Are all washing machines liars?

Or have I just been unfortunate?

Up to this point I think I've been a gullable fool and just thought it was me misjudging.

But I've caught this one out. I timed it. Now I know for sure that it regularly* pretends there's one minute left when it's actually over two minutes.

  • I say regularly, I'm suspicious it's always but I've not timed other programmes, so I'm giving the benefit of the doubt.

yes mines a liar too. mine gets down to 4 minutes remaining then decides its the end every single time. and I've also noticed some minutes last way longer than 1 minute. mines a Candy by the way are other candy's liars too??

Bakingwithmyboys · 16/05/2023 21:43

Mine does this. Not only with the 1 minute left mark but the door lock light stays on after the timer has finished.

It's also meant to "weigh" the load and adjust the time it will take. But time adjusts at some random point in the cycle so you never really know how long the cycle will take.

gabsdot45 · 16/05/2023 21:43

My old washing machine used to say one minute left for about 15 minutes and then it would go back to 20 minutes remaining.
Total liar.
My new one is more honest thank goodness.
The dishwasher it completely honest.

Kittensat36 · 16/05/2023 21:47

Glad it's not just me! Mine stretches a minute further than a Time Lord.

anotheropinion · 16/05/2023 21:48

If there's sensors involved, the time is an estimate rather than a precise schedule.

I.e. when it's adding water it may take longer if your mains has lower pressure, in order to sense the same amount of water added.

And when draining, it tries to detect if there's still water dribbling out. If there is then it'll keep running the pump to suck it out, and extend the cycle until it stops detecting more water in the sump. How long it actually takes will depend on how much the clothes have clumped up and knotted themselves together.

So yeah, it's lying coz it doesn't know, but people like to see the countdown, so it makes one up. 😁

rainraingoawaay · 16/05/2023 21:48

Mines not even pretending - did 5 minutes before saying "0" the whole time!!

nicericey · 16/05/2023 21:49

Mine did the opposite the other day it suddenly went from 30 minutes to 10!

jay55 · 16/05/2023 21:49

They are rivals to the 2 mins bus countdown.
Deffo a different reality.

Abracadabra12345 · 16/05/2023 21:49

Oh I caught it in the very act of its lies. It said 2 minutes left to spin and as I watched it began to beep like a crazy thing while it's display panel said "End"

ladygindiva · 16/05/2023 21:53

Yup mines a liar too; it'll say it has 8 minutes left for ten bloody minutes. He's also very spiteful; when the cycle has finished the door lock will NOT click off while I'm stood waiting. Yet as soon as I cross the room to do something else - " click". Petty fucker.

DinosaurOfFire · 16/05/2023 21:55

Mine also lies, as does my tumble drier. The tumble drier frequently says '10' minutes left, then takes 40 minutes- usually when I'm drying towels or jeans so they're heavy and hold lots of water. The washing machine likes to skip from 7 to 4 or from 5 to 0 or for the last minute to actually take 4 while I'm standing there waiting to empty the load into the tumble dryer. Zanussi, if that makes a difference.

MuffinToSeeHere · 16/05/2023 21:56

I had the exact conversation with my husband the other day. Ours lies and isn't even trying to pretend it isn't. The other day I cooked dinner, unloaded and reloaded the dishwasher and ate my meal in the 10 minutes it had remaining. Now I'm not disputing I can be efficient but I'm not super women.

AnImaginaryCat · 16/05/2023 21:56

I'm sorry to hear that there are others being lied to also. Though in some ways I'm not - it brings a great feeling of solidarity.

I'm also not sure which way I feel about those of you, whose washing machines don't even try to cover up their lies. In some ways it might be easier, as it's so upfront, but then in other ways it's so blatant it's really reveals how little they care.

Mine too, sometime the lies are extreme. One moment it's 11 mins, I look again and its 35.
Yes yes I know you're not supposed to stuff it full of clothes.

Boomboom22 · 16/05/2023 22:00

My dishwasher is too cheap for a display but pretty sure it runs to perfect time every time too.

Mine also does this. It senses my need for a hasty door opening and refuses to help me.

Idratherbepaddleboarding · 16/05/2023 22:03

Mine definitely lies to me!

lifehappens12 · 16/05/2023 22:04

10 Minutes ago my machine said it had 8 mins left and still spinning.

I really want to go bed!

TokyoSushi · 16/05/2023 22:06

Oh yes, we also have the eternal minute!

BillyNighysWife · 16/05/2023 22:10

This is a widespread issue and I am calling it out for what this really is. Gaslighting.

Tacocatgoatcheesepizza · 16/05/2023 22:14

I timed the quick 15 minute cycle on my old machine once - 28 minutes 😡

EddieHoweisMYmanager · 16/05/2023 22:15

I concluded a while back that washing machine minutes are the same as Apple update minutes. I’m not sure what either device gets out of lying to me but it never fails to infuriate me.

cocksstrideintheevening · 16/05/2023 22:35

I d just got a new Hoover machine and it is a fucking liver. I timed it today as I needed to go back to my desk for a meeting. It was on 1min for 5 before it finished.

This definitely wins. Did it morph into a liver after you for it? How does it work? So many questions 😁
