It’s a wet Sunday afternoon, jobs are done, what can I watch that will draw me in (the grittier the better)

I’m losing the will to live over TV just now, I just can’t find anything I want to watch.

I love dark British/Welsh (occasionally American and Scandinavian)
dramas, complex characters, takes on historical true crime cases and social issues, I also really enjoy and moving or unforgettable documentaries

I really dislike glossy (unrealistic) characters and storylines, anything Spy/MI5 or as soon as the synopsis suggests as hint of science fiction and comedy.

Occasionally I’ll find a diamond that I’ve previously over looked because off it having the one of above themes in it (Life on Mars being one of series that I think I might like but put off with the time travel and that it might not be dark enough) The Handmaids Tale being the perfect example and one of the best things I’ve seen.

Things that I’ve really enjoyed over the last few years…

This is Britain
Happy Valley
Red Riding
Snow Angels
Craith/Hidden
Hinterland
Man hunt
True Detective
We need to Talk about Kevin
The Long Shadow
Sharp objects
Little Fires Everywhere
Mare of Eastown

Help me MN!! 🙏🏻

Severance on Apple TV also brilliant - dark, dystopian style. You can get a free trial of Apple TV

TryAgainWithFeeling · 29/10/2023 14:32

Time. I thought it was excellent. Series 2 has just been released, I’ve not seen it yet.

Eastisup · 29/10/2023 14:38

The Staircase. Documentary, not the series. Netflix I think. Based on a true crime. American but absolutely fascinating.

Bosch and Bosch Legacy on Prime.

American, which I am not generally a fan of, except for this.

Keeping Faith on the BBC? And shetland!

TheLonelyGoatTurd · 29/10/2023 14:45

Another vote for Blue Lights, or if you’re up for a fantastic documentary series, Once Upon A Time In Northern Ireland is a really affecting watch.

I second Severence on Apple tv. It is American and slightly sci-fi ish but very dark, unsettling and absolutely gripping. Best thing I've watched in such a long time - first episode is slow but its def worth sticking.

Also on apple tv, black bird Is good for a true crime dramatisation again quite gritty and slow horses for a British drama/comedy.

I watched Get Gotti last night on Netflix which was good, New York godfather.

DisplayPurposesOnly · 29/10/2023 15:21

I watched Edge of Darkness when it was originally on so it's contemporary as far as I'm concerned 😃I watched it again recently and whilst the setting is now 'old' everything is such high quality - the script, the cast is astounding - and it's still compelling.

PerpetualStudent · 29/10/2023 15:22

Bodies on Netflix has a science fiction element but is otherwise densely plotted and really gripping
