This is 9 months after the accident that he had while filming Top Gear - and which has stopped all production on the series.

I'm assuming a lot of reconstructive surgeries?

He crashes his roofless, air bagless car at 130mph and you’re surprised he was so badly injured. Really. What a horrible thread. Says a lot about a person that would start a thread about someone’s horrific facial injuries and even include a photo to really hammer the point home. Disgusting.

zingally · 09/09/2023 13:06

I saw that picture this morning, and having not heard (or remember hearing) at the time, I assumed this had happened in the past month or so!

NINE MONTHS?! Poor man. His injuries must have been horrific. No wonder production has been cancelled.

We have to remember that Richard Hammond was also very nearly killed while filming for Top Gear. He was incredibly lucky to survive as well.

zoom1982 · 09/09/2023 13:07

Poor guy. I hope he gets all the help and support he needs going forward. It must have been an horrific experience for him.

I am in absolute shock what a poor guy. I miss him on tv think he is a great laugh and love when he gets the hump! I hope he is okay and his poor family too must have been a traumatic time for everyone.

crumpet · 09/09/2023 13:12

Always had a fondness for Freddie, and wish him all the best in his recovery

WAASOAR · 09/09/2023 13:15

I think this should mark the end of Top Gear and it shouldn’t ever be brought back, or at least an end to them driving the cars at high speed on the show. The nice ones (him and Richard Hammond) have both been seriously injured, it’s a matter of time before one of them ends up being killed. They are presenters not racing car drivers.

AmyDudley · 09/09/2023 13:15

I hope he is getting plenty of help and support, he is a lovely guy. It take an awful lot to recover from a life changing accident, it is a long road with many ups and downs. I was pleased to see that he has returned for the moment to his first love cricket as he is helping coach the England one day team. He will be among friends and colleagues who love and respect him and will want to do everything they can to support him.

I hope he knows that there are lots of people wishing him well.

Crapsummer2023 · 09/09/2023 13:24

Hope he makes a full recovery. Top Gear was becoming farcical from towards the end of the Clarkson years. It was more about being boorish and laddish and less about the actual cars. Like an auto version of FHM magazine from the 90s. I couldn’t stand it.

Poor guy. that's going to cost the BBC a LOT. I dont know whether any criminal charges have been brought against BBC but they should be. Conspicuous lack of care for its star performer. Was it the BBC that was responsible for the fatal Noel's House Party years ago? Not good enough.

TheCountessofLocksley · 09/09/2023 14:34

Thank you @YetAnotherBeckyMumsnet - it's changed now

SurelyBassey · 09/09/2023 14:49

@YetAnotherBeckyMumsnet , this thread is really not in the spirit of MN
it’s bloody horrible,
I hope this has no repercussions, criticising how he looks, just vile

PaulaZackMayo · 09/09/2023 15:55

I've seen less offensive threads and posts deleted.

Can not see why this hasn't been deleted.

SirSamVimesCityWatch · 09/09/2023 09:59

I feel very sorry for him. I'm just shocked by the amount of damage caused.

I rather doubt he reads Mumsnet.

Could you not just have been shocked in your head?

HangingByYourFingernails · 09/09/2023 17:29

Like AnyFucker I assume from the look of him that he's had fairly recent reconstruction surgery.

The shocking thing was just to realise how long it's been since he's been seen on public - his injuries were obviously pretty severe but it's lovely to see him out and about and enjoying himself at last.

For those who like freddie and cricket this is a really good watch

https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m00190pg

There was talk of a second series

It says it's no longer available.

MeinKraft · 09/09/2023 21:26

I really don't agree with comments about Top Gear clutching for presenters and becoming ever more boorish. Matt and Freddie in particular seem like lovely gentle people and much more likeable than the previous 3.

How do you know what happened? It's not been made public what went wrong.

Twonewcats · 09/09/2023 23:07

There's so much stuff abojt the accident which keeps being repeated which is incorrect. Eg he WAS wearing a crash helmet, yet people keep saying he wasnt.

There is no confirmation what speed he was doing, as far as i can see. The initial reports said it was not high speed, and subsequent reports quote the car being "a 130mph car", which has then been misquoted as being the speed it was travelling at the time.

AdviceNeededForMe · 09/09/2023 23:42

Sounds like a terrible accident. I do hope Freddie hasnt lost his sense of humour in all this. Love watching him on tv, he makes me laugh with his banter. He has a lot of support for his recovery ♥️

PrincessHoneysuckle · 09/09/2023 12:14

There was no air bag apparently.I hope he sues whoever is to blame

The car flipped at speed, he wasn't wearing a helmet. An air bag would not have prevented these injuries unfortunately. I cannot imagine what he went through. Horrific. I hope he has the right support in place to deal with the PTSD and trauma.

He WAS wearing a helmet!

Whilst the pics are really shocking, what was amazing was how the cricket world responded to him being there. Absolutely every commentator on TMS and so many of the current squad said it was great to have him around, how much of a hero he has been to the current players, and how happy they were to see him back. He'd actually been around the squad for quite a while, but they kept it quiet until he was ready to go public.
He would have known that he'd be photographed and reported on, but the genuine love for him from everyone must really have given him such a boost after such a trauma. There's talk of him coming into the ECB in some kind of official position. I really hope he does, he's really one of the most genuine & inspiring men I know.
