Double vs king size bed

We have a double. It’s fine in winter but feels a bit close in summer. I think it is workable as DH is a shift worker which means there’s usually only 4 nights a week maximum where we are sharing a bed all night. We live in a new build and there wouldn’t be room for a bigger bed in our room, but equally I hope we’re not compromising on sleep quality - my friend recoiled in horror when I told her we haven’t got a king size as she has a super king and wouldn’t go back. If space was abundant we’d probably get a bigger bed but we live in a small two bed and it just is what it is unfortunately. Does anyone else find a double fine?

I feel doubles are too small x

Copperoliverbear · 23/06/2023 23:43

You can't put a price on comfort and a good nights sleep.
My grandad always said " have an expensive bed and an expensive pair of shoes because if you are not in one you are in the other x

Mumontherunn · 23/06/2023 23:45

Always had a double because of small bedrooms in our flats. During my pregnancy managing with bump and a pregnancy pillow was a struggle but jusy ok… now baby is one we’re finally looking to get a King Size. Plus this heat is making us too irritable too! Do it now before you start baby making, in case you end up
heavily pregnant in summer!

I have a Super King and DH is in another room.

I still cling to the edge because of BastardSpaniel

Lol!! I completely empathise with this!!

Mummypete · 23/06/2023 23:46

We used to have a double and it was too small for us. DH is a twig and I am a size 8 so we’re not taking up loads of space either!
We have a super king and a king in the spare room. We have on occasion both slept in the spare room and the king feels so small in comparison to our bed. I’d agree with get the biggest bed you can fit. Our sleep has never been so good.

IveShaggedSomeMingers · 23/06/2023 23:47

I take very little space in the bed. Just lie down like a plank. A double is plenty, but it needs to be long enough for the other occupant or he tries to sleep diagonally.

Redhairblackheart · 23/06/2023 23:48

I want a super king. I looked at measurements and i think i recall a king only being 4inches bigger

That is some great wisdom

We had a double for over 10 yrs, with a king sized duvet to avoid drafts. It didn't feel too small until we went on holiday on King sized and super king beds. That was the push for us to size up to a king with a super king duvet. Feels like plenty of space now.

mrsmacmc · 23/06/2023 23:52

@Thatsshallot1967 absolutely!!! 😁 🐾

TokyoSushi · 23/06/2023 23:52

A double is perfect, until you've slept in a king, and then you can never go back because it's waaaaay too small!

Ambi · 23/06/2023 23:53

I guess it depends on how you both sleep, we're side sleepers and don't move much so are not banging into each other despite me not being slim. Active star shaped back sleepers could easily disturb each other.

Colinorpercy · 23/06/2023 23:59

We’ve only ever had a double and DH is 6,7! Our room would be really cramped with anything bigger but if space wasn’t an issue then would get a bigger one. just used to what we have so never really bothered us.

CC4712 · 24/06/2023 00:01

A double might be ok if you are both very short and petite, but not a preferential option now I'm older and no longer slim.

In a previous house, we had the king sized bed again a wall. It meant either crawling in from the foot end, or across DH's side. Luckily in a larger house now where I don't need to do this and can access the bed from both sides.

As someone else said, if you know nothing else, then you cope, but once you've had a larger bed- its difficult to go back.

NothingButShiteOnTV · 24/06/2023 06:20

My husband is 6'2 and I am 5'10. We are both weighty! Not a hope in hell of going back to a double. We wouldn't fit the two dogs and two cats in either so it's clearly not an option 😂
Both of my teenagers have a double bed, they look about right for a single adult sized person to me, the kids have plenty of space in them but when my daughter has a friend over to sleep and they share it looks cramped.

Sunnysunbun · 24/06/2023 06:20

I love my superking.

JaninaDuszejko · 24/06/2023 06:25

We have been married over 20 years and have always had a double bed despite living in houses with big bedrooms where we could fit a larger bed. It's absolutely fine. When we stay in hotels with big beds it feels very strange having DH so far away.

If you only have a small bedroom and you are OK with your double don't waste money getting a bigger bed just because your friend was rude about your perfectly normal sleeping arrangements.

MumUndone · 24/06/2023 06:31

Double is fine for us.

SophieJo · 24/06/2023 06:37

Could never sleep in a double again. Whenever I book a holiday let I always look to see what size the bed is.
Could you not fit a king size in without bedside tables or other things?

Annoyingsongs · 24/06/2023 06:38

Super king-size, with a memory foam mattress topper. It'll change your life

BelindaBears · 24/06/2023 06:47

Way too small for DH and I but he’s 6’5” and I’m fat, so we need a lot of space. King size all the way. But if your current set up works for you both then what anyone else thinks doesn’t matter.

PuttingDownRoots · 24/06/2023 06:55

We have a Super king at home. Was very useful when kids were young!

At DHs work he has a queen (between a single and a double) and we sometimes mabage a few hours before one moves to the inflatable mattress on the floor (I sometimes need to attend his work events with him, or I take the kids for a few days in the holidays as its near a lovely beach)

SerotinaPickeler · 24/06/2023 06:56

We've downsized recently so we now have a king bed; had super-king previously. Super-king much better if 2 sharing and one of you is a 'spreader'. A king sized is only just OK IMV.

Cotswoldmama · 24/06/2023 06:56

I have a super king and it was great whilst co sleeping as sometimes there were 2 kids in our bed but now I do feel it's a bit too big. We have a big bedroom but I thing it would look better with a smaller bed. If we were to get a new bed now I'd get a double instead.

This made me chuckle!!
I feel like a giant in a double bed, it's my width rather than my height that is the problem 🤦‍♀️ I imagine they are fine if you are 5'2 and a size 8, sadly I am not.
When the kids are older and no longer costing me a small fortune I fully intend to treat myself (and husband 😉) to a super king with a memory foam mattress, I might even get some fancy high thread count bedding to go on it....can't wait!
