Has anyone else heard it?

Very interesting, he's much more honest than most guests. Very interesting but quite 'damaged' man.

I didn't find it an easy listen but very interesting.

Anyone else?

The app works outside the UK. I'm in NZ and about to listen to it. It's available for 21more days.

BatteryPoweredMammy · 23/09/2023 18:29

Thanks everyone. I've just downloaded it. 👍👏

Gosh I am teary reading this and I haven’t listened to it yet. My dad was at bs. He is still traumatized 70 years later

Davros · 23/09/2023 18:35

It was really good on every level

My father too. That’s why we never went to BS because he had such a traumatic time.

PermanentTemporary · 23/09/2023 19:32

It was quite distressing tbh.

BringMeTea · 23/09/2023 19:42

Yes, it was properly moving.

happygolucky42 · 23/09/2023 20:49

I have boarding school syndrome and he describes it beautifully. When he cries about Rick, gosh I'm just bawling. Such a beautiful man!

Dartmoorcheffy · 23/09/2023 20:53

Hes a lovely bloke. She's quite a "don't you know who I am?" unfortunately .

Needapadlockonmyfridge · 23/09/2023 21:02

It was hard to listen to at times, but a really good episode.

BettyBallerina · 23/09/2023 21:04

I heard it. Brought a tear to my eye when he spoke about Rik Mayall.

UkeleleUnicycle · 23/09/2023 21:10

Really interesting. Should be obligatory listening for all the boarding school parents.

There's also an interview with him by Caitlyn Moran in todays Times. I think it's behind a firewall online though.

It should be required listening for boarding school parents

why do this?

He’s an interesting and talented man who has a shitty time at school. It doesn’t mean all boarding school experiences are shitty, especially these days as it is so different.

You diminish him and yourself by turning a personal life experience into a catch all cliche.

Jackiebrambles · 23/09/2023 21:36

Thank you for this, I’ve just listened, very moving. I wept when he spoke about Rik!

Justleaveitblankthen · 23/09/2023 21:40

Thanks for this. I didn't know he was on this week.
I binge listen to Desert Island discs when I do a long drive or housework blitz.
His autobiography looks brilliant and funny.

Must give this a listen. Always loved Ade's anarchic comedy. Eddie and Richie were a great double act.

Boarding school sounds like hell. Inspired Roald Dahl to write about the dark side of human existence while also giving him a somewhat gloomy disposition.

SlightlygrumpyBettyswaitress · 23/09/2023 22:16

Always had a lot of time for him.
When Rik died, I remember him saying something along the lines of "I've nothing to say, he was my best friend."
I understood that when my dbro died at the same age. Sometimes there is just no way of expressing it at all.

WorkSmarter · 23/09/2023 22:26

Aw thanks for sending the link! Aw bless him tears in my eyes too 😏😘

Downtherefordancing · 23/09/2023 22:33

I listened to this in the week. One of the best DIDs. Made me cry too when he got choked talking about Rik 😢

Clymene · 23/09/2023 22:40

@theduchessofspork - that's your opinion. Mine is different.

Pumpernickel101 · 23/09/2023 22:50

If you’ve ever had the misfortune of marrying someone with boarding school syndrome aka ptsd, you might be a little less incredulous.
I’ll tell you what a ‘catch all’ is. Human Children NEED their parents while their brains are developing. FACT.

OllyBJolly · 23/09/2023 22:55

Wonderful episode. Looking forward to the autobiography. Adrian Edmondson comes over as a genuinely likeable person.

I loved boarding school. I was one of five kids and boarding school gave me my own identity and let me shine. I loved my family more because school holidays were more precious (and half way through summer holidays would yearn for term to start!)

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 24/09/2023 08:43

I've just caught up with this. I've been a bit in love with AE since I was 12, and the Young Ones and Comic Strip launched a few days apart. I love him a bit more now. Lovely man, him talking about laughing on the lawn with Rik, and then Rik's brain damage was heartbreaking. Such genuine, authentic human connection.

Willmafrockfit · 24/09/2023 09:38

he didnt mention rik's drinking that he did in The Times, thanks for sharing that
i never watched Bottom but did enjoy the Young ones
