Double vs king size bed

soapysu · 23/06/2023 22:55

We have a double. It’s fine in winter but feels a bit close in summer. I think it is workable as DH is a shift worker which means there’s usually only 4 nights a week maximum where we are sharing a bed all night. We live in a new build and there wouldn’t be room for a bigger bed in our room, but equally I hope we’re not compromising on sleep quality - my friend recoiled in horror when I told her we haven’t got a king size as she has a super king and wouldn’t go back. If space was abundant we’d probably get a bigger bed but we live in a small two bed and it just is what it is unfortunately. Does anyone else find a double fine?

We have a king but don't find it much different to the double but we both sleep in our caravan double bed ok and that is probably not as big as a normal double so if you sleep ok now you probably won't find it much different.

Some people must have huge bedrooms, ours is about 4m x 4.5 which is probably about average for a main bedroom and I don't think a bigger bed than a kingsize would fit comfortably.

Summergrassstains · 24/06/2023 07:13

We have a superking but if you can do away with some furniture depending on room layout you could have one of those ottoman beds with storage underneath in the divan. That way you don't need space for the drawers to pull out. Both my children have singles with under bed storage, great for summer/winter duvets etc and easy access. It could easily replace a chest of drawers.

I live in a large end terraced oop North! I can't do meters but the main bedroom is about 17' x 12' and we have fitted wardrobes so all of that is floor space.
The smallest bedroom is about 8' x 8' so easily accommodates a double and fitted wardrobe/desk.
It's not all good though, it's bloody freezing in winter 🤣

mondaytosunday · 24/06/2023 07:24

Well not much you can do about it so ....
Back in the day I guess most couples had doubles and survived. My husband didn't like the idea of a super king as he said 'I won't be able to find you', which was sweet, though I'm almost 6' so a bit 🙄. Anyway a king was a necessity, partly as he was a combustion engine giving off so much heat at night and I like to be cool. I still have one (widow) which I know share with two dogs.

I have a Super King and DH is in another room.

I still cling to the edge because of BastardSpaniel

I’m the same ! DDog is stretched out horizontally while I cling to the edge 🤣🤣🤣

We have superking but we are lucky to have a massive bedroom. Zip-link mattress too: it’s great, snoring thrashing DP feels miles away and doesn’t bounce me around. But even when we were in the world’s tiniest flat we had a king: I put a rail across the chimney breast alcoves instead of having wardrobes, got a tallboy not a chest of drawers, no bedside tables, and when we had the baby had to rehang the door to swing outwards to fit a bedside crib. Totally worth it for the space, can’t bear someone sleeping right on top of me. But then DP is tall, broad and sleeps like a wild hog caught in a fishing net.

NothingButShiteOnTV · 24/06/2023 07:32

Why exactly do dogs take up more space than a well built 6'2 human man 🤔 our thirteen week old spaniel puppy had me hanging over the edge of our King sized bed this morning....his three year old sister helped him shove me out of the way I'm sure!
I forgive them because they are cute!

Ours is 3.6 x 4.5 and and super king fits comfortably! We still have bedside tables, 2 x wardrobes, chest of drawers, dressing table and corner chair, and plenty of walking space around the bed (honestly!) there's not any spare wall space as you can imagine but honestly doesn't feel cramped, all our furniture is accessed easily.

We have always had a double and it was fine - now have a king-size and it is a better. Biggest game changer for my quality of sleep was separate duvets - both have our own single duvets and it is much more comfortable.

yipeeyiyay · 24/06/2023 09:20

Doubles really feel like they are for one person. Even my dc all have kings. Dh and I have an emperor although I'm sure a SK would be fine.

Super king-size, with a memory foam mattress topper. It'll change your life

Too sweaty!

greyhairnomore · 24/06/2023 09:26

I've got a double to myself. Super king for both of us.
Couldn't sleep in a double with anyone.

SatelliteStomper · 24/06/2023 09:28

Superking with separate duvets here. Can't go back now. When we stay at MILs we have to sleep in a double, and I always end up in the spare room instead.

Level75 · 24/06/2023 09:30

Superking here, but when I want a decent night's sleep I go to the spare room where we have a king. I struggle in holiday cottages which only have doubles, and we're both pretty slim.

Bearpawk · 24/06/2023 09:30

King here, DH's feet stick out the bottom of a double ! Plus I'm not super slim.

pilates · 24/06/2023 09:31

You seem to be coping ok. If you haven’t got the room you have no choice. We have a king and would love a super king but do not have the room.

TheCraicDealer · 24/06/2023 09:31

Before we got our house we would share DH’s small double in his barracks every weekend for about six years- getting a standard double felt like an upgrade! Our first house’s main bedroom wasn’t massive and had an awkward layout, a king would have been a real squeeze. We’ve since moved again and have got a king. It’s nicer but on the occasions we’ve shared doubles it’s been fine.

pilates · 24/06/2023 09:35

I always thought a super king was bigger than a king but apparently not?

FrenchFancie · 24/06/2023 09:39

We’ve always had a double until a week ago - we used to live abroad where is was very hot (and no a/c!) and the double was dire, so sticky! We bought our new house partly because the main bedroom was big enough for a king size without making things cramped! It’s like heaven now….

and I’m sleeping miles better!

jannier · 24/06/2023 09:41

If you don't have space why does it matter? But no a king or bigger if I have the choice.

cocksstrideintheevening · 24/06/2023 09:43

I couldn't sleep in a double with DH. We have separate rooms at home and when we travel book twin beds.

I don't really understand the concept of sharing beds!

jfshu · 24/06/2023 09:45

It's wider, about 20cm wider than a king I think, but same length (the 20cm makes a surprising amount of difference!)

coffeecupsandwaxmelts · 24/06/2023 09:50

We have a super-king and it makes so much difference. Would never share another double again!

It probably the shape of our bedroom, the door is on the same wall that the bed head has to go, we also have a chimney breast on opposite side where wardrobes go in the gaps and a bay window which makes the space on the bed head wall less, we can just fit a king bed, a bedside cabinet and small bedside table on that wall
