It’s a wet Sunday afternoon, jobs are done, what can I watch that will draw me in (the grittier the better)

I’m losing the will to live over TV just now, I just can’t find anything I want to watch.

I love dark British/Welsh (occasionally American and Scandinavian)
dramas, complex characters, takes on historical true crime cases and social issues, I also really enjoy and moving or unforgettable documentaries

I really dislike glossy (unrealistic) characters and storylines, anything Spy/MI5 or as soon as the synopsis suggests as hint of science fiction and comedy.

Occasionally I’ll find a diamond that I’ve previously over looked because off it having the one of above themes in it (Life on Mars being one of series that I think I might like but put off with the time travel and that it might not be dark enough) The Handmaids Tale being the perfect example and one of the best things I’ve seen.

Things that I’ve really enjoyed over the last few years…

This is Britain
Happy Valley
Red Riding
Snow Angels
Craith/Hidden
Hinterland
Man hunt
True Detective
We need to Talk about Kevin
The Long Shadow
Sharp objects
Little Fires Everywhere
Mare of Eastown

Help me MN!! 🙏🏻

LOVED the fall, one of the few things I’ve watched more than once!

If you have paramount I 100% recommend The Burning Girls

Milknosugarta · 29/10/2023 13:57

The Wire. It is American, but good. Don't let the first episode put you off.

Eddyraisins · 29/10/2023 13:58

DiamondTiddler · 29/10/2023 13:34

I watched Love and Death on itv x this morning. It's based on a true story and stars Elizabeth Olsen. I found it quite gripping

Candy the Disney version is also good.

Looks more like the real Candy too.

Luckymeluckyme · 29/10/2023 13:59

@Ashleysaidwhat I seen the trailer, is it supernatural or crime based?

Milknosugarta · 29/10/2023 14:00

Also The Newsroom. As above.

Edge of Darkness

Oh yes. This is brilliant. I was really reluctant to watch because it was dated but it is outstanding.

Blue Lights is very good and gets grittier.

EnoughIsay · 29/10/2023 14:01

Shetland
Shetland
Shetland!

Seriously good police proceedural.

Ashes to Ashes - dressed up as gloss and fun but oh so dark. Excellent Keeley Hawes.

Eddyraisins · 29/10/2023 14:03

Saint X on Disney.

Defending Jacob on apple.

There's something about Pam on Channel 5 crazy true story. Renne Zwelleger plays pam.

Burning Body on Netflix. The true story of Rosa Perale.

Girl in the wall BBC

The girls from Plainville. True story of cyber aided suicide. Channel 4 I think.

GiveYourHeadAWobble · 29/10/2023 14:03

I recommend Rocks.

Supernatural with a little bit of crime. My husband can't sit and watch tv (attention span of a gnat) but he binged this with me last weekend so it must be good lol

Raincloudsonasunnyday · 29/10/2023 14:06

Blood
Assume you’ve watched Broadchurch?
The Bridge
Wallander (any of them)

There are quite a few Scandi noirs out there but not sure if you can access in the UK

PuppyMonkey · 29/10/2023 14:06

The Jimmy Savile thing with Steve Coogan is excellent. Watchable in an afternoon?

I also liked The Capture - bit farfetched. Or is it…??? Wink

The Responder with Martin Freeman.

I know you like British stuff but am assuming you would do Succession because it is about a million times better than anything else mentioned so far.

Eddyraisins · 29/10/2023 14:07

Payback and Irvine Walsh Crime on ITV.

RampantIvy · 29/10/2023 14:09

While this doesn't fit the brief I found The Inheritance surprsingly good. Like you, I like a gritty crime drama, but this was really good, and well acted.

WickWood · 29/10/2023 14:09

Luther!

thenightsky · 29/10/2023 14:12

We've just binged Payback on ITV X. Very good.

Daftapath · 29/10/2023 14:13

Currently watching Fearless ( Helen McCrory).

Have recently 'enjoyed' Manhunt and The Long Shadow which I see that you have already watched.

Also, The Secret (James Nesbitt), Payback (Morven Christie), Broadchurch, Deadwater Fell.

We also watched the whole of Silent Witness from the start! 🫣

I was just going to suggest 'The Burning Girls'. You can have a free trial of Paramount.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 29/10/2023 14:18

Dirty John (Netflix)

The night of. Best thing I ever watched

This is an excellent recommendation, I couldn’t switch it off either. So gripping and well acted

wantmorenow · 29/10/2023 14:26

broadchurch - don't know how i missed in first time out. gripping and bingeworthy.

LK2610 · 29/10/2023 14:26

If you like British dramas, I thought Trust Me was great. Very gripping and a unique storyline of a nurse who pretends to be a doctor.
