It’s a wet Sunday afternoon, jobs are done, what can I watch that will draw me in (the grittier the better)

I’m losing the will to live over TV just now, I just can’t find anything I want to watch.

I love dark British/Welsh (occasionally American and Scandinavian)
dramas, complex characters, takes on historical true crime cases and social issues, I also really enjoy and moving or unforgettable documentaries

I really dislike glossy (unrealistic) characters and storylines, anything Spy/MI5 or as soon as the synopsis suggests as hint of science fiction and comedy.

Occasionally I’ll find a diamond that I’ve previously over looked because off it having the one of above themes in it (Life on Mars being one of series that I think I might like but put off with the time travel and that it might not be dark enough) The Handmaids Tale being the perfect example and one of the best things I’ve seen.

Things that I’ve really enjoyed over the last few years…

This is Britain
Happy Valley
Red Riding
Snow Angels
Craith/Hidden
Hinterland
Man hunt
True Detective
We need to Talk about Kevin
The Long Shadow
Sharp objects
Little Fires Everywhere
Mare of Eastown

Help me MN!! 🙏🏻

Inside man
criminal (I just watched the UK one but there are lots of countries versions)

I recently watched Dear Child on Netflix. It’s a German thriller - six episodes - only watch if you don’t mind subtitles. It is a gripping watch. It starts with an abducted woman escaping and shows the aftermath and lots of flashbacks

Well, that's me sorted. Thank you Mumsnet !!😂

Oh wow what app is that?

wednamenov · 01/11/2023 13:02

It's called 'Any list'. Free. I use it for groceries normally. I've struggled to find a decent app to help me remember what I've watched already, and what I should watch based on recommendations. The number of times we start something only to realise we've already watched it 🙄

So I decided this morning to start using it for this too. I cannot remember titles of film / series, so am terrible at recommending things to other people. The app allows you to create categories, so I've got 'online recommendations', and items can be dragged and dropped into 'things to watch next' and then dragged from there into 'good' or rubbish. And capacity for notes too. I don't know why I didn't think of using it before.

Hope that link works. You can also share lists. So I've added DH onto it as well.

lochmaree · 01/11/2023 20:13

@mum2jakie it was also excellent!
