Has anyone else heard it?

Very interesting, he's much more honest than most guests. Very interesting but quite 'damaged' man.

I didn't find it an easy listen but very interesting.

Anyone else?

Interesting thread - I’m seeing him at the theatre in a couple of weeks so now looking forward to it even more!

@allaroundthelamplight that possible chimes with something I me and my wife read when we read a book together by John Cheese and his former family therapist John Skynner - (it was something that also related to us)

Families And How To Survive Them https://amzn.eu/d/4gPiNxu

People are sometimes drawn to other people, even before really knowing them, because of similarities in the way they have been shaped or affected by events in their family background - for me and my wife, our fathers had worked away for many years of our early childhoods, actually in identical jobs (welders, steel erectors, fabricators) - months long contracts working on huge industrial construction projects in Scotland and around the Welsh coast. I wonder if this resonance existed between Ade and Jen.

larkstar · 24/09/2023 10:33

i.e. boarding school background.

So much for the edit function - it times out quickly.

allaroundthelamplight · 24/09/2023 11:15

@larkstar yes that resonates with me, too. Trauma seeks trauma - was certainly the case for me when I was younger and ran through a range of boyfriends with equally dysfunctional backgrounds to me.

Amazing that they're so solid. I'm interested that therapy didn't help Ade (but really glad that stoicism did) I wondered if it helped Jennifer.

Came in a few minutes in, didn’t know who it was at first. Thought, who is this lovely, funny man? Recommended it to friends.

rcat74 · 24/09/2023 11:19

It was very sad and he was so sanguine about it. He must be very resilient. I loved his Dad’s song about the British weather!

LlynTegid · 24/09/2023 12:00

I haven't but will do, thank you OP for this thread.

Just listened to this on my run. Not much makes me cry whilst running, but I had to stop a few times.
Really enjoyed the fact it was an extended version - it would have felt very rushed in the usual 45 mins. His stories and memories were worth the extra time.

Tokyo2005 · 28/09/2023 11:56

I really enjoyed this too. I wasn't sure about him beforehand but he came across really well. I had also heard rumours from someone who works in tv that their marriage isn't real because JS is gay, but he sounded very in love so perhaps that's not true. It was lovely listening to him talking about his daughters and how loving a father he sounds.

Findyourneutralspace · 28/09/2023 22:33

Just listening to this now. I think it might become one of my favourites

ThreeBearsPorridge · 29/09/2023 01:07

Very moving and so open and real. My mother and husband both had an appalling time at boarding school. It’s really damaged them . The pain of that time was just under the surface all the time he was talking. I didn’t know much about him previously and wasn’t a fan of the Young Ones so feel I know a lot more about him now.
What a lovely man.

DontBeAPrickDarren · 29/09/2023 03:41

Just had a listen as I can’t sleep. I seem to remember watching The Young Ones a lot as a child but have no idea where I watched it as my parents definitely would not have had it on. Was never a fan of Bottom but enjoyed that listen. I didn’t realise they’d done so much after Rik’s injury, I wonder if he’ll talk about that more in the book as it sounds like it was quite a painful time for him.

Twoscotcheggsandajarofmarmite · 29/09/2023 19:52

I missed this episode as I work strange shifts so only catch about one in three, but I’ve just listened after seeing this thread.
What a thoroughly nice man he is. The image of him dancing one on one with young Martin, whilst retaining eye contact, to Sugar Sugar is still making me smile.

mizu · 30/09/2023 09:45

He is at the Cheltenham Lit Fest if anyone is interested!

Mistandmellowfruitfullness · 30/09/2023 10:00

It was one of the most honest and endearing DiDs I've listened to. He was so emotional talking about his best friend Rik - wanted to hug him!
The recollection at boarding school about Martin and them dancing together to "Sugar sugar" made me smile

Almahart · 30/09/2023 10:12

Oh that was such a moving read. Thank you. Off to listen to DID now.

VesperLynne · 30/09/2023 11:21

His recollection of his friendship with Rick Mayall was very moving. They were lifelong friends and very close. He's clearly still grieving for him. Lauren Laverne didn't have to say much, just guide it along and let him talk. You are drawn in by him. Worth listening to.

tonystarksrighthand · 30/09/2023 11:36

I'm going to see him tomorrow in London. Can't wait. Have loved him (Rik, Jen, Dawn etc) my whole life

tonystarksrighthand · 03/10/2023 20:37

He was fabulous on Sunday. It was emotional, funny and clever.

Fantastic man

Wolvesart · 03/10/2023 20:43

I haven’t heard this but he did a Radio 3 prog Signs of Life where some of this was discussed that was fascinating
