Does my child have red hair?

naisspray · 10/02/2024 09:56

When my newborn was born 10 weeks ago they had dark hair, striking blue eyes and fair eyelashes/eyebrows. His skin is also fair.

His hair has fallen out in the usual pattern and I think it is red of some description but other people don't agree.

Last week a friend said it looked red when I held my baby up in the light at a certain angle. Maybe auburn colour.

It doesn't matter if the hair is red, I'm curious as I always felt my baby was going to be a red head lol

For reference my mum is a bit ginger, as she's Irish. My siblings and all the other grandchild have either blonde hair or boring brown lol. I've got light brown and lots of blonde.

I think if he was going to be brunette his eyebrows and eyelashes would be dark already.

Curious as I was born blonde and now I'm brunette, but mousey

Nah it looks brown to me. But not really enough to tell. We have a lot of red hair in our family and it's been very obvious from day 1 , it's not just the hair, it's the eyebrows and skin colour as well.

IME when they are redheads you can see the red from birth. (Two different babies)

Omg how lovely

I can’t tell op but love the red headed baby photos in pp

LBOCS2 · 10/02/2024 13:52

When both DDs were born they were clearly redheads - DH and I are not but there's a lot of red in the wider family so it wasn't a huge surprise. The MW asked if it was expected too! They're both more on the strawberry blonde/ginger side than auburn but definitely red.

TwistedSisters · 10/02/2024 13:53

Yes further photos look brown to me.

Also, red hair is a recessive gene and both parents need to be carriers for it to come out, so it needs to be on both sides of the family.

My DS has obviously got the red haired gene from me and it looks very strawberry at times, like mine, but other times it looks blonde ...depends what length it is as well. Its certainly not proper ginger or what I would call ginger anyway..

NeverDropYourMooncup · 10/02/2024 14:00

Child 1 - bright red head. No question at all about it.

Child 2 - incredibly dark. Now chestnut with red and random streaks of blonde.

Both had bright blue eyes, as babies do, #1 has pale green eyes, white lashes and brows, hair as bright as possible, pure flame red + gold strands. #2, dark green eyes.

Me: Dark, went dark conker/wet squirrel red very quickly, green eyes (and Scots+Ashkenazi heritage), now in the absence of pure red as it's all gone white, ginger. Siblings had dark, bright white and then very dark or dark blonde hair. Dad = no red in family, dark hair, but was blonde as a child until about 12, has a dark red beard.

Yours (absolutely beautiful, btw) looks more like blonde than dark, but it could still come through sandy or light red later.

Hopefully you're prepared to tell people to fuck off if they're doing that arseholery about red hair shite already? Even if he hasn't got red hair himself.

😍 Those wee faces could almost make me feel broody again; just as well I'm 53 so well over that stage! 😅

Bargello · 10/02/2024 14:06

I had two blonde children and my third has red hair. The older two were strawberry blonde when born (the little hair they had) but by around six months were definitely blonde. I've attached a pic of my youngest at about 3 minutes old trying to latch onto my shoulder (!) for a feed. His hair is clearly red and he's still very red.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 10/02/2024 14:06

DS was a ginger baby (DDad was a redhead) who morphed into a very blonde toddler and now a dark, mucky blonde teenager.

No they aren't doing the ginger thing.

I'm imagining my child being a ginger and being called Big Red as a nickname :)

It's literally only me who thinks he's got some red hair.... only one person has commented "oh yes in that light it looked slightly auburn red".

I'm not fussed either way

Yes, as I said earlier, neither DH nor I have red hair, but DH's first cousin does, as does my dads cousin's daughter, so red hair is present on both sides.

BloodyAdultDC · 10/02/2024 14:15

All of your pics are impossible to see what colour it's going to end up op.

My ds was born with a mop of thick jet black hair. He rubbed it all off by about 4 months and it came back blonde, like Tintin. 20 years later he's gone more mousey but if it's likely to change you wont be able to tell until the new hair fills in again. I have a lot of red in my hair but neither ds has any.

Dibblydoodahdah · 10/02/2024 14:19

DS2 looked like a redhead from birth but he was actually blond as a baby/toddler, then it turned strawberry blond and now age 10 it’s becoming more brown but with red in it. DS1 is also brown with a red tone. It’s quite an unusual colour and if he was a girl people would think it had been dyed.

It's an NHS Scotland hospital baby gown. 🙂

I've never seen them before! Our hospital uses the same material for its blankets though. So cute

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 10/02/2024 16:39

@Qwerty21 Barnsley Hospital uses that fabric for baby sheets. I have a pic of mine swaddled in one somewhere..

PTSDBarbiegirl · 10/02/2024 16:42

Auburn!

Thanks, she's fourteen now, not quite so adorable! 😅 But a good kid nonetheless. 🙂

Skiphopbump · 10/02/2024 16:57

One of my DDs has hair which is brownish ginger, when the light
hits it can look really quite ginger.

Does my child have red hair?
cerisepanther73 · 10/02/2024 17:05

@naisspray

At first glance wondering 🤔 if it's the more darker auburn hair range,

Could pass pass for brown colour too

I was just looking at first photo

Second photo looks more like auburn red to me...

TheTimeIsNowMaybeNow · 10/02/2024 17:05

I was here to find out if that was a blanket or gown, they have blankets of the same material here. Cute

YoungCuriousAndLookingForAnswers · 10/02/2024 17:08

Looks brown to me.

ChickpeaPie · 10/02/2024 17:11

It’s brown. Or “boring brown” as you called it 🙄

LostInPoetry · 10/02/2024 17:16

It looks brown, no red at all. It can change though.

My son was born with black hair but went very blond within months, then got darker as he got older. He now has dark brown hair as an adult.

My daughter was born with dark brown hair and it never changed at all.
