Has anyone else heard it?

Very interesting, he's much more honest than most guests. Very interesting but quite 'damaged' man.

I didn't find it an easy listen but very interesting.

Anyone else?

I really enjoyed it. He seems like a lovely man, but goodness me, tgat stuff about his childhood and father was difficult to listen to

larkstar · 22/09/2023 19:23

Yes, I listened on the BBC Sounds App earlier on today - I applaud his open heartedness. I didn't realise Rik had been so affected by his quad bike accident. I wonder if Jen Saunder's upbringing enabled her to provide him with the support, acceptance and love he wanted. I really enjoyed the program.

Frickinghell · 22/09/2023 19:33

I haven’t listened but will do. I really like Ade, have read a few bits about his childhood. Poor guy

choochooallaboard · 22/09/2023 19:39

Will definitely be listening to this. Thanks everyone.

Pumpernickel101 · 22/09/2023 19:40

I loved it.
what a lovely human being!
Another man with boarding school syndrome though. So tragic. 😔

I hadn’t realised that Rick had become so brain damaged. That must’ve been so hard for Adrian because he’d have been grieving for his friend even though he was still alive.

The bit where he talks about Rick’s mum remembering him and Ade laughing their heads off on deck chairs in the back garden and her wondering what they found so funny made me cry before work. So moving and real.

I love that he is brave enough to follow so many different creative pursuits.

Lovely bloke.

Yes, I heard this when it was on last Sunday.

I love desert island discs.

His father is talked about throughout, he obviously had a big impact on him.

HorribleHisTories15 · 22/09/2023 19:44

He is one of my comedy heroes, so I was trying to listen live earlier on this morning, but had to keep leaving my desk.

He has had such a fascinating life and has managed to make light of his upbringing and background. I admire him, even if his music choices were a bit eclectic at times.

Gotta love a bit of Bottom eh?

Clymene · 22/09/2023 19:44

It should be required listening for boarding school parents

HappiDaze · 22/09/2023 19:47

Lenny Henry has a really interesting Desert Island discs too

OhComeOnFFS · 22/09/2023 19:50

I really loved this episode but found it so upsetting when he cried talking about Rik's illness and death. I hadn't thought about how they fitted into the history of comedy, but think he's absolutely right about that.

Notonthestairs · 22/09/2023 19:57

I've been meaning to listen to this. Will download for my morning dog walk.

HappiDaze · 22/09/2023 19:58

I've downloaded it for later too

Revolutionfrommybed · 22/09/2023 20:02

I think he went to the school where my brother went, he had one of his old text books. Did he mention his boarding school?

Wikipedia says Pocklington

FreeMyPen · 22/09/2023 20:05

I listened to this episode last Sunday too and it’s stayed with me all week. Like the PP mentioned , his honesty and humility was noticeable. And yes, that bit about Rik’s mum recalling the pair together - just a reminder about the immutable power of laughter and friendship. Also loved hearing how Jennifer declared her love.
He’s got his autobiography coming out this month so am thinking I’ll get that on audible at some point too. Just to hear more about his experience of stoicism. This has helped him greatly apparently.

JohnnyYenSetHimselfOnFireAgain · 22/09/2023 20:36

Didn't know about this so thank you for posting it. He's one of my comedy heroes ever since The Young Ones.

Willmafrockfit · 23/09/2023 09:45

listening to it now

poorbuthappy · 23/09/2023 10:02

I will download this today. I am very disappointed that we were meant to see him next week in st David's hall on his book tour and of course it's been postponed due to the bloody concrete.

Willmafrockfit · 23/09/2023 10:26

very revealing and heart felt

Yes. Gosh, this was a tough listen, but very interesting.

BatteryPoweredMammy · 23/09/2023 17:40

Sorry, I'm not very techy.
Can someone explain how to download the recording or do you have to be in the UK? Thanks.

Jennifer Saunders also had father in the military, her wikipedia page says she went to boarding school from 5-18 😥

DollyDaisyDo · 23/09/2023 17:52

There's also an interview with him by Caitlyn Moran in todays Times. I think it's behind a firewall online though.

It's kn BBC radio sounds @BatteryPoweredMammy not sure if you can access that outside of the UK
