Double vs king size bed

We have a double. It’s fine in winter but feels a bit close in summer. I think it is workable as DH is a shift worker which means there’s usually only 4 nights a week maximum where we are sharing a bed all night. We live in a new build and there wouldn’t be room for a bigger bed in our room, but equally I hope we’re not compromising on sleep quality - my friend recoiled in horror when I told her we haven’t got a king size as she has a super king and wouldn’t go back. If space was abundant we’d probably get a bigger bed but we live in a small two bed and it just is what it is unfortunately. Does anyone else find a double fine?

I have a super-king I think and it's lovely! I think a double is ok for one person but I'd rather have bunk beds than sleep next to anyone in a double now!!! 😁
But if you haven't got the space then you haven't got the space 🤷🏻‍♀️

If stuck with a double, surely DH would have to go Grin

😂

I bought smaller bedside units so we could fit a king bed in , unfortunately a superking would be too close to the radiator or we’d have bought one.
I love going on holiday when there are 2 singles, even better in the US where it’s two doubles 😍

I mean, if you can’t fit one in then you can’t fit one in. Once you have a baby then you will be having a disrupted sleep anyway for the next 8 years and counting! But a bigger bed is always better, if you can fit it at all.

As others say, your bed is the piece of furniture you spend most time using in your home and the most important for your health, so we have made it a priority.

I'd have a super king next to a super king if I could. Never too much room.

I'd say go as big as you can

I’d do the same if I had space - or even better, a bedroom of my own! 🤣

unsync · 24/06/2023 10:12

When peri kicks in with night sweats and overheating, you need the biggest bed possible or your own separate bed. I went from a super king to a double, but as the downsize included removal of (now ex) husband it was OK. The dog struggled a bit more though and fell out a couple of times. 😬

FrenesiGates · 24/06/2023 10:12

We have a fairly small bedroom and I got the smallest bedside tables we could to fit in a super king – there's not much room to walk around it but it's 100% worth it! If we know somewhere we are travelling will only have a double we tend to go for twin beds as a double is just too small for us (DP is very tall and neither of us are particularly still sleepers)

Mattresses are so expensive, aren’t they?! We have a hybrid one too and it’s a couple thousand, so it is a big cost to replace but worth the investment. We’ve not had a baby yet (hopefully will try soon) but just not sure how comfortable a double would be for sharing through pregnancy. And if we got a dog - also on our list of future things to do - I couldn’t possibly say no to them sleeping on the bed so like a PP says maybe would need a bigger one if dog was sharing too haha

I conceived when weighing 9st 2lb. My 7lb DD in the weirdest (and most uncomfortable) breech position possible gave me a circumference of roughly 48 inches at 37 weeks. A double bed is 54 inches across, you need to sleep on your side when heavily pregnant and her father was, in the best MN tradition, over six foot tall.

Get the largest bed you possibly can.

@soapysu honestly I've got a 5 week old and for the last 3 months of pregnancy we couldn't share. It was awful! We have a spaniel but he has his bed at the bottom of our bed ha x

Super king when I was married, king now I'm single, absolutely could not sleep in a double with another adult now!

OddBoots · 24/06/2023 20:09

If you don't have room for a bigger bed then would having separate (single) duvets help you space out a bit in summer?

DappledThings · 24/06/2023 20:12

We have a double and it's fine. Never felt too small and we're both overweight too. We do have a king size duvet though

greglet · 24/06/2023 20:24

DH and I are both tall and slim and we have a king sized bed with a double duvet each. We'd prefer a super king sized but it won't fit in the bedroom.

Our parents think we are terribly precious because when we come to stay, we sleep in separate bedrooms rather than have to share a double bed.

When I was heavily pregnant he slept in the spare room 😂

elm26 · 25/06/2023 00:16

@soapysu we didn't! Luckily we have a really comfy corner sofa which turns into a giant square so DH slept on it unless I wasn't tired (had random bursts of energy at 11pm for some reason sometimes) and then I'd stay up to watch tv and sleep on it instead.

I can't remember the last time we slept in bed together because we take it turns to be in living room with baby in Moses basket so we get equal amounts of sleep 😂

I think I'm going to have to give up a couple of years of holidays to justify buying a king when we move, I'll get a second hand frame and just pay out for the mattress.

Copperoliverbear · 29/06/2023 17:13

King or super king bigger the better

CrazyHamsterLady · 18/09/2023 11:12

Once you get a SuperKing you’ll never go back. I love ours so much!

KnittedCardi · 18/09/2023 11:15

DH and I have our own King size beds, in our own bedrooms. Bliss.

hdbs17 · 18/09/2023 11:22

We have a king size and recently had to share a double when on holiday, it was hell. DH ended up sleeping on the sofa by the third night because it was just too cramped.

Kingsize all the way. Once our baby is in his own room - I'm hoping to change to a super king!
