I am shocked, I was listening to him on Sunday. My heart goes out to his family

I listened to his show in my teens, now I'm old when I hear his voice I'm transported back to 1987.

I wasn't a fan of his R2 afternoon show, but I thought he was doing a grand job of POTP.

It was clear that Sara was devastated, she was clearly blindsided as she said. If nothing else, it shows that the R2 jocks have deep regard for each other.

Keep jockin Wrighty, no G.

Awww what sad news. Lived to a decent age though. Would have been 70 this year. Many people don't make it to that age.

R.I.P. Steve Flowers

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 13/02/2024 19:24

I really feel for the radio team tonight. Sara and now Jo have done everything so well, it must be really difficult for them.

rc22 · 13/02/2024 19:25

Such sad news. Steve Wright in the Afternoon was the soundtrack for so much of my life. Listening to R2 now. Jo Whiley is in bits.

crumblingschools · 13/02/2024 19:26

@EbonyRaven 69 isn’t that old.

LightSpeeds · 13/02/2024 19:26

That's really sad. I used to love him on Radio 1.

I agree he was bloody brilliant on POTP, the natural successor to Tony Blackburn. Such a shame it was a short run.

Parrotseatthemall · 13/02/2024 19:31

The Old Lady was a real person when I used to listen at work in the 2000s very warm and funny, as was Steve very sad to hear of his sudden passing RIEP Steve thanks for the smiles

the80sweregreat · 13/02/2024 19:38

Yes , Sara was brilliant tonight and it has been very respectful. Must have been so hard for them all.

So so sad, Sarah ls doing well keeping it together they go back a long way. Soundtrack to my youth loved his Pamela Anderson.

I think you're thinking of Kenny Everett?

Jellykat · 13/02/2024 20:56

@EbonyRaven 69 isnt a 'decent' age, i'm 61 this year and the way things are going i probably wont even be collecting my pension by 69!

I loved Steve right. Always easy on the ear. 69 no age but I remember thinking he was overweight and seemed a bit unhealthy until more recently. Anyway thoughts are with his friends and family.

There is always one🙄

LostFrog · 13/02/2024 21:03

I am really sad about this! He just seemed like a genuinely nice man.

the80sweregreat · 13/02/2024 21:08

It was hinted at in the press years ago that he had some health concerns and I often wonder if he had to take steroids as he did put on some weight and was normally much thinner and fitter looking ? Although I haven't a clue and only my observations on some photos of him online not looking his best years ago now.
He was upset that he lost the weekday afternoon show , but he was on Sunday mornings and did pick of the pops on Saturday afternoons, so it can't have been too acrimonious.
The radio two people did seem very upset today. He was obviously well liked

GreenClock · 13/02/2024 21:22

The genuine fondness emanating from colleagues … you just know that nothing dodgy is going to come out about him! He was obviously a standup bloke. Very well-liked, it seems. I feel for all of them. And mainly his family and close friends, what a shock, it seems to have been sudden.

Thewishingchair123 · 13/02/2024 22:07

Feel really sad about his passing. Grew up listening to his afternoon show and his wit and humorous banter with his team and listeners have made me smile hundreds of times over the years. As Sara said he seemed a truly kind man as well with a real craft for connecting with listeners. Will miss him lots.

I’m not ‘in bits’ or crying. Because I didn’t know Steve Wright personally and I haven’t listened to his show for many years.

But I am sad about him dying. He was a very good DJ (in its proper sense) and he did make really good radio. As LtEveDallas said, Sid The Manager, Mr Angry, Gervais and the rest were brilliant in their time.

I think I miss the sort of great radio there used to be and wonderful presenters like Steve Wright who made it.

43ontherocksporfavor · 14/02/2024 16:51

He was always so lighthearted and gave me a laugh every single time I listened to him. RIP Steve you touched so many people and were a welcome voice in their daily lives. I will miss you.

decionsdecisions62 · 14/02/2024 17:21

Gosh poor Jeremy vine today. He really broke down.

Jellykat · 14/02/2024 18:10

He did didnt he @decionsdecisions62 bless him, i really didnt think he'd get through that bit!

Unbeknownsty · 14/02/2024 19:55

Scott Mills was devastated too; so sad to hear all the presenters genuinely grieving and upset. Vernon was great - saying he wasn't going to be upset but focus on playing great music that Steve would have loved.

RIP Steve. :(
