push them off!

I said to my mum about the pyramid. I used to love that as a kid. Proper brutal… im wondering if they’ve had to tone it down to suit with this day and age as the gladiators aren’t as aggressive as they used to be.

albapunk · 25/02/2024 22:48

Nitro and Legend for the male gladiators and Fury and Sabre for the females! Sabre is actually owner at my DPs gym and often takes some of his classes. She's really nice in real life and suits the Sabre personality well!

noblegiraffe · 25/02/2024 22:57

I think there are lots of DHs on here that would be interested in taking a gym class with Sabre! Grin

I thought she looked familiar! Yes!

FasterthanaButteredOtter · 26/02/2024 11:14

@RightOnTheEdge oh yes the pyramid was brilliant!

Agree with all the Gauntlet comments, too easy. I really wish the lovely Finlay army chap from Edinburgh had done one or two sections, those points would have been a couple of seconds and that's all he would have needed to win. Really hope he's the fastest runner up and his ribs are ok.
