I am shocked, I was listening to him on Sunday. My heart goes out to his family

Gosh, what a shock! Radio is such a special medium in the way that it connects with its audience, he’s going to be missed by so many people.

mrsjg · 13/02/2024 17:54

This is so sad. I loved listening to him years ago. I remember around the time of my GCSE's I would have Radio 1 on all day. Wake up to Simon Mayo, then Simon Bates, listen to Gary Davies, then Steve Wright and then Mark Goodyear.

I lived in a town that had the Radio 1 Roadshow and always hoped we'd get Steve Wright (never did).

So sad. Steve has been the easy going background company for me over many years from Saturday afternoons on Radio 1 in the 80s to every afternoon on the school run on Radio 2 . Will really miss him .

greengreengrass25 · 13/02/2024 17:56

Shocked

Was listening to POTPs on Saturday

He was so good

RIP

TrustPenguins · 13/02/2024 17:59

Just seen this. I'm shocked.

crumblingschools · 13/02/2024 18:00

The music they are playing on Radio 2 is making me cry 😢I don’t know how Sara Cox is managing it

ThreeRingCircus · 13/02/2024 18:03

Totally shocked. I have said on here before I was not a fan of his, but I appreciated he was loved by many and having been on the radio for that long... people have grown up with him in the background.

69 is no age at all and it sounds like it was sudden. I really feel for his friends, family and colleagues.

43ontherocksporfavor · 13/02/2024 18:09

When I had post natal depression and I felt alone, his show always lifted me and made me feel connected. Shout out ( Shaart aaart!) to you Steve! ❤️

I remember this being a similar schedule to my day revising for gcses
I remember his characters the newsagent and the old woman.

the80sweregreat · 13/02/2024 18:51

I'm crying buckets and I wasn't even a fan of his
He did seem one of the good guys and his show was well put together and they had fun I think.

motheronthedancefloor · 13/02/2024 18:59

was he sick?

BeverForget · 13/02/2024 19:01

This is very sad news, and very sudden. He was lining up some new shows...

BeverForget · 13/02/2024 19:03

@Fizbosshoes 'Captain Birdseye - the man with the fishy fingers'...

JBirch · 13/02/2024 19:03

such sad news ;-(

ThomasinaLivesHere · 13/02/2024 19:08

Not listened to him in ages but had him on when I was a student as I found listening to the radio quite relaxing when I was stressed.

Such sad news! He seemed a good guy.

SidekickSylvia · 13/02/2024 19:12

Ask Elvis, Mr. Spoons, Mr. Angry etc. always used to make me laugh as a teenager. Such sad news.

the80sweregreat · 13/02/2024 19:13

They all seem genuinely upset on radio 2 and I did feel sorry for Sara Cox who found out live on air today. He seemed very well liked

Mummyoflittledragon · 13/02/2024 19:14

So sad. 😞 I haven’t listened to him in ages. But just thinking of him brings back many memories.

Alwaysgoingforit · 13/02/2024 19:15

I loved 'Steve Wright in the afternoon' with his great 'alter egos' coming into the studio, Mr Angry on the phone, the social worker 'Get some therapy', the office cleaner among others. He was so funny.
Such a sad loss.

WhoopWhoopNow · 13/02/2024 17:10

His show last Sunday was pre recorded according to the BBC, it does seem very sudden though.

He always prerecorded Sunday Love songs on a Thursday. He expected to be in this week as usual, from his sign off.
Shocking.

ToffeeTalk · 13/02/2024 19:19

Thanks Steve, you were magic. This is so sad.

baileybrosbuildingandloan · 13/02/2024 19:19

exLtEveDallas · 13/02/2024 17:33

Aww he was the sound of my teenage afternoons - Damian the Social Worker, Sid the Manager, Gervais the Hairdresser and Mr Angry from Purley.

Such a shame

Mr Angry! Thank you for reminding me.

shakeshakeshake11 · 13/02/2024 19:19

So sad. Part of my soundtrack for 40 plus years. So sad listening to his music on Sara’s show knowing he wasn’t listening along with me. Now I understand who started me off on my love for 70’s disco. Sara’s show was beautiful and well done to her for getting through it.

the80sweregreat · 13/02/2024 19:19

Dh liked his show and often the characters on it reminded me of old Monty python sketches! The old lady etc
It was certainly different to today's much more bland offerings where it's all very samey.

bigdecisionstomake · 13/02/2024 19:20

I am so sad about this. Steve Wright in the afternoon was always on on the school bus radio on the way home so he was a big part of the soundtrack of my teenage years.

69 is so young. Sending love to all his family. You will be missed Steve.
