Does my child have red hair?

When my newborn was born 10 weeks ago they had dark hair, striking blue eyes and fair eyelashes/eyebrows. His skin is also fair.

His hair has fallen out in the usual pattern and I think it is red of some description but other people don't agree.

Last week a friend said it looked red when I held my baby up in the light at a certain angle. Maybe auburn colour.

It doesn't matter if the hair is red, I'm curious as I always felt my baby was going to be a red head lol

For reference my mum is a bit ginger, as she's Irish. My siblings and all the other grandchild have either blonde hair or boring brown lol. I've got light brown and lots of blonde.

I think if he was going to be brunette his eyebrows and eyelashes would be dark already.

Curious as I was born blonde and now I'm brunette, but mousey

My twin DDs were very much like that as babies - i.e. you wouldn't have described them as red heads, but could see the red in certain lights.

They're now 4 and have beautiful multi-tonal hair that's somewhere between light ginger and strawberry blond.

10ThousandSpoons · 10/02/2024 11:03

You'll need to wait a bit and let it catch the light

Zoomerang · 10/02/2024 11:06

The redheads in my family have been very obviously red from as soon as they had hair.

Lots of the rest of us have coppery tones in certain lights, but nowhere near proper red. I suspect that will be what your DS ends up with.

My son had very dark brown hair at birth. By the time he was 1, it was bright blonde....now he's 10 and it's mousey. You can't possibly tell at this point....

faffadoodledo · 10/02/2024 11:11

Not enough hair to determine! My son was born with a shock of dark ginger hair and it has remained (he never lost it), alongside his brown eyes and ability to tan. V unusual in a red head. And we all love it. He's 28 now, with a beard and looks like a very fit, handsome Viking
There is a lot of weirdness around red hair. It seems to be a 'concern' among many new parents. My sister has it and was horribly bullied at school. Blue eyes and fair skin. She now lightens it to look more strawberry.
The best looking young woman I know has dark ginger hair. It is stunning.

Palomabalom · 10/02/2024 11:12

It looks brown. Maybe the pinkness of the scalp is giving an impression of redness? All my kids had light lashes and brows but now all brown haired teens !

Singleandproud · 10/02/2024 11:16

DD was very obviously a red head from birth, she had a bright orange mohican. It's changed to titian now so very red and gold and fiery in bright sunlight, but browner in the shade. Both her dad and I are brown haired but with Irish / Scottish grandparents so she must have gotten the recessive red head genes from both of us.

I think your DC looks browner but there is plenty of time for it to change. Dbro had golden ringlets until he was 5 and now has dark brown hair

Paw2024 · 10/02/2024 11:19

I was a very obvious redhead! Although it's changed colour so much over the years

BarbaricPeach · 10/02/2024 11:24

You won't be able to tell until they have much more hair. My son's hair had a ginger tinge to it when he was born but by the time he had "proper" hair it was completely blonde and has stayed that way since.

JumpinJellyfish · 10/02/2024 11:27

It looks brown to me.

I think a true redhead would be much more obvious at this point but he might have reddish tones later.

My DD was born with quite dark brown hair but now she is 3 it is blonde with a big red stripe in it - looks amazing! My dad is a redhead so I know I have one red gene and guess she inherited it from me. She is also very pale and freckly.

DS on the other hand has always been blonde and tans so obviously got my non-red gene from my mum.

Thehamsterthatcametotea · 10/02/2024 11:31

boring brown lol

ThirtyThrillionThreeTrees · 10/02/2024 11:47

Too hard to tell from photo.

I had red hair when I was born and lovely ginger curls until I was about 3. Not ideal what happened but it disappeared.

Somehow ended up with straight mousey brown hair which I constantly dye red!

MushroomQueen · 10/02/2024 11:50

No, I don't think so, my son had blondish red hair at birth and now is blonde but getting darker, his sister born with very dark brown hair and is now blonde like her older brother. Middle child born with v dark hair and stayed brown but got lighter, you cannot tell what will happen to their hair I have found from my 3.

Trinity65 · 10/02/2024 12:43

Its brown

naisspray · 10/02/2024 12:49

Inconclusive, I'd say! 🤷‍♀️

Paw2024 · 10/02/2024 12:56

It can change a lot too
This is all my hair, not coloured, yes the lighting isn't the same but even my hairdresser is "and what colour is your hair deciding to be today" Grin

When we were on delivery suite, DH took a look at the business end and proudly announced "It's (we don't find out the sex beforehand) got red hair!" before DC3 was even born! 😅

Surely that's dyed hair? I can understand brightness etc but it looks dyed.

@naisspray nope, totally untouched
It was bright orange when I was little, then went more auburn, now it can look red still or more towards brown

😅 Nah, I didn't need to push much anyway; she was my third, after all. No stopping her, she was on her way, a flaming beacon heading out into the world! 🔥 😅

Dontdeclutterthemagic · 10/02/2024 13:47

My dd is very ginger but it doesn't always photograph. Depending very much on the light.

I'd say your ds is more brown in those pictures, but i have photos like that of DD socould just be the photo. She always has visibly ginger eyelashes and eyebrows though.

I do feel anti gingerism is quite prevalent, loads of people make quite unpleasant comments thinking it's funny.

BertieBotts · 10/02/2024 13:47

IME when they are redheads you can see the red from birth. (Two different babies)

That's light brown.
Redheads tend to in most cases be very obvious quite early on with hair colour.
